I am jumping the gun a bit with the title, and will walk it back later and apologize if it turns out not to be true, but FWIW:

Héctor Gómez‏ @hgomez27

BREAKING NEWS: According to off the record sources and non-official reports, dominican All-Star Robinson Cano will be suspended for Steroid Use, could be announced today.

That would be interesting and pretty unsurprising. There's nothing about this yet when you google it however.

Yep, this Twitter report is the only thing so far, and it is probably complicated by him breaking his hand and being out for a while anyway.

I like how he capitalized all-star but not Dominican.

This would make me laugh more than anything in the world.

Three years ago when I was at a Mariners-Yankees game, this drunk fellow was chanting steroids when ARod was up. I asked him if he would do the same for Nelson Cruz and he asked me why? Dumbass Mariners fans.

Maybe this explains the timing, since after his injury he probably dropped all appeals so it could start ASAP:

"Players who test positive for either their first or second tests are given the option to appeal, in which scientific tests will be conducted to prove validity of test. Within that period of time, they are restricted from participation in all baseball activity. If an appeal is granted, the suspension may be reduced by 40 games for the first offense or 80 games for the second offense. There is no appeal for a third offense. All suspensions are without pay. In addition, a suspended player can be replaced on the active roster by another player. If a player is on the disabled list, the suspension is served while on the disabled list. Unless a suspension is reduced on appeal, a suspended player is not allowed to participate in that year's post-season even if his suspension ends before then.
Players who receive a lifetime ban after a third positive test may apply for reinstatement after one year and be eligible to be reinstated after two years."

I saw some talk about him going into the Hall of Fame recently. Guessing this ends that question.

Also, how does this end up making his deal look? Humongous contract and never sniffed the postseason, and now suspended 80 games for steroids.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh. Have to assume this isn't new and he was using for a long time. Probably torches his chances at the hall.

Why Robbie?

Gotta love a Dominican radio station getting the scoop. Must've been via someone connected to Cano.

Eh, it ain't his fault they didn't make the playoffs. And Cashman basically chose to pay Ellsbury instead of Cano, which hasn't exactly worked out despite one playoff appearance.

Man, this sucks. I was against signing him to a long contract extension, but I still enjoyed rooting for him.

He got busted for lasix? It's a diuretic, as a nurse they always told us to inject it slowly if IV or it can damage your hearing. I can't see what kind of advantage this would give you in baseball, but I would love to hear from the MD's on the board.

Us of a diuretic is not an automatic suspension...they needed some other kind of proof according to TJ Quinn [note correction, not Ken Rosenthal]

Yeah, the substance abuse policy says:

The presence of a Diuretic or Masking Agent in a Player’s urine specimen shall be treated as a positive test result if the IPA determines that the Player intended to avoid detection of his use of another Prohibited Substance.
So the independent examiner obviously found some additional evidence, although I have no idea what the standard of proof is or anything like that. On the one hand you'd think if he dropped his appeal that suggests there was something else going on because presumably if he used Furosemide for a totally legitimate purpose he would want to fight to the end, but on the other hand the whole Deflategate saga makes pretty clear that you can be in the right and still decide it's not worth it to fight to the end due to standards of review, deference to the fact-finder and stuff like that.

And since he was going to be out two months anyway with a broken hand, maybe better to just take the suspension now and come back in August.

Injury or not, $11 million is an awful lot to walk away from if there was any chance that he could overturn it on appeal.

Betting on a horse who takes Lasix (furosemide) for the first time is a known wagering angle. That is all I got.

The story we allways hear is that players are hounded not to go to doctors not approved by the teams. Saying "I went to a doctor in the DR for medical treatment.." really is more of a red flag.

Pretty sure that's not how it works. He's on the DL, he stays on the DL until he's ready to be activated, then the suspension begins. Same thing that happened with Steven Wright. Cano's probably done for the year now.

We can all make jokes about this and there are a ton of them. However, this is always a bad look on The Game. It still boggles my mind that anyone at that level making that kind of money puts themselves in a position to lose so much.

It's not like he's a Minor League guy struggling to make it. He's got more money than he can ever spend and a reputation as one of the great players and team mates.

Fuck him. Zero sympathy. Enjoy the albatross around your neck Robby.
