I hope for your sake they fixed the signal issue that plagues the Bionic and I believe also the RAZR.

I hope the headphone jack issue from the Bionic does not end up being significant for the RAZR or Maxx:

Comment 17 by amitaul...@gmail.com, Today (4 minutes ago)
Experiencing this issue on my new Droid Razr Maxx. Every time 1) my headphones (regular,
non-headset headphones) are connected, 2) I'm listening to music (default Music app or PowerAmp),
and 3) I'm walking with the phone in my pocket, the phone launches the 'Voice Command' app and gets
halfway through saying 'Please say a command' (at full volume, mind you) before it redials my last
call. On my way to work this morning it called my sister no less than 12 times.

It's astonishing that Google would allow such a widespread problem could to persist for years without
resolution. This is my first non-iPhone smartphone, and as much as I want to love it, it is incredibly
hard to while this problem exists. It's one thing to be an annoyance to me, but to annoy my friends and
family by constantly calling them every time I listen to music?? Unacceptable.

FIX this ASAP, or I will be left with no choice but to return to the iPhone.

Info:
Droid Razr (Maxx)
System v: 6.11.748.XT912.Verizon.en.US
Android v: 2.3.5
Build: 6.5.1-73_DHD-11_M1-2
from http://code.google.c...detail?id=20690

It has now arisen on my replacement Bionic and I am going to push for a different phone (Sorry, PSF, looks like i might not be buying you Bionic accessories.)

FWIW, I've been listening to music on my walk to the bus stop every morning since I got the Maxx and that's never happened. I don't even get how that would happen. Isn't he/she shutting the screen off?

One big thing to remember with the Galaxy Nexus vs the Razr Maxx is that in a year from now when you have 10 months or so left until an upgrade, the GN will have a boatloads of fresh roms with new features for you to flash and play with. It's not a phone that's ever going to be stale thanks to it being the darling of the developer community. Since the Maxx has a locked bootloader, you're pretty much locked into whatever official updates you get. When the next version of Android comes out (Jellybean?) it's pretty likely that the GN will get it both officially and unofficially way before the Maxx does.

Of course the battery life is huge and I have no idea what phone I would have gotten if I had to choose between them. I will say that the GN has the best display that I've ever seen. I definitely rate it higher than the iPhone 4 and 4s as I've lined it up next to both of them multiple times.

It does not matter--it's triggered by jostling or diconnection of the jack connection for the headset/earbuds. Many times, if you pull the headphone jack out while a song/podcast is playing, the audio pauses--which seems like a good idea. Other times, instead, that intereference or disconnection launches the voice command and dials the phone--it must override the screen lock somehow. It's a PITA. Especially, if it repeatedly calls someone at 5:30 a.m.

I finally pulled the trigger yesterday and replaced my BlackBerry with a Galaxy Nexus. Right away I started experiencing the "One Way Call Quality Issue" aka "Galaxy Nexus mutes mid-call" as described in this thread and others. At any point during a phone conversation, the party at the other end is suddenly unable to hear me. The condition typically persists for 5-20 seconds, and then outgoing audio is restored. It can occur at any time during the call. Longest problem-free stretch during a call was about 20 minutes. I can hear everything fine on my end at all times.

I love everything else about this device, but the random outgoing audio dropouts are unacceptable. Has anyone else here run into this problem? Anyone have any insights? Verizon seems to know about it, and there's talk of a "mid-February" target date for a software fix, but from what I've read in those threads, that forecast is optimistic. There's no evidence that Samsung/Google/Verizon has even figured out yet what's causing the problem.

I have just under two weeks to decide if I'm going to keep this thing. If I return it, they'd better waive the $35 retocking fee.

The first guy in that comment string is right. You should be able to simply disable voice command entirely.

The jack definitely overrides the screen lock. I have a similar problem which is not nearly as much of a PITA with my X. If I jostle, the app I am running to listen to music stops, and then when it detects the connection it will start up the default player. Since I am usually using Spotify this is annoying as fuckall. However, at least with the music you can turn off the option to autostart with the headphone jack so now when it happens at least I just get silence. My friend's old iphone had this problem as well, but if you are just using itunes it is less of a nuisance.

It is also not much better with BT, if anything interrupts the BT signal it will cycle this way.

All of the automation is awesome when it works, but if Android really wants to distinguish itself they really need to let the user control this shit, which is why I fucking hate MotoBlur. I shouldn't have to root to do things like use a non-standard music player or get rid of unwanted bloatware, etc. I just wish the Nexus didn't feel so cheap. Just give the plastic a coating. I don't know why I can't get past it, but I can't. Moto still makes the phones that I like the best in terms of feel and form factor.

I wonder if turning off voice command would work, because I've had my phone set to PIN screen lock and BT bypass set to off but it has still happened. I'll see if BT helps, as Verizon is sending me a BT stereo head set while they try to sort this out with Moto.

Maybe try installing a different lockscreen (Widget Locker, GO Locker, etc) that doesn't allow it to be bypassed?

I came reeeeaally close to pulling the trigger on the Maxx yesterday, but reconsidered when I realized I'll rarely use my phone over the next two months. Is there anything else coming down the pipeline in the next few months, or is the consensus that the Maxx will still be my choice in April?

Might as well wait, as, at the very least, the price will drop.

From what I've read there is a mobile conference on February 26th that will unveil some new stuff. May want to wait until then.

any Sprint users have a Droid that they like? I'm making the switch from Blackberry this month...had planned on going to iphone but heard (and read) so many good things about Droids that I think I'm going in that direction. Sprint doesn't have the Maxx or Galaxy Nexus though, and I refuse to switch to Verizon, nor do I want to keep using my POS Blackberry until an undetermined time when Sprint finally rolls out the Nexus.

How much are the original EVO 4Gs going for these days? Maybe pick one up on the cheap to hold you over until the Nexus drops on Sprint?

The Nexus on Sprint is supposed to be out 1st half of this year. You have to figure all those original EVO buyers' two-year contracts will be up in the first week of June (and upgradeable in April) - so it won't be that long for the Nexus. Of course their roll out of LTE will be another matter, so you may have the phone but without LTE operability in your area.

Not sure what to make this?

http://www.droid-life.com/2012/02/03/google-no-longer-considers-verizons-lte-galaxy-nexus-to-be-a-developer-phone/

Wow, so I’m not really sure where to start with this head-scratch-worthy news. Thanks to a reader, we have now realized that the LTE/CDMA version of the Galaxy Nexus that thousands of you purchased, may no longer be considered a “supported” developer device by Google. You will notice in the screenshot above that the device “toro” – which was the codename for the device – has been removed from the list of supported devices. There is also a note above that which reads “No CDMA devices are supported.” Not sure it could be any clearer than that.

I think this is more about the CDMA thing than any specific phone. Seems like a little shot at VZW.

The Epic 4G Touch (Samsung Galaxy SII) is awesome. Great battery life, beautiful display, quality camera. I can't think of anything I don't like on this device. Hell, I'm using the 4G hotspot now to run my PS3 and write this post while also playing on my iPad.

$100 on Cowboom, $5 and $6 coupons for new users floating around out there, dozens to choose from, 30 return policy (let them try proving that the phone didn't randomly reboot when you had it):

I got an Evo 4G from Best Buy today with my upgrade for $79. My son dropped my phone last night and the screan smashed. Best Buy has a better protection plan then Spront, that is $2 more per month but it has unlimited replacements and no deductable. I looked at all of the other phones including the Iphone 4s and in the end it wasn't close. The iphone has tons of glitches but the huge difference is that you can't remove the battery like you can on the Evo. I have 3 batterys and change them out all the time.

If being able to pop in a new battery at any time you want, then yes, you made the right choice.

But if you were also factoring operating system stability/glitches then iOS wins by a landslide IMO.

After 5 days with the Galaxy Nexus, I exchanged it yesterday for the Razr Maxx. It was not an easy decision, since I loved everything about the Nexus -- except for the fact that it was useless for voice communications due to the mic-muting problem I described in this post. With no fix in sight (early reports indicate that ICS 4.0.4 has not solved the problem), I had no choice but to bail. So far 1455 respondents (27%) to this poll have reported experiencing the problem to one degree or another. For me, the outgoing audio was intermittently dropping out on every single call.

The Razr Maxx is a decent device, but it seems pretty sluggish after the Nexus, and the display isn't as nice. The OS, Gingerbread somethingorother, is a real dog compared to ICS, to which the Razr will be upgraded at some time in the coming months. What I like most about this phone, though, is that I can actually use it to call up people and talk to them.

Hmmmm this could be interesting.

Looks promising but I just installed it on my Nook and my Atrix and it basically doesn't work at all. Web pages never render, none of the buttons or menus do anything. It seems much closer to an Alpha than a Beta to me.

Logged into the Market, and neither my Nook nor my Galaxy S II Skyrocket showed as available devices for installation. I'm guessing it's a limited number of hardware platforms that are being supported right now.

That said, a stable, working version of Chrome for my phone would kick ass.

Hmmm works pretty damn well on my GN. Well enough that I just got rid of Dolphin and will use this as my stock browser. Best mobile version of tabbed browsing that I've seen yet.

Not a lot of love for the MAXX display from the Verge:

Unfortunately, the other thing you’re still looking at is the RAZR’s miserable 4.3-inch PenTile qHD display. [...] Text looks jaggy, whites shift to blue when viewed off-axis, and the whole thing generally feels like the concession to thinness that it is. I’m not a huge fan of the 720p Super AMOLED PenTile display on the Galaxy Nexus either, but it’s head and shoulders above the RAZR and RAZR Maxx. Motorola would have been far better off using the extra thickness of the Maxx to accommodate a better display — yes, the Maxx’s battery will run all day, but you’re not going to want to look at the screen for nearly that long.

That's just nonsense. I'll take a halfway decent display that last all day vs a great one that doesn't. I'm sure that comes down to personal preference, but the battery was why I bought this phone. We're not dealing with a dot matrix display here. The screen is fine.

I'm not going to deny that the display, while vibrant compared to the washed-out Droid X, is one of the weaker parts of the phone. I can live with it, but it's kinda jaggy and stuff, but not a showstopper for me.

****

In other news, I've got my phone set to vibrate all the time, but I notice that my phone will never vibrate when I've been sent an email. What could be the issue here? I'm stock, not rooted, with GoLauncher Ex as the app drawer replacement.

The screen is fine and there are so many other ways to use the battery besides the screen. Imagine having background updates of apps that you use all the time ...

Hmm, have you tried downloading Light Flow? It allows you to control the Vibrate and LED Light notifications for all your apps. It's pretty intuitive, but here are some directions.

i think that's a setting you have to change within the app. It took me a while to figure out how to get different notifications for different actins, partly because the notifications for gmail were about 5 levels deep within their menus.

Problem solved!

Download Sound Manager v2, and click Menu, and Vibrate settings. Even though I'd had my settings set to "always vibrate," Sound Manager v2 revealed it was set to "never vibrate." I changed it to "vibrate whenever possible," sent myself an email, and BOOM, vibratey goodness.

(Light Flow did absolutely NOTHING for me. Nifty and useful, but it didn't do the trick for me at all. Sound Manager did.)

Yeah, I saw this after I posted. From what I've read, the Skyrocket won't be getting ICS until Q2 of this year.

But in the meantime, I'm pretty happy with this phone with Gingerbread.

Yeah, the Razr display is pretty crappy. The text is incredibly jaggy when zoomed out on a webpage, white has a yellowish hue to it when the display isn't pumped up to the max. Comparing it to my iPhone 4S is like night and day.

It's kinda surprising that after almost 2 years on the market, the iPhone 4 display is still the best around, IMO.

But like others have stated, this battery life on this device is undeniable. I went down to Greenville, SC today (which is about a 70 minute drive) and had the phone hooked up via bluetooth to stream music and podcasts, GPS on, using Google Navigation to find a few locations, and regularly checking Twitter and Facebook while I was out and about, and placed a couple short phones calls. I've been home for a while now, using it to view web pages, text and twitter and I still have 42% battery left. It's amazing.

Any other Android device and you'd be lucky to have 42% on your SECOND battery if you were using it that much.

Not to get into a pissing match, but side by side I think the Galaxy Nexus bests the iPhone when it comes to the display. It just seems to render colors better.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. I personally still hold the iPhone as the gold standard as far as screens go... If you look closely enough, I can still see the pentile matrix on the GNex. Where as the iPhone looks like the closest thing to print on a LCD display that I've seen before. I'm sure the fact that the screen is much smaller than the ones it's being compared to is a bonus for the iPhone though, allowing for higher pixel density.

Edit: I will say, the HTC Rezound is an incredibly close second in terms of display. If I could marry that display with the rest of the Droid Razr Maxx... Heaven.

Right. I chose the Droid RAZR MAXX over the Galaxy Nexus because of the battery, the familiarity of the Motorola user experience, the USB HD connection, the volume (not that I'm hard of hearing or anything), and the superior signal and telephony experience.

Given all of that, I can live with a less than stellar display, and for me, that was the only, THE ONLY area in which the Nexus is better than the Droid RAZR MAXX.

Oh, and ICS over Gingerbread. But again, Gingerbread is part of the familiarity of the UX. I don't regret my decision to head back to Moto-land for one second.

What I don't understand is how these reviewers don't see the battery life as an enormous selling point. At this point I don't care about being on the latest version of Android. It doesn't seem like anyone but the Nexus lines will ever be on the cutting edge, and until it starts to adversely effect my app selection, it becomes a moot point. It kinda sucks, but that's the state of Android at the moment.

I will also mention that the call quality of the Razr is leaps and bounds over the iPhone. Everything sounds crystal clear, whereas on my iPhone things sound muffled together.

Never mind the reviewers, why aren't we seeing Motorola and Verizon pimp the hell out of this phone? I wouldn't know it existed if I wasn't looking at Android blogs. I think the entire Razr release was botched when they didn't make the Maxx the standard and then push the hell out of it. The battery life is almost revolutionary at this point and nobody seems to know about it.

They should be flooding the airwaves with commercials that show how this battery compares to the iPhone 4S.

Taking this a step further, when ICS does come to the Maxx, is there any doubt that it'll be the best phone on the market?

Never mind the reviewers, why aren't we seeing Motorola and Verizon pimp the hell out of this phone? I wouldn't know it existed if I wasn't looking at Android blogs.
I said exactly this upthread. The Maxx was pimped quite a bit during the Super Bowl, but even then, the line between the Razr and Razr Maxx still seemed blurred. Verizon/Moto should have been screaming loud and clear, THIS PHONE HAS THE BEST BATTERY EVER.

Instead, there's literally one longwinded commercial making the rounds. This is such an unbelievable selling point and differentiator. Someone's asleep at the wheel.

Uhh, no it won't be, and there will be multiple new phones that beat it soundly, just as it has been with every "awesomest phone ever" that has come out.
