One thing I love about iOS 11 is that the Wifi widget in the control center doesn't completely disable wifi. 99.9% of the time I shut off wifi it's to lose a weak connection, or connect to a site that is blocked by the network I'm connected to, and inevitably I completely forget that I've had wifi off for hours, when I only needed it disconnected at a specific time and place.

I still wish there was an option in wifi settings to allow connecting to disable when you're walking (so I stop getting connected to weak xfinity wifi signals that basically jam my signal), or by altitude (might be a rare issue, but for me I have two wifi networks in my building, I live on the third floor, but always get stuck on the first floor network which is both weak and doesn't not connect to any devices I operate via my phone). For the first issue, I know that Apple's designers mostly drive to work, so they have designed the phone for themselves, so this isn't really something they'll encounter or will address, but for people in the city with the proliferation of wifi networks of scale, it kind of sucks.
Under Wi-Fi settings, click on the circled i icon and you can individually turn off auto-join for each network.

I ordered my iPhone X around 10am on the first day and got a delivery window of Dec 11-18. Just checked and it's been updated to Nov 16-24. So that's nice.

Thanks, that kind of gets me halfway there, though there are times I do want to be on the network when I'm stationary. I have unlimited data, so it's not the biggest deal, but wherever I can protect against getting throttled I will default to wifi.

That's what she said.
I have been using the iPhone X since yesterday, and man, it is fantastic.

I have already gotten used to not having a home button, which I thought would be the toughest part. The phone is very solid and makes my old iPhone 7 feel like a $50 ZTE P.O.S. burner smart phone.

The 3D Touch is much better and I will actually use it now, we will all have to, but I never used it before.

That screen!

This is a demo, so I haven't set up the Face ID, so I can't comment on that. But the animojis work well with mirroring my face. My personal one should be delivered tomorrow, I had buyers remorse at first, but that has faded into being very happy with it so far, and I haven't even gotten to personalize it yet.

My daughter dropped her 6s yesterday and smashed the screen. I was tempted for a second to use it as an excuse to give her my 8 plus so I could buy a X, but I came to my senses and decided to hold off. I figure giving developers a year to figure out how to deal with the X screen configuration and I’ll be ready to jump in. For now, I love the 8 plus (except for the wireless charging, which is terrible).

Got the X (moving from a 7+). Quick thoughts:
  • The decrease in screen size (width) is noticeable when typing. I had gotten very used to the increased keyboard width on the 7+, but now have a lot of typos due to the keys being closer together.
  • The lack of a home button isn't an issue at all. The swipe up motion is super natural.
  • Accessing control center on the other hand is a bit annoying; I used to go there all the time to turn WiFi on and off, pair bluetooth, and access the Apple TV remote. It's now a lot less seamless. I kind of wish that if I'm on the home screen, I would swipe up to access the control center still (even though I appreciate this would be inelegant).
  • The screen is gorgeous, etc...
  • FaceID works great. Neatest part so far is getting text messages and emails that only open their previews when the phone notices I'm looking at the screen.
Overall, I'm happy with it, but if next year brings an XI+ or whatever they call it, then I will be going back to the ridiculous sized phone.

Got the X delivered today. FaceID works great, no issue. I loved the quick transfer of my old phone to new just by putting it close. I was moving from the 7 plus so definitely smaller. Have not gone through a lot of features but I will say the speaker is light years better, now I can actually clearly hear YouTube videos.

I just downloaded ios11 onto my older iPad. It is absolutely annihilating the battery. Anyone have any idea why that might be? Nothing stands out in the battery settings for apps running more than they should and I've done all the normal battery saving tricks including background refresh, location services, restart, etc.

My thoughts exactly. Got it yesterday. I do miss that setting where the apps are zoomed and look a bit bigger, but not a big deal. Battery % is only viewable when you scroll down, but I only need to check it when its getting low, so not big deal. Speakers are awesome, and loving the faceID.

Seems a bit smaller than expected, but my hand isn't large, so I'm liking that I can one hand it without feeling I might drop it. But the keyboard is noticeably tighter. It's an adjustment. But I've been begging for an iphone without the black bars top and bottom, so this is what I've wanted size wise. It just feels a bit odd after having the +.

I had posted a link to a Forbes article up thread. It cited indexing as running in the background for the first couple of days or so as a huge battery drain that will go away. I had rapid battery draining on my 7 when I upgraded to IOS11 and that went away after the first few days. Seems likely that the same issue would apply for the iPad and will hopefully also go away quickly.

I just updated to iOS 11 on my iPhone 7 on Monday, with minor battery issues. I noticed that while I was using my phone that night, it did drain the battery fairly quick, but no issues since.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Helping to set a lower price point for iPhone 7. Walmart.com has new unlocked 128gb 7 going in and out of stock for $499-520.

I think I just finished Christmas shopping for my 16 y/o. (except now, he has to make sure THREE things are charged: iPhone, battery pack, AND now bt earbuds.)

For those talking about iOS 11/battery life, I've had the same problem. A friend suggested to do the update and turn off App refresh in the background. I just did it now, so I don't know yet how well this will work.

Love the X ... best feature ..screen sharpness and size of screen. Not a huge fan of the facial technology...bit gimmicky, works 95% of the time...the other 5% are a bit of a pain.

Updated delivery: Nov. 24, the day after Thanksgiving when I likely won't be home to sign for it.
Just got the same updated delivery date, but I'll be here to take delivery in theory. Order on Apple.com says "No signature required for delivery" though, so if the family decides to go cut down our tree that day, it'll probably just get tossed on my front step. Not a comforting thought...

As an aside, it's still odd to me that when I track a package like this, I get visibility almost all the way up the supply chain. It just spent the last couple days in ZhengZhou, China, including a full day waiting for clearance to be released.

The tracking feature is impressive given all the steps we can see.

Bad news for me. This morning the tracking says it went from ZhengZhou, China, two days ago to Incheon, South Korea, yesterday, but now it's back in ZhengZhou, China. Estimated arrival date went from the Friday after Thanksgiving to the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to "Scheduled delivery information is not available at this time. Please check back later."

Apple order status for mine still claims delivery on Friday, but it was last seen in Incheon on Monday. I have visions of it chucked in a pile of boxes, in a shipping container, on a container ship plowing through rough seas in the South Pacific... destined to wash up on the shore of a small uninhabited island.

EDIT: UPS now showing that it has arrived in Anchorage, AK this afternoon. I know nothing about the normal US ports of entry for goods like this, but that seems like an odd location, and more than a little out of the way. I suppose it's still possible that it could arrive here in NH on Friday, but I'm not holding my breath.

I plan to buy an 8 for at least one of my daughters for Christmas. We are locked into AT&T for a variety of reasons. As an Android guy I am not well-versed in buying current gen iPhones; I've generally bought their phones from Gazelle. Assuming I plan to simply buy the thing is there merit in getting it from somewhere other than AT&T? Is there any way to save a hundred or two?

I have noticed an issue on my iPhone X where the native iOS email app will randomly drop a message here and there. Has anyone else noticed this? It happened the first time a few weeks ago with, naturally, a super important email. I only noticed because there were a few people copied on the message and someone replied all and I received that reply. The original message was nowhere to be found. Not in my inbox, not in junk. I keep the outlook email app as backup because it works better for certain things, and when I checked that, the original email was there in my inbox right where it should be. Since then, I’ve been checking outlook app periodically and also comparing to my desktop outlook and I’ve noticed this happen maybe once every couple of days....an email just won’t show up on the native iOS app. I’m just going to switch over to using outlook on iOS as my primary email app, but it’s totally baffling.

I'd give outlook on ios a trial run before a full switch if I were you. I was forced to make the switch a few months ago (iphone 7plus) and I am not a fan. notifications popup in good time, but go to open the email direct from the notification and outlook inbox first opens. Then it updates (pulls all new email), then it opens the email. 5-10 seconds from click on notification to seeing the email. Doesn't sound like much but it's frustrating when it happens every time.

I’ve had the same problem for months now. One email every couple of days never shows up on my iPhone. But, it never happens on my iPad. I had to resort to having Outlook send me a text message notification with every incoming email, so I can tell when one is missing.

I’ve had the opposite problem - phantom emails. Little red circle will pop up, go into inbox, nothing new. Twenty minutes laters, repeat. It’s annoying as shit.

My phone (and iPad) no longer save bookmarks. I can save one and it'll be there for like 30 seconds and then poof. And then on my other device tied to the same iCloud account that bookmark isn't there but at the top of the list is a random page I had recently visited saved.

So I can't use bookmarks anymore, which really sucks. I've signed in/out iCloud, turned off Safari sync, powered on/off all devices to no avail. I give up.

Bringing Google Maps to CarPlay is the best news of this week. Apple Maps is less terrible than it used to be, but Google's still miles ahead.

Also I couldn't care less but FaceTime groupchat will make many people happy.

But most interesting IMO is the news that Safari is going to stop allowing data mining from "like" buttons and will stop sites from providing your data to 3rd party. That's a direct hit on Facebook/Google/the entire data mining community and I'm fascinating about where this goes from here.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
My wife just upgraded from a 5s to an 8+, which kinda surprised me as the small form factor of the 5s allowed her to put it into any pocket in any article of clothing. But her battery was going, and TotalWireless has some great prices on iPhones (locked to TW for 12 months of paid service), so we just couldn't say no.

First thing I noticed: the play on the home button feels so odd for an Apple product. At first, I thought the case/body was broken.

The reason for that is the home button on the iPhone 8 (as well as the 7) doesn’t physically move. The sensation you’re feeling comes from haptic feedback that’s meant to mimic the feeling of the button pressing.

For something really weird, turn the phone off and try and press the button.

The trackpads on recent Mac laptops are the same... they donp’t physically depress, there’s just vibration feedback that feels for all the world like it’s moving.

FWIW, there's a setting to customize the haptic feedback to get whatever play you want on the home button. There are three choices by default, then there are some more granular settings available within the Accessibility menu. I know what you mean, though. It caught me by surprise too.

I recalled reading that they redesigned the home button, but even knowing that it was still quite a surprise how it felt. Not like a Droid, not like a previous gen Apple, just very different.
You get used to it real fast. I prefer it to ththe physical bottom now and the same with the Magic Trackpad which is fantastic. It’s really weird when it runs out of batteries and no longer “moves”

On another note I’m running ios12 on my main iPhone 8 and it’s very fast and very stable.

Not sure where to put this but interesting “bug” I’ve run into with Apple. Had an iPhone 6. Cracked the screen 18 months ago, took it in, they said they couldn’t fix it so they gave me a new 6 for the price of just the screen. Had the same thing happen this week with the same result. So I’m now just about four years into owning my original 6 and I’ve pretty much ended up with new phones every two years from $120 each time.

Yeah, I've done this too. But aren't they technically refurbished phones? Hey, as long as they make sure the important parts, such as the battery are up to par, refurbished or new, I don't care.

Mine were fresh out of the box and I didn’t ask, so no clue. But either way I view it as getting a new screen and battery for the price of the screen, so it’s coming out ahead to me.

I haven't seen it anywhere, but the biggest improvement in iOS 12 with my iPhone 8 is around wireless charging. I have a thicker case that holds my license etc. and it was pretty hard to get it to charge with even just my license in the back of it. With iOS 12, I can charge it through my license and 2 credit cards. I've heard rumors that the wireless charging will break the chip, but I haven't seen any issue.
