#Browns coach Hue Jackson said playing WR Antonio Callaway nearly entire preseason opener was discipline for incident a week ago (possession of marijuana citation he didn’t tell team about)

Per Schefer on Twitter:
Jags have suspended Jalen Ramsey and Dante Fowler for the week. Fowler for fighting and violating team rules. Ramsey for orchestrating a social media attack against team journalists.

The team left today to travel to MN for joint practices leading up to their game against the Vikings on Saturday. Ramsey and Fowler were left behind

What the fuck? The punishment is to get reps and exposure? His ass should have been stapled to the bench for the next few weeks. The fuck is Jackson doing?

OMG. You act up in Browns-town, you get more PT. That’ll set the tone!

Hue Jackson is the worst coach in professional sports.

Also not a great look in light of the Maryland stuff, IMO.
Seriously. It sounds even worse when you read Hue Jackson's quotes about it:

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24359794/cleveland-browns-kept-antonio-callaway-game-punishment

"That was part of the consequence of what he has been through, and he knows it. That is what it was. Either you sit him or make him play. I thought it was better to make him play," Jackson said Sunday.

"Make him play as long as he could. There were a couple of times he kept waving to come out, and we said, 'No, stay in.'"

"He worked through it. There were times he had his hands -- I am sure you saw it -- he had his hands on his head like this, and he was ready to go to the sideline," Jackson said. "We said, 'Uh-uh, you are back in there.' He fought through it, came out the other side of it and made some plays. That was good."

Callaway, who was on the field for 54 plays Thursday, finished the game with three receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown on a 54-yard pass from Baker Mayfield.
That's just insane.

If I squint I can kinda see the ‘the players don’t like playing the preseason games, so he’s gonna play the whole damn thing’ line of thinking. I’m not endorsing it, mind you, but it’s there somewhere, as small and dumb as it may be.

It’s all kinds of old school dumb, but this belongs nowhere near the Maryland discussion. He was, in effect, tasked with running gassers while they were on offense. You’re not going to kill a WR doing that, or come remotely close to it. He asks out, you say no, he runs slowly and maybe puts weak efforts on tape. He’s hobbled some the next few days. That’s basically it.

Ordinarily I'd think Hue's irrational decision-making could be the result of being prodded by the HARD KNOCKS producers... but Hue probably has it in him already.

Orlando Skandrick to be released in Washington, which is going with young corners. Which is why they made no effort to bring Breeland back.

Speaking of taking a flier on a possible cut ... Paxton Lynch, anyone?

Bengals are cutting George Iloka. Wonder if the Patriots might take a look. Rapaport says it’s a financial decision, but @Rudy's Curve may be able to add more on his situation.
They tried to sign Kurt Coleman and Eric Reid before drafting Jessie Bates in the second round, so they made it pretty clear they wanted to upgrade there. That being said, I thought they'd break Bates in slowly and move on from Iloka after the year so I'm a little surprised it happened now. However, Iloka is 28 and just hasn't been the same player since he signed a big deal after 2015. I suppose you could do worse though.

Following up on some recent discussion in Roster Construction 1.0 regarding the mess that appears to be Hoyer.

So Darnold has been impressive in the ways you would figure, and whether he intended it or not, the Jets GM has added fuel to the spark that Bridgewater is available sooner than later.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24425228/new-york-jets-gm-mike-maccagnan-praises-unflappable-sam-darnold

I am a bit surprised by the apparent urgency, but maybe it’s the smart move from roster spot and cap perspective. Bridgewater too has impressed pre-season.

So where, do you figure?

Bridgewater has been tied today to Buffalo, but I don’t know there is much substance behind that.

A couple of key Jaguars injuries tonight. Marquis Lee suffered what looked to be a really bad knee injury tonight. Also, Marcell Dareus suffered a pec injury and is questionable to return.
Hooray preseason football!

There’s no way Lee isn’t out for the year. Local broadcast folks saying early word is multiple ligaments blown. Such a shame.
The #1 receiver is now Donte Moncrief. Think about that for a moment.

At this point I'm not sure Dez is better than what they have. At least Moncrieff, Cole and Westbrook can get separation and are willing to actually learn the playbook. Jags probably slide everyone up and the rookie Chark gets more looks.

Sorry if this isnt the correct thread, but this book seems like something people here will want to read.

https://boston.cbslocal.com/2018/08/27/new-nfl-book-explosive-details-roger-goodell-tom-brady-patriots/

On Goodell:
Leibovich said this to King: “I learned that Roger Goodell is very damaged, a deeply unpopular leader not only among players and fans but in the country at large. That is a big problem for the league, and every owner knows it. Roger is capable of incredible humanity, but there is a huge gap between the Roger Goodell as a human being and the cold Roger Goodell at the podium. He’s sort of straightjacketed, and he creates this very scared dynamic around the league. I don’t think he realizes how jarring it is. The league has no clue how to deal with it. I don’t think he wants to hear that, though.”
On owners and sexual harrassment:
“I learned the Jerry Richardson problem is not over. There is real concern that Jerry Richardson is the tip of the iceberg,” Leibovich told King. “With obscenely rich and powerful and aggressive people like NFL owners, there can be a commonness of not only acting in a brutish and entitled way, but also, simply, of being able to pay people off when they try to speak out. Needless to say, Richardson has no monopoly inside the membership on having engaged in outdated behavior. I think there will be other cases. The league fears there will be others.”
There's more in the article on Brady and Kraft. I haven't read the book, but I requested a copy form my library (it's on order).

Great article. Read it till the end for the very best line.

Reports and whispers and speculation about growing issues among Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have been surfacing since January, when ESPN released a rather lengthy report focused on them. That story said that the end of the run for this trio could come sooner than later. Though the relationship has clearly survived for the start of another season, Leibovich noted that the problems are very much real.

Here’s what Leibovich said to King:

I learned that the Patriots’ shaky alignment at the top — Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady — could come apart. That seemed pretty evident during and after last season. It seems really close to coming apart to me. Tom is the one I like the most. He gets the whole thing. I learned that empires crumble. Brady probably wouldn’t have minded being thrown out into the wilderness of free agency after last season.

The Globe review noted that Brady is “’fed up himself with the Belichick culture’ and has told friends, teammates, and relatives that he has earned more deference and gratitude than what he gets from the Patriots coach.”

That frustration is apparently shared by Rob Gronkowski, as well. From the Globe: “According to Leibovich, Gronkowski has told numerous people that he’s sick of going to work in such a ‘dreary monolith’ (the author’s words, not Gronk’s).”
Yeah, no shit Gronk didn't use those words.

Our reign of terror "could come apart" at any point over the last decade or so. If they keep predicting it, then one day it'll come true and they'll be able to say they predicted it. Stopped clock, etc.

Brady probably has earned more deference and gratitude than he gets from Belichick. And he knows it. But he also doesn't need that deference and gratitude to continue to enjoy doing his job, or to know that Foxborough continues to be the best place for him to ply his trade and get all that he gets out of football. He's a centered guy, with less of an ego than just about anybody in a comparable position (though more of one than he'd like us all to think he has). Deep down, he doesn't need Belichick to kiss his ass, he needs to go out on the field and crush some fools.

All this hang-wringing strikes me as projecting the writers' own insecurities onto the athletes they cover. Which I suppose partly explains the difference in life station.

Figured this was a better spot for this than in the Browns thread.
LB Mychal Kendrick has been charged with insider trading

for those who can't see the tweet:
A statement from #Browns LB Mychal Kendrick, who has just been charged by the feds for insider trading. Wow.

His statment is lengthy but he accepts responsibility and says he's been and will continue to cooperate with investigators

Packers are trading QB Brett Hundley to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2019 draft pick, per @RobDemovsky and me.
Has Colin Kaepernick stopped shaking his head when he reads these transactions?
Brett Hundley is making less than 1 million dollars this year.
Just goes to show you how bad Austin Davis and Alex McGough were (and they were both awful) when they had to spend a 6th rounder on a backup QB. Personally I think it's unnecessary, since if Wilson goes down, the season's over anyway. Kapernick would be a Seahawk if he was willing to take the vet minimum or close to it (I think he could have gotten up to $810,000 including signing bonus no more than $80,000 - which would have been a cap hit of $650K)

Aaron Rodgers gets a new contract per every NFL reporter. 4 years, $134 million. Around $100 million is guaranteed. $57.5 million signing bonus. He'll get $80 million between now and March.

Browns cut Mychal Kendricks.
Will get you substantially disciplined, your contract terminated, and possibly get you bustled out of the league:
- Trusting a financial advisor who happens to be insider trading
- Being generally aware of possible tampering with footballs
- Smoking weed as anxiety management or pain management from all the beating your body takes
- Players publicly but non-disruptively protesting police brutality

Will get you a slap on the wrist:
- Beating the shit out of your wife / girlfriend
- Regularly whipping the shit out of your 4-year-old son, with a literal whip
- Owners publicly advocating for Supreme Court nominees.
- Participation in the sports-betting industry, so long as the NFL gets a piece of the action
