Free-agent RHP Nathan Eovaldi in agreement with #RedSox, pending physical, sources tell The Athletic.

Wow! I had an irrational feeling this would happen but I could not reconcile how it could. Very very interested in the numbers.

Seeing 4 year deal.

@jtomase
The Red Sox and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi are reportedly close to agreeing on a four-year deal to keep the free agent postseason hero in Boston.

Like it. Really hope the numbers make sense though. Deals in early December rarely seem to come in under expectations, though.

He deserves $68M for the playoffs alone. Very happy to see him back.

Think this is the right move. Injury risk is real, but it’s extremely rare to get a free agent starter with his toolkit (plus plus velocity, youth, death on RHH).

It’s also a nice bonus for David Price that a close friend will remain in the clubhouse.

I was at some event last night where Cora and Pearce spoke and took questions, and someone asked about bouncing back from Game 3. Both Cora and Pearce went on and on and on about Eovaldi and how what he did meant so much to every single person in that locker room. You could really feel the love.

Oh F yes. Totally less than I thought. I'll take those for the prime years.

I'm assuming this is for the #3 starter job, not the closer.

And I concur with JSizzle

I’m all in on the deal. I’m not going to change when I see the numbers b/c DD gets it right, expecting it to make sense for everyone. Dude did something that had his teammates in awe, so glad he’s back.

I have a feeling Porcello may be on the move. They are getting really close to the 246 level and still have a thin pen.

Very nice. Dude has a lifetime grace period for me, but I'm excited to see what he can do.

This is fantastic. And sue me, I want Joe Kelly back too. I tend to doubt that I will get my wish, but a man can dream.

I wonder whether this signals that the Sox will not be super aggressive on keeping Sale after his current deal expires.

Seems like compared to last year, free agents are not waiting around to sign contracts. Guys like Donaldson didn't want to get left out in the cold and the Corbin's and Eovaldi's are snapping up best offers when they hit the table. Possible teams are moving quicker to make real offers too. It's interesting.

Excellent news. And I think the right call.

How great was that deadline trade for him and his family?!? And the Sox.

Cool. Re-signing Sale or Eovaldi was the topic on the radio last night. I was definitely in the Eovaldi camp.

Fantastic news. I guess that pretty much solves the SP handedness issues. What a win to not have to rely on Wright or one of the AAA's.

I figured he'd get 3/$50MM ($16.7MM AAV), but it looks like he earned himself an extra year and a few bucks with the remainder of his postseason. I really don't mind the extra year if it means not missing out on the three.

A lot of risk here, but I love his upside (and his actual results in 2018 with the Sox).

how much money could they really unload on that?
As long as they're not asking for a premium prospect in return, I think they could find a taker for the whole deal. 1/21M (but only a 20M hit on the luxury tax count) is in no way an unmovable deal, especially for a guy who consistently throws 180+ innings each year.

That said, I don't think trading Porcello to save $20M does them a whole lot of good. Sure that money could be redistributed into the pen, but it weakens the rotation and they're not filling his spot with a free agent for cheap. I think it would be, at best, a two steps back, one and a half steps forward thing if they did it.

The risky devil you know is better than the one you don't.

I will dream of 30 starts each from Sale, Price, Porcello, Eovaldi and EdRod. I will wake up knowing how unlikely that is, but there are worse dreams.

Kelly is the only other name on my wish list. If they got him, I'd take a nap until spring.

Four prime years at just a tick under $17m per year? So happy. Definitely not without concerns, and the reality is, during the regular season he may only end up being a 4.00-ish era kind of pitcher. But we know he's frigging NAILS in the big spots. So glad to have him back.

Agreed with the above, was afraid of escalating bidding war. Great job wrapping him up and he obviously wants to be here. Great news.

There's a market for him at 1/20. Maybe just prospects, maybe less expensive reliever(s). But they don;t need to pay part of the freight to move him.
I could see a few select teams interested. He's a good fit for San Francisco, where his home run tendencies would be kept in check and he'd stabilize a rotation destroyed by injuries to Cueto and Samardzija, but I can't tell if they're trying this year. The Angels have already put their chips in and could use him for the year Ohtani is on the shelf. Oakland has a big park and needs innings. And who knows what Brodie wants to do.

This. DD is an execution machine. He knows what he wants and gets things done. Very happy to have the Yankee slayer back for his 29-32 years, he has brass b***s.

I did NOT want to see him in Houston or NY and was afraid he would end up in one of those spots in a reactionary overpay kind of move.
This really fires me up. Love it.
