I get confused every time they mention Jill Scott and she's a lanky Englishwoman and not an early 2000s neo-soul artist.

Is Ertz the DMF? If so, she is awesome and a rock.
Yes. She'd been the starting CB for the last 6-7 years or so, including every game at the 2015 WWC (when she was known as Julie Johnston). She was the risk-taking member of a pairing with the more-conservative Sauerbrunn that was basically impenetrable, their work against Germany in the semis there was fucking incredible if you like defense.

Sauerbrunn, who is still there at CB now paired with Dahlkemper, is sometimes spoken of as the best defender in the world. So you can look pretty good playing next to her.

Also, pretty brazen of that English defender to bearhug the US player then bristle when she catches a shot to the cheek.
I don't mind it. You wanna dance with the champ, you gotta bring confidence, attitude, and be aggressive. Those are not hallmarks of classic English temperament so good on this team for taking it to us.

They're still gonna lose, mind you.

When Ertz was Johnston her go to move was the disastrous going to ground 2 footed challenge, if women's soccer was reffed like men's she'd have set the record for most red cards. I'm kind of glad she's not in the back 4 anymore.

Thanks. She's been the straw stirring the drink for the US IMO. Both Lavelle and Horan have had miscues but Ertz is protecting the D really well.

Also, that was an extremely entertaining first half. Hopefully the second half brings it too.

yeah she's basically a ball-winning machine. As long as you've got another world-class CB to put back there in her place, DM is probably a good spot for her because she can be really hard after the ball without (as CD points out) risking giving up penalties. But I didn't really know her to give up that many penalties anyway at CB.

I am watching with no sound (and not an avid follower of soccer) but I was curious if there is a reason Rapinoe is not playing today?

edit - I see ifmanis5 post now... thanks.

I'm not really following the tournament that closely, but one thing I absolutely love is how the US success irks fans from "proper football nations."

To be honest, anybody who uses the words "proper" and "football" in the same sentence should be fed into the woodchipper, Fargo-style.

California. Duh.
I'm just happy that other nations are taking women's football more seriously. 10-15 years ago when I used to travel to Europe for work a lot, I used to hear a lot of comments about how cute it was that we let our girls play.

JP: "I wonder who will be the first team to make a change here." Has he ever watched Jill Ellis coach before? It will not be her.

They still say stuff like "Americans care about womens soccer?" as a deflection to losing to the US.
