IANAD, but could be the cause of his tingling fingers and numbness he suffered last year.

Also could be the cause of the tremendous recent suck. Won't do anything to make up for the games he tanked, but hopefully he can come back stronger. Though by the time he's healthy again the season could have totally slipped away, in which case might be worth just letting him rest up for 2020 at this point.

Man, just eff this season.

Last season was SOOOOOOO awesome from start to finish, that I've been able to deal with this year, but wow. It's been somewhat of a replica of the Celtics season in how much "fun" it has been. Some great games, great performances, but just a WTH kinda thing when all put together.

If you're as dumb as me, you didn't know that TFCC stands for "Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex".

I'll also guess you don't know what that means, so here's what I found:
Ganglions are the most frequently seen soft-tissue tumors in the hand. Nerve compression due to ganglion cysts at the wrist is rare. We report 2 ganglion cysts arising from triangular fibrocartilage complex, one of which caused ulnar nerve compression proximal to the Guyon's canal, leading to ulnar neuropathy. Ganglion cysts seem unimportant, and many surgeons refrain from performing a general hand examination.
Me, I still don't follow... but I'm pretty sure nobody's really as dumb as me.

IANAD, but Ulnar neuropathy sounds like if it’s not handled in some way, it could damage the ulnar nerve, which is the one they do if a guy has Tommy John surgery... this is a rudimentary feeling just knowing what some of those ligaments are.

It's good to have confirmation that it's a physical problem rather than skills deterioration or whatever.

I think we'd much rather have taken all our good luck in one season and all our bad luck in another season than have it averaged over the two, no? Hell I'll take another couple seasons of "meh" if we can have everything come together another once or twice during the prime of the current core.

Plus, some games have been fun, if for no other reason than we're almost never out of a game with this offense we've got. We can put 19 runs up on the Yankees, so it's still mostly worth watching even if our bullpen resembles an anarchist convention.

Yeah--I'll definitely take 108 wins and a title followed by whatever this. I did read the other day that adjusted for playing time the Sox have like the 5th youngest lineup in baseball, so just get all this crap out of the way this year.

This should be fun. As I posted at the trade deadline,

The rotation has been weak, and it's probably due for one of its members to go out with an injury again. Unfortunately, there's really no good 6th starter option right now to plug into the rotation if needed.

Another few weeks of suckage and I'd just shut him AND SALE down for the year as a head start on improving next year

Who is replacing him as a starter? Brian Johnson? If it's someone in the minors, I'd guess Kyle Hart, Denyi Reyes or maybe even Daniel McGrath.

I am prone to ganglion cysts, so that makes exactly one thing I have in common with David Price.

Mine are in my feet, and I had one for many years that doctors didn’t want to touch. When I finally said “you know, this fucking hurts” they did an MRI and discovered that it had grown down into my foot, and wrapped itself around bones and nerves alike. The eventual surgery took several hours and cost me most of the golf season last year.

Of course, if I had opened my mouth at some point in the preceding 6 or 7 years, it probably would have been minor, so yeah, someone is dumber than you.

I expect he will be sharing infant duties with Tiffany in his sudden vacation
This seem a little underhanded but pardon me if I misunderstand. We can assume if the team believes he has a cyst he probably isn't making it up to spend time with his kids. Not that I would ever frown on someone from taking some paternity leave.

At this point it no longer matters. Take the rest of the year off and see ya in the Spring. We're stuck with a $32MM a year pitcher for the next three years that can not possibly live up to that contract. Nice work if you can get it!

Sincerely wish him health and happiness; enjoy the new addition to the family.

In this lost season, I can't say that I'm all that broken up about not having to watch Price or hear this miserable, self important man after games.

And, for many others, not having to hear miserable self important people complain about Price every time he pitches is also a positive.

But you’re ok with listening to a miserable, self important blowhard like Eck during games?

Yeah, ulnar neuropathy is no joke. When I was a kid somebody swung a two-by-four at me that I blocked with my right hand, and it's never really recovered. (Thank goodness we live in an era where people type instead of write longhand!) From a baseball perspective, because of the damage, I could never reliably use my ring or pinky fingers in any of my pitch grips. I got by well enough throwing four-seamers, two-seamers and a knuckle curve, but even trying something like a circle change was at best ineffective, at worst painful. Considering how much of Price's game is built on his changeup, if he's having nerve pain or even just a change in sensation, that may even be a bigger problem for him than it might be for another pitcher. Hopefully this is just a one-off and he's able to get back into the rotation and right the ship soon.

Not prone, but I've had one removed from my wrist. It came on after a fairly intense period of practicing on my guitar, one hour a night. I was told I could get it drained or removed. (In the old, old days, if you got a ganglion cyst on your wrist and it was a nuisance, apparently someone would just slam a heavy hardcover book on the thing, breaking it.) Draining seemed temporary, so I had it taken out. It wasn't a difficult procedure, though I never had to go back and throw a 90+-mile-an-hour fastball, so not sure how that alters the equation.

I am not questioning the injury.

And now I have Hall and Oates "Your kiss is on my list" stuck in my head, but it goes more like

Because hIs cyst is on his wrist

Eck isn't miserable.
I was wondering if I had been dropped into an alternative universe.

If you offered me the chance to hear Eck as the color man for all Sox broadcasts between now and the end of time, I'd hit that bid faster than David Price could make a sourpuss face.

I had the good fortune of being in the Sox Legends Box once with clients and Eck. I can't imagine a more self effacing, down to earth and fun former player to spend a game with. Not that I can say I know him, of course, but he sure seemed genuine and the opposite of miserable and self important.

When I was in medical school, one of my older orthopedic professors said when he found a ganglion of the hand he would just pick a hefty textbook and smash the cyst. (I imagine he kept the book right behind his jar of leeches).

The procedure is mostly pushing a needle through the skin and sucking out. However...

I had one removed about ten years ago. It did cause numbness, lack of mobility, and weakness in the wrist. It actually tucked itself into the tendon so they had to root it out with surgery which is why it was such an extreme case. Hopefully, Price's isn't as severe, but this thing could definitely become an issue for someone who throws a baseball for a living.
