I don’t think a dude grows up to be a pro athlete then sits quietly when a coach or GM tells him to sit out a game with a faked injury because the player who hurt him is better. They have a union and press contacts.
Exactly. I don't think gaming the system is the real obstacle here, more likely players unions balking at long injuries/suspensions, or in the rare case, career ending.

Garrett deserved everything he got but Tomlin needs to get some heat for calling a shotgun pass play down 14 with 7 seconds to play. The initial hit from Garrett on Rudolph could have lead to an unnecessary injury as well all within the rules of the game. No idea what he was thinking but the risk reward was all risk and zero reward in that situation especially when you already lost 3 offensive starters in the game.

The toilet.
I think they went way overboard on Garrett and too easy on Rudolph. Feels like black football players are held to a higher standard than white cops.

Wrong on Garrett but correct on Rudolph. Garrett violently swung a helmet at a player without a helmet. It is beyond dangerous and needs to never happen again. This suspension makes that fact likely.

Rudolf will not be pressing criminal charges, and I agree that the NFL did well on this occasion, though I wanted Rudolph to have gotten a game.

Anyone who believes that any publicity is good publicity should reflect on the speed of the NFL’s decision. They know this isn’t good. And they knew that with each passing day, the outrage industrial complex would have kept on keeping on, further burying the League.

The discipline handed down was very good and by NFL standards brilliant.

I do believe the NFL got this one right. Swing a helmet is like swinging a hockey stick or baseball bat, and so should be punished severely.

But until the helmet swing, Rudolph's actions were punishable. And Damarious Randall also should be suspended for the late hit on Diontae Johnson in which he was clearly targeting his head.

I’m hoping the suspension lasts at least one game into next season, to keep the narrative of Garrett’s douchebaggery from getting lost in the off-season sauce.

And like @lexrageorge above, I agree the Randall hit can’t be forgotten. It was the worst I’ve seen this year and needs more than a game Suspension. I hopeJohnson is okay — that looked like one he’ll live with the rest of his life.

It's not going to get lost. No matter what Garrett does for the rest of his career and his life, the first line of his obituary will be the helmet swing.

Conversely, the NFL has no interest in flaming the fire. Hell be quietly reinstated in the doldrums of the offseason.

Yeeeaaah... I may have been a touch away from sobriety during that post, but I still think they were too harsh on Garrett (although his cumulative play this year hasn't been great, I thought the hit that ended Siemian's year was pretty dirty).
I'm using "I may have been a touch away from sobriety" on a regular basis, and in a variety situations for now on, if it's ok with you.

Rereading this post made me realize your name was not Cornwallis, which struck me as funny because I’m pretty sure that was a bar near BU/Fenway back in the day.

I thought Curran summed it up better than anyone else in the media. Especially his line about Kitchens.

On the Myles Garrett front, beyond “He shouldn’t have done it…” I really had no larger take to add to the take deluge competing to have the takiest take of the day.

Clubbing an onrushing opponent with his own helmet is, in a culture constantly obsessing over the quality of a “look,” about as bad as a look can get.

But it doesn’t represent toxic masculinity, the withering of societal values, where we are in Trump’s America, a total disregard for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or warrant a move toward helmetless football. It does confirm Freddie Kitchens shouldn’t be in charge of a fifth-grade field trip, but we knew that.

Garrett lost his shit as 20-something professional athletes (and 20-somethings in general) sometimes do. Rudolph was also in the process of losing his shit and Maurkice Pouncey’s shit was also a casualty of the moment. This happens, especially when the job involves smashing into people for 50 plays and executing maneuvers during those 50 plays that would – if executed on the street – be assault.

Todd Bertuzzi, Marty McSorley, Albert Haynesworth, Juan Marichal if you really want to go back are just a few of the guys whose shit was irretrievably lost in a moment of rage. Most of Friday’s media reaction was be performative.

My reaction was more of a shrug. What are you gonna do? I’m glad for both parties there was no cranial damage, and it will be a long time before we see anything like that again. But you know what? We will probably see something like that again.

Everyone likes to make everything shiny and new. Lyle Alzado did exactly the same thing some 40 years ago.

A little off-topic, but Damarious Randall will not be suspended for the disgusting targeting shot he took at Diontae Johnson's head, which left Johnson concussed and bleeding from his head.

Seriously, NFL management seems content to allow the sport to approach the most horrific levels possible. The debacle that is Thursday Night Football, adding games to the schedule, preventing injured players from going on IR (Kelechi Osemele et als) -- I wish the players union had enough power to strike for meaningful change.

[And side note to the players union: you do a better job by your membership not blindly defending individual members like Randall and Garrett and Antonio Brown who are diminishing the overall product.]

Does that also mean no fine? From the clip, it looks like an incredibly deliberate helmet to helmet hit. Sometimes I feel like players have been flagged for stuff that really wasn't their fault - a helmet to helmet hit that occurs because the offensive player moves at the last second. But, at least from the clip, that looks like a textbook case of targeting.

Per Schefter on OTL, Garrett is accusing Rudolph of using a racial slur prior to the helmet assault.

One can argue this could be one way to reduce the suspension. Not sure what's worse, if it's true or if it's false.

I for one am SHOCKED the delayed race card was pulled by a player of Garrett's impeccable moral fiber.

Predictably, the accusation is all that's mentioned in twitter leads... because 21st century journalism :D

Just watching the event, it definitely looks like something set him off to make him see red and he also made some vague statements to suggest that he wasn't going to claim provocation, because it would sound like an excuse, but he could. Or maybe Kitchens said that. So, those facts would have tended to make this something worth considering as possible if it had come out earlier and in the immediate aftermath. But absent some viable explanation for why he waited to reveal this bit of potentially mitigating information when the whole world was condemning him, it doesn't really seem to add up.

He was already being condemned after being spiked in the dick, maybe he thought citing the slur would make it look like he wasn’t taking responsibility. He was probably told at first to just put his head down and apologize rather than explain, but after a few days and seeing Rudolph skate, he might’ve reconsidered.

Pouncey and DeCastro were there, right? I know Rudolph’s their teammate, but if he said anything you’d expect some wtf moment on their faces or a little less rush to fight Garrett.

Seems like the NFL wasn’t impressed with the explanation. We’ll never know. Just an unfortunate episode all around.

Yikes. If it really is the situation that he fabricated the whole thing, that's really bad.

Especially, since Rudolph was pulling at Garrett's helmet while they were on the ground. Not that it justifies pulling Rudolph's helmet off, but it's a pretty easy defense to say "He was trying to pull my helmet off, so I showed him how to do it by pulling his helmet off".

Who knows if this is true, but MR is from Rock Hill SC and went to OKsT - not exactly bastions of progressive culture.
Of course MG could be using this as cover

Regardless - MR went for the helmet rip first and the kick to the junk and then even after mG got dragged away by the OL, MR got up and chased after MG.

Slur or not - MR got off easy for his garbage actions.

I don’t think it’s fair to analyze the likelihood MR said anything based on where he grew up or went to school when there’s no other corroborating evidence and two witnesses.

On the other hand, I agree he got off easy from the NFL. Maybe they’re crediting him with time served for taking the helmet hit. Which kind of condones the vigilante justice, but it’s the only reason I can think of.

Well, Rudolph got a big fine, but it does seem a bit odd that 3 other players got suspensions and he didn't.
