Ian Browne misspells Christensen. Its spelled V-a-n.

Edit: To clarify, that's my way of saying welcome back LJ!

One of the weirdest internet life meets real life moments of my life was when my sister asked me if I knew who Sam Horn was. I thought she'd discovered my posts and was about to shame me in front of the family. It turns out he used to pop in to MGH when she was doing her residency there and chill with the doctors and cheer up the patients. She said he's just a giant, super sweet and affable man.

Great article. It doesn't get said enough how grateful we are that you guys started it and that Nip is carrying the banner.

And... welcome back.

Horn partnered with Christensen, and the former slugger is now the president of the website, though he is the first to admit he lets other people run it. Christensen, who has made a career working in paper mills, is no longer involved.

“It takes a lot of work to run a website and update a website and all of that, so I told the people, as long as you don’t do anything negative, it can only be a positive for me because it’s positive social media,” Horn said. “It wasn’t big at the time, but it got big. I remember getting 300,000-plus unique visitors at one point.”
A President we can all support.

And lest we forget it, in addition to this estimable site, "getting a horn" , coined by Baltimore's Mike Flanagan, is striking out six times in one game. Sam's name will, indeed, live forever in baseball history.

Growing up, I got to watch Sam in Single A ball in Winston-Salem - along with Greenwell, Benzinger, Dana Kiecker, and a couple other future Sox. But he was my favorite (how could he not be?!). I have a clear memory of looking up to him and getting his autograph on the field after he hit a game-winning home run (I think). I still have that autograph.

In looking at old rosters, this had to have been the 1984 team. They became a Cubs affiliate in 1985.

Yes. Tim (Nip) and I both live in Greenville and do stuff. We have talked about it. This is 100% Tim’s baby. We owe this all to him for the last 15 yrs at least.

Tim is definitely the tech guy who helped me move the forums off of ezboard around 2003 or 2004(?) and after that remained the tech guy and eventually the owner in the late 2000's after the dotcom crash had me tapping out. Tim is the best thing that ever happened to this community, though, and he's a good friend. However, Sam was, in fact, my business partner after the site got big in 2003; we hosted a World Series trophy party at the Commonwealth after the Sox won the 2004 World Series and did a few other events after that...

To say SoSH is "100% Tim's baby" is false, though. He came on board after we got hit with a massive influx of new members when Bill Simmons shared the SoSH link on his Boston Sports Guy page on Digital City in the early 2000's. Tim volunteered his technical savvy and I sure didn't turn it down! He's a terrific guy and the lifeblood of the site and the only guy I trusted to hand the keys over to because he was both involved and really good at internet stuff... but the collective father is the OG posters like MikeF, FoxinSox, PaulM, Maalox, StillCursingBucky, TonyC, PhillySoxFan, LesM, Purist, myself(Lanternjaw), Diehard3, and several others (apologize for forgetting off the top of my head). Sam came into the fold sometime in 2003 when SoSH was getting a ton of press.

This is my way of saying "I love you, Nip!" and that Tim is certainly SoSH's daddy now... and I thank him tremendously for maintaining the standards we've always held.

I apologize as it appears that I did not phrase it well. I was talking present tense as the article said Horn was currently involved. I am sorry if I offended.

All of what you said, Detts, and what LJ (Lanternjaw, NOT Live Journal) said sounds like how I remember our ancient history here.

IIRC, Sam was at the 2005 or 2006 Bash at Copperfields for the pregame party

I can affirm her impressions, I worked for the Red Sox from 87-89 (nothing glamorous, I was security staff, but the perks rocked), so I got to see a lot of him. I can’t tell you how many times I helped Sam carry in the luggage after road trips. He was the nicest guy you’d ever meet.

I've always thought that his was the perfect name to attach to the site. When I started lurking around 2000, via Art Martone, most of the members were probably within a 10-year age range. Sam is a pure distillation of what being a fan is for us.

If you go up to any Sox fan of a certain age and mention him, you will always get a smile as they remember that incredible run he had and what a lovable guy he turned out to be, then a wistful bit of wondering of what might have been. He's what being a fan is all about wrapped up in one massive human being.

Oh lord, Art Martone. I have him to thank for this site - but Art Martone was, basically, the best Sox writer in the 90s. *sigh* I feel like pre-Schilling, he was the biggest booster of the site.

And yeah, I have no idea why Sam Horn was never made a full-time DH. Maybe born too soon, another Smead Jolley that could've been.

Joe Morgan really hated Sam. I mean really hated him. Maybe because he couldn’t field a position? That I can’t answer, I just recall from my time there that when they debarked the bus after road trips Sam was the only one he wouldn’t say goodbye to. Sam, however, was the nicest guy on that team. We peons loved him because he was basically the only one that didn’t treat us like dog flap.

I had never heard this before. Morgan seemed like a weird dude in a lot of respects. But until Francona came around, he was the best Red Sox manager I'd ever seen. Though TBH, I think that's more a commentary on the men that came before and after Morgan, rather than on Morgan himself.

Morgan was a little old school, and I didn’t mean the story as a commentary on his abilities as a manager. Grady Little he wasn’t. It was just a case of a coach/manager just not liking a player and the higher ups preferring to hold on to the asset in hopes that things would change. It happens all the time.
