Serious question. What does “to God be the glory” mean? Is there an implied comma after “God”? Is it weird translation from Greek? Is it actually a construction that makes sense in a weird way? Was “be” like a synonym for “is” or something?

Or is it just one of those things people say without ever pausing to think about what it actually means. Why not just say “God gets all the glory”?

Funny thing is there are many southerners who don’t think of the Virginias or the Carolinas as the south.
Maybe like Charlotte North Carolina, but South Carolina is pretty Deep South in my experience.

if you’re talking about something like Hilton Head, I could see it.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory? Maybe it’s straight from Latin?

Don't we have a member with ref experience? I'd love to hear from him.
Thought it was incomplete live. Didn’t think there was enough “clear and obvious” evidence on review to overturn. So I guess I think they got it right the wrong way.

The rule requirement is ball, body part inbounds, and an element of “time” that is obviously very subjective. In an effort to define the time period the rule book has added things like “football move” but it’s still about the amount of time.

By the way, the targeting foul was clear and obvious. He hit a player with forcible contact with the crown of the helmet. Runner lowering his head is irrelevant because the “helmet to helmet” is irrelevant. He could have hit the runner in the leg with his helmet and it is still a foul and ejection. That part of the rule is meant to protect the player doing the hitting, not the player getting hit.

Opening at 3.5. Were I a gambling man (apart from the $100 I put on Burrow to win the Heisman before the season started) I would pound that.
before the season started?? How much did your cash out on that?

Thanks, I really appreciate the insight.

It’s the name (and opening line) if a hymn I remember well from my days as a kid growing up in a Southern Baptist church:

1 To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life gate that we may go in.

Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory, great things he has done!

Thanks. It makes sense as a bit from a song where you have to rearrange things to make them fit or rhyme. It just seems like such a weird way to express the concept after a football game where you have an unlimited way of choosing words to express yourself.

I overthought it though. I think everyone gets what he means. This happens to me where like you walk past something and your robe gets caught on a door knob or something. That happens in my brain with words sometimes.

What.
Does Clemson get 3 long touchdowns if Wade wasn’t ejected?
Do the dinosaurs go extinct without the Chicxulub meteor? So many unanswerable questions, so little time....

edit: Isn’t the real question, “Does Wade get ejected if he doesn’t bury the crown of his fucking helmet into the side of Trevor Lawrence’s head?” Go ahead and hate the rule, but the call was correct.

New Orleans is going to maybe be the best party ever, it’ll basically be a LSU home game.
During the 1990s - early 2000s, NOLA hotels and restaurants would always complain when LSU made the Sugar Bowl because receipts would be less than they were with distant schools with larger traveling fan bases (e.g., tOSU, Michigan, Alabama, etc...). Having a school an hour or so up the road dented profits. Not sure if that is still the case.

Also, Ohio State pretty much forgot how to score after taking a 16-0 lead. I doubt Wade could’ve helped them with that.

I’m a little surprised about the complaints about what was pretty clearly the correct call. I did think Ross caught and fumbled the ball though.

The Vorp Orange Bowl is tonight. These are my 2 teams, I’m an alum of both schools, and I’m not sure I care enough to watch. What a joke of a “big time” bowl game.

It's one bowl though that fits the name. 2 teams with orange as their secondary color. And if someone like you, a sports fan, with strong ties to both schools, isn't watching, then we have too many bowls for sure.

Does a 7-5 MAC team really deserves a bowl? Cut down the bowls to 30 at most, although 24 or 24 is probably best IMHO. And schedule them better. And not have bowls pick teams based on who sells the most hotel rooms.

4 Star Georgia Tech recruit Bryce Gowdy died last nigh after getting hit by a train. Unconfirmed reports say it was an intentional act. So freaking sad.

The article I just read about Gowdy had clinical depression written all over it. Seems impossible that someone with such talent and success could be ill, but it happens.

The projected starter at Washington State in 2018-19 shot himself after the end of the previous season. ESPN ran a story about it and his brother, who's playing at South Carolina. It's why Gardner Minshew ended up playing at WSU his final year of eligibility.

ASU vs. FSU in The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl (that's seriously the name).

Both announcers wearing tiger themed ties. Ugh.
