* My preseason "Watch" list of teams who can rise to reach the Final Four if things fall right include Oregon and Florida among the bigger names with Oklahoma State and San Diego State as my Major League Sleepers. The Aztecs are my secret sleeper team who struck it HUGE with the transfer protocol so keep an eye on them late nights this winter and in March. While I don't know if this team is capable of reaching a Final Four do NOT be surprised to include Liberty on your Sweet 16 line come this March. They have 7 players avg between 7.8 and 11.3 PPG so if you are a big time school you may find them very difficult to prepare for so watch out for them in the tourney. Two SEC teams are shelling out cash in pay games to host them this month.....I expect the Flames to win in Vanderbilt (they really should be a road fav) and then on Dec 29 play a Sunday afternoon game @LSU which will be a great bellweather game in which they will also win if LSU takes them lightly.
Don’t know how my college hoops rant last month was in the betting thread in Port Cellar but taking this relevant snippet and bringing it here for today. Liberty is still unbeaten, won at Vandy a few weeks ago and today travel to LSU for an afternoon game where all anyone on campus has been focusing on all weekend is the football team while it’s one of Liberty’s biggest games of the year. Not a really fair assessment with a large intangible factor favoring Liberty but again expecting them to win on the road here and wouldn’t be surprised at it being by a significant margin.

Florida A&M, entering game 1-9 from playing exclusively road pay games, pulled off the years biggest upset that nobody noticed last night as 26-point underdogs to Iowa State after trailing by double digits who played without my binky Haliburton. One projection system has this as the NCAA’s biggest pre-game upset since 2008.

Roughly a six-figure pay day and your schools first win over a Major Conference team in 20 years after 71 straight losses. Nice way to end 2019! Go Rattlers!!

Hoos lose at BC. I knew UVA was down but that’s a stunner.
So good they not only made the BC thread or the ACC thread but the overarching MBB thread. When they went down 48-45, I thought it was over but they hung in there.

Its not the UVA of the last 2 years, but it's a good win, we're no UMBC.

I just hope that doesn't extend christian's leash

BC hit a lot of tough contested shots. My hoos are struggling to create offense this year. People will say UVA always struggles on offense but they've always been efficient just low possession games. They've been very strong on D this year- very good win for BC.

Razorbacks battled a good LSU team on the road for 40 minutes before succumbing by 2. Impressive effort.

Great finish out in Moraga, California heading into Overtime. Coming off a 4OT loss to Pacific, this St. Mary's team needed a stop on the final possession to secure a 2-point win but BYU's incredible TJ Haws put on a nifty inside-out dribble move to break his defenders ankle and no help came as he went in for a game-tying dunk with seconds remaining. We are now in OT as BYU is playing without injured (again) star Yoeli Childs. Look out for these Cougars in March if Childs is healthy......combining him with Haws and Toolson this team has a chance to win a couple games in this tournament.

If you're a college basketball fan you should not be missing his Haws/Jordan Ford matchup. This is college basketball at its finest.

Edit: Contested off-balance 3 by Haws that would have sent game to a 2nd OT rattles out and the Gaels escape with the win. After the final buzzer you'd think that Jordan Ford would be celebrating with his teammates, right? Wrong. He follows the sideline official out toward the corner of the floor (while his teammates are at center court celebrating) to make his point that Haws had stepped on the sideline prior to missing his would-be game tying shot. This is the type of player who finds a niche in the NBA if he gets the opportunity. So awesome.

That game was awesome. Wanted another OT and thought we would get it when Haws got a look from 3 point land.

Yup. I so wanted that shot to go down because I didn't want this game to ever end. The next time I hear somebody whine about the state of college basketball I want to have the replay link ready to send to them. It doesn't get any better than what we witnessed tonight.

Syracuse/Virginia go to OT 43 to 43. Syracuse catches fire in OT to pull off the upset in Charlottesville.

It was a shootout in OT with Syracuse outscoring the Cavs 20 to 12. The O/U for this game is 114.5. Bad beat for those who had the Under.

Had bunch of action on this one. Lost the Under in ugly fashion but had Syracuse +7.5 and +265 on the money line. Still unsure why the sharps aren't hammering these dogs playing at Virginia or how their power ratings still have them so high. Even if the rating was that high you have nearly a 10-pt dog with a total just over 100......these are analytical auto plays.

Wichita State playing like they have never seen a press before. 9 point lead with a minute to go down to 3 with 10 seconds to go and UConn has the ball.

Edit: UConn ties it on a 3 with 1.6 seconds to go.

Pete Gillen and Steve Lappas are excellent on commentary for this game.

I cannot get enough of watching Arizona this year. Nice Mannion is must-see tv for anyone who appreciates point guard play. It's a shame for the college game that he's going to be a One-and-Done.

Sam Diego St visits Fresno tonight. One of the Aztecs few roadblocks to an unbeaten regular season. Streaming it!

How about those Dayton Flyers? 16-2 and ranked 13th in the country. 2 losses came in OT.

Thrilling win in OT tonight against St. Louis on a 3 from Jalen Crutcher with 0.1 to go to win 78-76.

Ref swallowed his whistle too when Crutcher put the ball on the floor as that was an easy block call during the first 44:57 seconds of the game. Would have been one controversial ending had he not knocked down the shot. This Dayton team is really really good. They didn't play their best tonight yet still won a conference road game against a high quality team.

I don’t know where that guy is from but I can tell a story now. One day the old man that was teaching us Brazilian jiu jitsu said, “ok guys now we’re going to train for in case someone tries hit you with a chair”

I made some comedic comments about the likelihood of that, I guess he is the Master for a reason.

seriously though, that guy:
(1) made a hard foul that might've been a flagrant all on its own
(2) stood over the guy he just fouled, I guess trying to intimidate?
(3) threw the first punch as people pushed him away
(4) grabbed a fucking CHAIR and was about to turn some M-Fer into hamburger until someone wisely grabbed it
...all because he didn't like that the K-State player stole the ball with 5 seconds left.

Like, say what you will about Ron Artest, at least he was provoked.

I'm on the opposite side of this.

1) K-State player going for the steal when Kansas is trying to dribble out the clock in a blowout is bush league.

2) Gets blocked cleanly. And yes, Kansas player steps over him, but so what? Technical was called.

3) K-State players leave the bench and gets physical first and escalates this entire thing.

What I didn't get was the black dude in the white pants, dark blue shirt, and glasses positioned just behind and to the left of the goal stanchion. A sideline "security" rep or some kind of event staff?? Looks like De Sousa is taking a swing at someone and misfires and lands one on this dude's face instead. Later on, you can see the guy exiting stage right and disappearing down a tunnel.

That would be true Freshman Dajuan Gordon. He's not a scrub and wasn't in the game to close out the clock. He's a regular off the bench (averaging over 20 minutes/game). So he should know the "protocol". Wasn't like those 2 points were going to pad his 6.8 ppg average.

Here's a strange one. Michigan point guard Zavier Simpson crashed a car into some kind of pole (type of pole as yet unidentified) at 3am, gave a fake name to the cops, but they recognized him. Turns out the car wasn't his, it belonged to the Michigan AD's wife. This occurred on Jan 26.
The next day Simpson received a 1 game suspension from Juwan Howard for violating team rules. On Wed, Simpson received a traffic citation for driving too fast for conditions.

Any truth to the rumor that this is the AD's wife:

What a bananas ending to Harvard\Yale. How does Harvard foul Swain on a 30 foot 3 pointer up 4 with 2 seconds to go? Swain banks it in. Making everything in crunch time. 27 points in the 2nd Half. After a long review to adjust the clock from 0.9 to 2.1, Swain is sufficiently iced and is way short on the game tying free throw.

My URI Rams not ready for primetime, as they lose to 81-67 on the road to a great Dayton team. It really wasn't that close, the teams traded baskets for the final 35 minutes after the Flyers raced out to a 17-0 lead. Those guys have a great overall roster, it struck me that Obi Toppin really doesn't have to play hero ball with his teammates stepping up like they do. Toppin won't be one of those stars who gets into bad habits and inefficiency that may follow him to the NBA due to needing to carry his team.

I went to Memphis-UConn yesterday. Danny Hurley is this close to having it rolling again. The crowd yesterday was like the old days. The passion and intensity he shows on the sidelines is awesome. They've been snakebitten this year with a number of close OT losses. James Bouknight is going to be a star. If Hurley can hit on 1 or 2 more of his top targets the glory days will be back again in the Big East. It sucked to see Akok Akok go down with a torn Achilles yesterday.

UConn is one of the best 14-11 AAC teams you will ever see. They lost 2OT games to ranked Xavier and Wichita State, lost a pair of two possession games to ranked Villanova and Houston.....and a bunch of other tight games down the stretch. Watch out for the Huskies in their Conference Tournament as they are going to give some team fits.
