I'm glad it's over...stick all the pins you want in your John Henry voodoo doll. I'm looking forward to this season, because I think they'll outperform the low expectations here.

Don't beat up Bloom too much. Sounds like this was his prime directive by ownership and everybody in baseball knew it. Hard to make a favorable deal under those circumstances.

so now we can start wishcasting about getting under the luxury tax and gong all in on mookie next year right? can verdugo play CF? 2021 rotation sale/erod/eovaldi/graterol/groome, starting OF Benintendi/Verdugo/Betts.

We. Likely. Don't. Know. All. The. Details. Yet.
Most reports seem to be implying that Brusdar and Verdugo are the pieces. Money going with Price seems to be the one missing detail. And not sure how that affects the logic of the Twins trading Brusdar for Maeda unless there are other unreported players going to MIN from LA, but there has been no indication of that.

also seems like Bloom must really like graterol if he managed to wrangle the twins into a three team deal. Rays have been pretty good evaluators of pitching talent recently

Agreed, he's cleaning up the salary mess left to him by others.
It's still going to be a tough transaction on his resume- the guy who had to dump a HOFer for Door #3.

Garbage return that could have been had in July. Dodgers got Mookie and half of Prices contract for Verdugo. Lmfao. Bloom got played. Brusdar is just as likely to be a reliever as an SP. God this sucks. I'm sorry about this...but holy christ this is the worst possible return given the team is paying half of Prices deal.

So just Verdugo and Brusdal? Is it confirmed only two players or is there more from the Dodgers side?

I just don’t understand why you don’t play it out until July if this is the package.
The package isn't bad all things considered.

In July the Dodgers will likely be 7 games up and maybe wouldn't offer as much. And the Sox could be in race and unable to deal him.

One year of Mookie given and we get two decent cost controlled players, under the cap, and out from under Price at least to some extent.

This is what baseball is in 2020.

Oh man. Can't wait for the reaction if the Sox deploy the "opener".

And even more importantly would only get about $10 million in cap relief instead of $27 million.

A big piece of the value to the Sox, unfortunately, was savings under the tax threshold which are more than halved if they wait until the deadline. Plus the acquiring team doesn’t get a pick if Mookie walks. So not sure the return is massively higher, and the Sox don’t get the one thing they seem to value most in luxury tax savings.

Any idea on how much payroll flexibility this creates for the Sox this year? Curious to see their budget for adding talent this spring.

I'm already impressed with Bloom, pulling off this bold trade and getting a pretty impressive return

Are we finally over losing Anderson Espinoza with the fire-balling Graterol pick up?

Sad day as well though as many others have pointed out. Mookie was one of my favorite players ever - probably a lot of other people feel this way. Just a good (and humble) guy and a great player. You really couldn't ask for a better player to root for

the downside on Graterol is he profiles more as a reliever. but that's technically the most likely result of every prospect

Bloom chose his pitcher, let's see if he's right

Couple of questions. Could w have subsidised Price to Minn for Brusdar?

Second, could we get international money to get the Cuban?

We like Bloom. I've seen his work from day one in Tampa Bay.

Contrary to some of the conventional wisdom on this board, I like this trade for the long haul. A few thoughts:

1. Mookie is not Yaz. Yaz did not rebuff consistent team efforts to sign him to a long-term contract. Mookie probably doesn't want to re-sign with the Red Sox, and the Red Sox couldn't and shouldn't afford his contract demands.
2. This isn't really about saving John Henry's money. This is about re-setting the Red Sox payroll to avoid long-term luxury tax and draft penalties that hamstring the team's future competitiveness.
3. Jettisoning Price has to be considered a positive. While he may be a great teammate, he's a distraction and a public-relations albatross in the Boston media market.
4. Two major league ready prospects with nearly a decade of control between them strike me as a decent haul for 1 year of an un-resign-able Mookie and a guy none of us should be sad to see go.
5. Payroll flexibility! Bloom just undid all of Dombrowski's subpar payroll management, and now has a much cleaner slate to work with going forward.

They got 2 top prospects and a cost savings of almost $50 million for 1 year of Betts and half of Price's deal. Stop it.
2 prospects with injury concerns. Brusdar could very well become a reliever. Sorry but for a top 5 player this needs to be more. Even with the money being saved.

If they are carrying $16m for Price they will be about $23m under the tax minus whatever the two players ding back add (not much).

This. Mookie isn’t saying “sign me”, he wants to reach FA and max his money. It was unlikely he would be retained.

Because I was talking about the Twins/Dodgers deal.

We don't know how the Twins value Maeda and competing now versus what Brusdar could be.

Seems like this is a fantastic trade talent-wise for the Dodgers. They get a massive upgrade from Verdugo to Betts and another pretty decent upgrade from Maeda to Price.

The money is obviously important, but they just got MUCH better.
