Seattle Dragons @ DC Defenders kicks off the new XFL season at 2PM tomorrow on ABC, followed at 5PM by the LA Wildcats @ the Houston Riughnecks on FOX. 2 more games on Sunday!
I share your dream.I really need this whole thing to destroy Vince McMahon.
Because the quality of play will suck, or because no one will find any compelling storylines?First week ratings will be good. By week 3 or 4 it will be a disaster. Again.
Because Landry Jones is the face of the league. It's mediocre minor league football played in the off-season. You aren't going to change fully ingrained watching habits with a no-name leagueBecause the quality of play will suck, or because no one will find any compelling storylines?
So...both?Because Landry Jones is the face of the league. It's mediocre minor league football played in the off-season. You aren't going to change fully ingrained watching habits with a no-name league
Pretty much. I was just going to answer "yes" but thought I'd impart more wisdom.So...both?
Mediocre is the right word.Because Landry Jones is the face of the league. It's mediocre minor league football played in the off-season. You aren't going to change fully ingrained watching habits with a no-name league
the AAF failed because it was financially mismanaged, not because the football was poor or because people weren't tuning in.First week ratings will be good. By week 3 or 4 it will be a disaster. Again.
This clearly shows that you know nothing about the XFL.Give me the Defenders (-7.5) and the Wildcats (+5.5).
this was well doneWill he still care?
They will just introduce stipulations then. Cage Match, Loser Leaves Town, etc. (I don’t like that second one)First week ratings will be good. By week 3 or 4 it will be a disaster. Again.
Strictly speaking, the AAF failed because they ran out of money. The XFL won't, at least not in Week 8 or whatever it was the AAF got through. They have the funding to spend three seasons building the the things you're alluding to -- stars, rivalries, reasons to care -- and then sell the broadcast rights, at which point they can start recouping their losses. Not saying it will work, but they have a runway the AAF didn't.Mediocre is the right word.
Alliance of American Football level of play was essentially high level college ball without all that goes along with college ball - bands, massive stadiums, tradition, and rivalries.
The product itself was perfectly fine. Not great but fine - sort of like Chili's. And it didn't work.
Why would this work? The problems are structural. Sports right now are about stars. People want stars.
View: https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/1226209004084396034The XFL, before kickoff, has already surpassed ticket sales revenue for the entire season of the AAF.
I looked up tickets for MetLife. The prices aren’t bad. Normally 150 face Jets ticket can be had for ~40 (assuming I looked at it right).
Do you know anything about Vince McMahon??? Rooting for his vanity project to fail is much better sport that whatever is taking place on the field.I'll never wrap my head around how much people love hating on the XFL. If sub-NFL football isn't your thing or you don't think it's going to work, that's fine, but why the vitriol? Let them fail in peace. In the meantime, a lot of players, coaches, etc. are going to make real money. The only loser is Vince. This isn't something people should enjoy pissing on.

Go Defenders.
Thank god for rich dude's vanity projects, or there wouldn't be an NFL or an AEW or whatever is cool to like these days.Do you know anything about Vince McMahon??? Rooting for his vanity project to fail is much better sport that whatever is taking place on the field.
Maybe the NFL will make beating/covering the spread a playoff tiebreakerSeeing the spread and the over under on the scoreboard is most certainly going to happen in the NFL next few years.
Better than "conference" record, or the randomness of a head to head record, that's for sure.Maybe the NFL will make beating/covering the spread a playoff tiebreaker
They should start showing prop bets in near-real-time on the scoreboard, with keypads at every seat.Seeing the spread and the over under on the scoreboard is most certainly going to happen in the NFL next few years.
This was a very well executed and displayed post. They should start showing prop bets in near-real-time on the scoreboard, with keypads at every seat.
