Is the media really up in arms about Verdugo's incident, or is it SOSH that's worked up? I haven't heard a single Red Sox fan friend mention it in the real world. Nor have I seen anything about it in the few media pieces I've read so far.
I'm not in the Boston area, but I have heard nothing about this outside of SoSH.

You should perhaps go to the Verdugo thread. If you have and you are accusing other SOSH members of “virtue signaling,” you should post it there so that we can respond. If you are referring to a discussion you read elsewhere, you should probably make that clear. “More“ is a bit ambiguous.
You're right, that was a lapse on my part, and I removed the post.

FTR, I was not referring to anything on SoSH, merely to the general tendency these days to turn anything/everything into an opportunity to share one's preferred takes on political/cultural matters.

where I was last at
I was having a little fun with #s, doing a discounted WAR flow on the menage a Mookie.

My assumptions (and these were not backed into)

Mookie is an 7-8 WAR player that the Sox will forego for 1 year
I tacked on a 2 WAR premium as a signing advantage to the LAD's so the Sox are shipping out ~ 10 WAR in value

They will be receiving

Verdugo estimated as a 3 WAR player under control for 4 years

Grat is a 0 WAR player under control for 6 years

I PVed the under control years at a 15% discount rate

On this basis, with these assumptions, its pretty damn close, but a lot hinges on Verdugo being a 3-WAR player annually for the next 4 years

its still going to suck even if Verdugo is a 3-WAR guy while Betts is putting up 7-10s.

Where is the man with all the money?
It's cheap at half the price!
Who will buy
Who will buy
This wonderful feeling?
I'm so high
I swear I could fly
Me, oh my!
I don't want to lose it
So what am I to do
To keep the sky so blue?
There must be someone who will buy...
Must be someone
Must be someone
Must be someone
Who will ... buy?

I assume May is off-limits, but a comparable replacement for Graterol would be Gonsolin or Downs+Gray.

up to Friedman. I bet he tries to shop Maeda around again, but...

Now that the FO has been given a second chance, let's not trade the second best player in baseball for a low character guy with sketchy medicals. Figure out another way to work the money.

Verdugo is still the centerpiece... if he pans out he will outproduce Mookie & Price easily over his controllable years vs. Mookie's 2020 and Price's 20-22

people are undervaluing Verdugo heavily (but admittedly his makeup makes him more likely to bust in Boston which is petrifying)

Well, it’s showdown time at the OK Corral. Friedman now has to decide if he wants Mookie and Price badly enough to add another piece who is major league ready.. Deal making can generate a fatigue factor. It can be inordinately complex. You get tired of dealing with your opposite number, his style annoys you, he repeats the same arguments, and if there’s a legitimate reason to walk, which there is, you do so. I’m not suggesting that Bloom annoys Friedman, just that you can reach a conclusion that the deal won’t.

Friedman isn’t in a box. He can let Mookie stay put, or walk for a year to wherever, and still be a major player for Mookie in 2021. He’s got the resources to do it, and he doesn’t have to deal w the complications of Prices contract, or for that matter his temperament. He still has Maeda, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing.

Edit: straightened out some syntax.

Grat was supposedly the #53 rd ranked prospect in MLB, which if the Sox want a highly regarded prospect pitcher would theoretically put May (32) or Gray (75) in play.

And if not, maybe Henry can save a few more Price dollars and maybe Magic can throw in some Laker courtside seats.

Might start rooting for the Twins. That was slick of (looks it up) Thad Levine trying to offload a hyped prospect with a flawed shoulder. That's presuming his shoulder isn't spaghetti (sounds like it isn't) and presuming LA/BOS were the ones who came to them.

Almost hustled the whales to add Maeda for a team that mashed its way to 101 wins last year.

May have to take Pollack back or even Maeda?
According to Cot's, Pollack is at $18mil this year and $13 in '21 with a $5mil buyout in '22.

Only way that works is if the Dodgers buy Price out completely, right?

I'm just thinking he might be the preference here because of Verdugo's off-the-field stuff. Pollack is a CT guy, from RHAM High.

Good for the Twinkies. Puts the pressure on LA and BOS to reach a deal quickly.
Hope the Twins pull-out kills the deal.

I’d rather keep Betts for a year and overpay Price rather than have Verdugo plus anyone the Dodgers might add. Screw the luxury tax. They’re the 3rd-richest team in baseball. Suck it up, play Mookie in 2020 and resign him as a free agent for whatever he’s asking.

Changed the thread title and resisted using the phrase 'Winter of Waffling'.

Well now the Red Sox have a lot of leverage. LA has to dig into their prospect pool to get this done.
From the Twins’ perspective they were giving fair value for an end of the rotation starter who was likely to cost them around $10 million if he performed up to expectations. It was definitely LA’s problem to bridge the gap.

Friedman should just move on see what happens with his team this year. They're good and will be competitive. If they don't win the World Series, then go hard after Mookie then.

Verdugo is pretty good. Of course he is no Mookie, and will never be Mookie, but Fangraphs projects him at 3.2 WAR and Mookie at 5.9. I think the Dodgers can get by with Verdugo for another year and see how things shake out.

edit: If the internal valuations of all the players involved don't line up, they don't line up.

That's great, but that's not how this will play out. Everyone on the team making more than $5mm will be on the block immediately, every player will be asked about this every day, and the team is likely to go into fire sale mode upon the first losing streak.

Keeping Betts costs the team $40.5mm this year, including the luxury tax penalty. Betts likely won't be back again after playing in this fish bowl this year under these circumstances. Why would he? He's not taking a hometown discount.

Are you not entertained?? This is some great drama. Better than actually watching the games.
Admittedly I have stopped caring almost entirely about other sports, but the whole offseason has been awesome, like one long trade deadline where I am refreshing Twitter 24/7.
