Hope this is a good wake-up call. The Reds haven’t played really well for a month or so. With the league wrapped up and the undefeated streak gone they can concentrate on the CL and the FA cup.

And if they were going to lose, being soundly thumped is probably better .. no whining about VAR decisions , no unlucky bounces deciding things.

I'm not completely sure but just going by the article that you posted along with it, it seems like the sentiment is similar to that of RB Leipzig. Despite the 1899 in the team name, the soccer club really hasn't been anything until quite recently. Hoffenheim is a tiny town and Hopp essentially bought his way into the Champions League...which of course is rich coming from Bayern fans.
We are having a similar problem here today (in Berlin, vs Wolfsburg).

I can’t tell exactly what is going on, but there was a sign that said something to the effect of, “fuck the DFB”. The players all came over to the ultras end and seemingly were all, “wtf?” They stopped the game before halftime. I thought it was halftime and now they are back on the field. There was just an announcement that we are at level 2 (of 3) of some kind of disruption protocol.

getting chippy. Even Carlo was trying to mix it up.
Not sure what’s up Davies’ ass, though. He started that mess.

So no other club thought it was worth bringing Fernandes over before this? He's so much fun.

It’s really annoying that United finally made a good signing. If Pogba hadn’t essentially downed tools they’d be starting to be on to something

If VAR hasn't killed an Everton fan today, then Pickford surely has.

It’s destroying the game. Everton and their fans are rocking and everyone stops while waiting a decision. And then of course it’s a crap one, that goes the exact same way whether he’s there or not. De Gea is wrong footed by the deflection.

Probably five or ten years ago I was a huge proponent of replay in sports generally. Now that it's here, it's absolutely brutal in every sport. I'd rather them get the calls wrong than this.

Why doesn't the deflection of Maguire negate the offside? Doesn't an attempt to play the ball by the defender negate any offside?

I feel bad for Stones, the last thing he needed is another high-profile mistake. The hate directed at players like him (and, to bring Arsenal into it, Mustafi and Luiz) is far too harsh for guys playing a game for our viewing enjoyment. (To be clear, I am not referring to any SoSH comments here, just Twitter, etc.)

With that said, his role on the England squad is in jeopardy. You have to think that Joe Gomez and Harry Maguire are ahead of him at this point.

That game was Pickford in a nutshell. Misses the easy save and then preserves a result with two worldies at 90'.

Ten-cent head.

Toffees were poor in the first half, De Gea's gargantuan boner notwithstanding. We were the better team in the second. But we still lack that last bit of ruthlessness. Could have won both last week at Arsenal and today and only got 1/6 points. Everton that.

The problem with the side on the pitch today was that Sigudrsson and Walcott are absolute gash, as they say on the Everton chat boards. My fanboy binky Tom Davies played very well partnered with Gomes, though, and DCL and Richy are a handful for any CBs. Old man Leighton Baines was excellent.

Carlo got his money's worth. Won't necessarily mind seeing Big Dunc on the touchline next week at Stamford Bridge. His first game as interim was the 3-1 pummelling of Chelsea at Goodison that turned Everton's season around.

This is one game for Carlo, correct?

Straight red in that situation feels like it should be a three game ban, but I have no idea. Can’t imagine what he said in such a short time that couldn’t have been served with a yellow first.

The only one that deserves some time off is the VAR official.

Am I misunderstanding the offside rule? Siggurdson is in an offside position and moves his leg to let the ball go past and into the net. So isn’t that offside?
No snark intended. Genuinely don’t get the uproar.
Say a player shoots the call into the right corner of the net and his own player is offside on the goal line and lets it go through his legs in the net. Even if the keeper is on the left side of the goal and has no chance to save it, it’s ruled offside right?

As I understand it, the offside player is only called offside if he materially interferes with the play. That could mean getting in the way of the keeper but it could also mean blocking his line of sight. The question in this instance seems to be whether he blocked De Gea's line of sight, such that he couldn't pick up the deflection.

My feeling is that De Gea wasn't getting to the ball in any case but his line of sight probably was blocked. How that should be ruled I don't know.

What does materially interfere mean? Gylfi moves his legs to let the ball pass. Doesn’t that mean he’s involved?

I don't think Gylfi moving his legs means anything (although if the ball had hit him it would have been obviously offside). The question is whether he interfered with De Gea's ability to make the play.

I think within the letter of the law he was within DeGs line of sight. What makes it a nut punch was that he was wrong footed by the deflection and NFW he was getting it.

Everton could have made it moot by convert one of their 12 second half corners. Oh well.

I've watched the replay a dozen times. Technically, Gylfi does block the line of sight momentarily as the ball passes him by. But why didn't he get up off his ass before that? Sitting on your ass in an offside position wasn't gonna help anything.

Gylfi has been terrible this season.

He still delivers a nice free kick (most of the time), but otherwise he's been a disaster. They're going to have to offload him at a steep loss.

A few years ago, I argued with just about everybody here that the offside negated by Lovren touching the ball before Kane showed what an incredible diver he is was bullshit. Here, the ball went off the human brain vacuum that is Harry Maguire. Based on that precedent, this goal has to stand.

@OilCanShotTupac, @Cellar-Door and @Schnerres -- if you're interested, here is what Union Berlin sent out to their fans after the sign yesterday during the game, that postponed the game briefly and was a "level 2" violation, spoiler in original German and Google Translate --> English.

German
Hallo candylandriots,

Hello candylandriots,
Our game against VfL Wolfsburg today saw two interruptions in the first half due to banners displayed on the forest side of the An der Alten Försterei stadium.

While the banners that led to the first interruption expressed a sharply worded criticism of the DFB's resumption of collective punishments in connection with personal verbal attacks against Hoffenheim's patron Dietmar Hopp, such an attack prompted words and pictures immediately before the break Dietmar Hopp for another break. Referee Bastian Dankert ordered both teams into the booths and continued the game only after the banners had been removed.

Against the background of the solidarity of many active fan scenes in Germany that has become clear in the last few days and the sometimes drastic reactions to it, Union President Dirk Zingler pleads for a differentiated view of the events:

"I strongly condemn the defamation of people, something like that is intolerable. The brutalization of dealing with each other in our society, which is also reflected in football matches, is extremely worrying. We all face the challenge of stopping this development. Every individual is asked to counteract it, ”Dirk Zingler positions himself fundamentally and also promotes a differentiated view in the concrete context of football.

“The form of expression of the fan protest that has been widely chosen these days and also today in our stadium is not suitable in its symbolism to promote fan concerns. Although it reaches the highest media attention, it generates a broad rejection of justified concerns by fans. Everyone involved in this form of protest would be well advised to pause and find suitable expressions for their positions. The right to freedom of expression is a valuable commodity in our society, which also includes supposed tastelessness. It can of course be used to address critical situations in football. But the inviolability of human dignity is the basis of our living together, it is important to protect it. We are all responsible for this together. "

Per the Athletic, it sounds as if Ancelotti simply refused to move away until he got an explanation. Everton are hopeful that they may have a successful appeal. If this account is true, then a red card instead of yellow seems overly harsh.

Carlo Ancelotti fronted up to the referee and refused to back down. “I’m staying here. I want an explanation!” he told Chris Kavanagh as Goodison Park bellowed in righteous fury.
Everton are hopeful they won’t have to be without Ancelotti in the dugout at Chelsea next weekend. As the players still smarted, director of football Marcel Brands was deep in conversation with club secretary David Harrison, assessing their strategy for appealing Ancelotti’s red card and subsequent touchline ban.
Everton hope the fact that the manager was not abusive or overly aggressive will go in his favour, and that simply refusing to budge will fall on the lower end of the disciplinary scale.
