2020 Rotation

Anybody see the video clip on ESPN where a teammate (Derek Dietrich, I think) explains that Trevor Bauer is intentionally telling the batter what he’s throwing? It’s on the home page now - not sure how to link to their vids.

He’s basically doing the thing pitchers do with their glove before the pitch while warming up in the ‘pen to indicate fastball, change up or breaking ball.

Many may think he’s a clown - or worse. But sign me up for adding him on his next one year deal for the 2021 rotation. The guy’s entertaining at the very least and probably better than most of what else we can throw out there - self-tipped pitches or not.

Bauer had a 5.89 ERA in 81 innings in the second half last year and is likely to cost quite a bit, good luck with that.

Fair enough. I mostly meant that, in relative terms to who else seems to be on the Sox horizon, Bauer at least has a theoretical ceiling of 1st Division starter.
If nothing else, he’d provide plenty of fodder for this board while the Sox rebuild.

Martín Pérez is three months younger than Bauer (and much cheaper) and has also shown promise at times, he was great for the first third (11 starts) of 2019. I'd take Bauer too all else being equal but I'd be looking forward to see what Bloom sees in Pérez.

Yea, Bauer needs to cool his jets. He's gotten a little to big for himself.
Bauer has a little bit of Eric Show's bizarreness in his story arc

Perez just made it through .2 of an inning -- 34 pitches -- in today's "start." Maybe he's saving his good stuff for the regular season.

So is the Yankees lineup full of right handed monsters.

Martin Perez is never going to have a season within 1.50 ERA points of Bauer’s 2018.

I need to get me an online gambling account then. I’d put the over/under at 81. They just aren’t that good. Edro is a major regress risk after career high innings; Sale hasn’t pitched a full season since he was traded. Eovaldi will not stay healthy. They have no quality at AAA, one interesting prospect at AA who hasn’t translated talent to output yet, and a little bit better depth in A ball. There’s not enough pitching; at all.

in addition to the teams you listed, I have them behind Oak, Tex, and Tor, with the White Sox nipping at their heels and the Angels held back only by their even worse pitching situation.
God, I need to learn not to procrastinate.

With Today’s Sale news my over/under goes to about 76 I don’t think that Sale is a 5 WAR pitcher, I just think all options to replace him are significant negative WAR pitchers.

Is it fair to call something totally expected and obvious a disappointment? If so, what a disappointment.

is Dombrowski subject to the Dodd Frank Act? This is the type of situation where bank regulators gave Boards of Directors the ability to retroactivtively dock the pay of executives. This has to be one of the dumbest contracts ever given out by a major league executive, and that’s saying something.

I thought he had had some success against NY but when I checked the pitcher/batter head to heads, he really is the replacement for David Price.

Martin Perez had a 3.6 ERA in 120 innings for the Rangers in 2013.

If Bauer was as cheap as Perez, I'd be intrigued, but he's only had one good season, and is generally shitty PR off the field. I'd be surprised if either pitches within 1.5 ERA points of Bauer's 2018 for the remainder of their careers.

I’m usually skeptical of people loudly declaring things like this, but I would have a lot of trouble rooting for Trevor Bauer.

I didn't love the signing at the time, it seemed like they could have waited. But this is going a bit far. They got him below what his market rate would have been if healthy, so in essence they gambled (and apparently now lost) on his arm health. There isn't some big marketplace where you can buy a Chris Sale whenever you're ready, you have to grab them when you can even if it's not a sure thing. We got lucky with Pedro where his contract came up at times when you could fairly gauge his value, which is why we had him for his seven peak years and not the next four. With Sale the decision point was either a year ago or now, and the Sox went with a year ago thinking they could save money. They couldn't have known it would be this bad, as far as we are told. Maybe the medicals were already going south, I dunno.
