Deivi probably has innings restrictions too, but once Paxton and German are back, they will have a lot of flexibility, depending as always on who is actually healthy.
Getting the rotation ready to pitch its best in October is the real goal here.
I am really appreciating the workhorse nature of Torre’s various staffs, in retrospect. Hopefully, Gerrit Cole falls in that category. Tanaka has really hung in there over his career. I think he is a really solid Yankee pitcher who just needs to win a WS to get in Cone’s neighborhood.

Cone had a great stat on today's broadcast, NY is 103-60 career in Tanaka starts. That's a good season!!

Yeah, and the kid(s) that will pitch will get to learn tremendously from both Cole and Tanaka who are more or less opposites yet effective.

Montgomery looks like a good fit at No. 4 and more than ready to do the job. Love the way he pitches and it’s always nice to see a big lefty in the Yankee rotation.

Not sure where you’re looking but his last healthy season (2017, pre-TJS), he started 29 games.

The reason people are excited about him is he may have gained velocity post-TJS as sometimes happens, he has been sitting 94 which he only touched a handful of times pre-surgery.
Oh god. I Bidened that. I was just looking at the Cubs guys because a friend and I were talking about how they'd slipped and I quoted from Mike Montgomery. My mistake.

I just like lefties, Rough. Yanks always need at least one good one. Like several other’ young Yankee pitchers, a lot will be asked of Montgomery in 2020. And Loaisigia, Schmidt and Garcia. As a fan this is fun to watch, seeing homegrown talent pushing for a job. Monty is the only one with a full season in the rotation but the upside on those other three is worth watching.

Gerrit Cole, rocketing up my list of alltime favorite Yankees before throwing a regular season pitch, has evidently taken Clarke Schmidt under his wing:

"“He thought my stuff was really good and we were talking about how with the four-seam (fastball) they were kind of ambushing a little bit and ways we can get them off of it in the season,” said Schmidt, who is ranked the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline. “He had really good takeaways and really good tips. A lot of the stuff was finger pressures on different pitches. We were talking about changeups.

“Every time I talk to him it’s very detail oriented, very methodical. Everything he has to say is so deep thought, so every time I’m talking to him, I’m learning something. And we’ve got to talk a good bit here this spring. He’s been really good to me.”"

With an unavoidable best of 3 first playoff round this season and maybe in the future, having Cole for game 1s became that much more valuable.

NY has Friday off and then Saturday is Paxton/Strasburg and Sunday is a bullpen game against Corbin, this allows them to line up Tanaka and Montgomery and Cole just how they want, via Mike Axisa's Patreon newsletter, via Boone:

  • Thursday, July 23th: Gerrit Cole at Nationals (Opening Day)
  • Friday, July 24th: off-day (Jordan Montgomery simulated game)
  • Saturday, July 25th: James Paxton at Nationals
  • Sunday, July 26th: bullpen game at Nationals
  • Monday, July 27th: J.A. Happ at Phillies
  • Tuesday, July 28th: Cole at Phillies
  • Wednesday, July 29th: Montgomery vs. Phillies (home opener)

They haven't announced this part yet, but Tanaka is pitching a simulation game Sunday, so should slate in on Friday:

Thurs, July 30: Paxton vs. Phillies
Fri, July 31: Tanaka vs. Red Sox (season debut)
Sat, Aug 1: Happ vs. Red Sox
Sun, Aug 2: Cole vs. Red Sox

If they stick with the five man rotation and don't skip anyone, that is the first of four straight starts that Cole will make against BOS and TB, four of the six total series they will play this year against those two.

Also NY needs to keep Cole and Tanaka separate so they don't have three straight lefties, you want to mix up the looks more, I think.

So let's try to think along a little bit with NY's pitching management, they have 7 games in 5 days from Wed-Sun, but four of those are only 7 innings, so 55 innings scheduled, or more like 6 full games. NY has 5 guys in the rotation currently, and if they stayed on track, we'd get:

8/5: Montgomery (4 days rest) and Happ (5 days rest)
8/6: Tanaka (4 days rest)
8/7: Paxton (5 days rest)
8/8: Cole (4 days rest) and ???
8/9: ???

It might make sense to push Paxton to one of the seven inning doubleheader games on the 8th, especially coupled with Cole. The 7th can be a bullpen game (Loaisiga, King, Nelson etc.) and the 9th I wouldn't mind seeing Clarke Schmidt up for a spot start. They have to get him on the 40 man but I think that's possible, although NY will have to make 3 other moves before then (cutting from 30 to 28 on Thursday plus Chapman coming back).
