I'm sure the kid is talented.

But the juxtaposition of the dog just sitting at the computer and picking some random school no one ever heard of is just perfect

Per Wikipedia, famous graduates of Lenoir Rhyne include former PC hoops coach Rick Barnes, NYG DC Perry Fewell, comic Tom Segura, and Virginia Dare Aderholdt, who decrypted the Japanese surrender message on 8/14/45.

Yeah, Dugger is a small school prospect, but he had a pretty much universal 2nd round grade. Question was whether they could trade back into the 40s for him

NFL.com's pre-draft analysis:

Overview
It's rare to find a safety with elite size, speed, explosiveness and production at a Power 5 school and almost impossible to find one at a Division II school. Dugger crammed the stat sheet full and used those elite traits to dominate the opposition. At times, he seems bored with his level of competition, but his engagement can be instant and urgent when it needs to be. He plays with controlled violence and carries an alpha demeanor on the field. He has soft hands and is rangy, but needs to train his eyes and improve his fundamentals before he's coverage-ready. Dugger is a versatile, scheme-friendly safety who helps immediately on special teams and could develop into a talented NFL starter.

Strengths
  • Looked like a man among boys on tape
  • All the athletic gifts under the tree have his name on them
  • Rare combination of size, speed and explosiveness
  • Production galore in high-impact categories
  • Plays with instant twitch to pursue tackles or break on throws
  • Swoops down to snatch telegraphed passes
  • Bodies up to contest downfield throws
  • Can be vengeful striker or controlled, wrap-up tackler
  • Clear understanding of leverage in pursuit
  • Range for high safety and toughness to play in the box
  • Speed and angles to run the alley and derail or contain outside runs
  • Posted six career punt return touchdowns
Weaknesses
  • Must prove production carries over against better competition
  • Looked bored at times with idle motor from back-side
  • Inconsistent rush to fill downhill
  • Bound a little tightly in his hips
  • More reactive than instinctive
  • Needs to improve footwork fundamentals
  • Eyes get hung up on receivers over diagnosing QB's intentions

Overall grade: 6.34 - will be starter within two seasons

FWIW, McKinney's pre-draft grade by NFL.com was 6.38, so Dugger is right there. So even though *I* have never heard of him or his school, the scouting reports are all that this kid is the real deal.

So ok. Makes me happier.

As a Bills fan, I can tell you that Dugger was the target of a lot of the Bills' beat writers for their pick at 54, ideally to play "big nickel" in McDermott's scheme. I'm sure Belichick will make good use of him as a versatile defensive weapon.

I guess I just don't get why he goes secondary (the strength of the current team) with the first pick when there are so many other holes (seemingly).
Safety is probably going to be a pretty big hole in a year or two, they probably aren't competing this year anyway, so if Bill thinks he can replace Dmac or Chung and also be a potentially elite punt returner, why not.

Can never get enough of people burying players they never heard of because he isn’t on Mel’s Best Available.

The mucky muck
Per Wikipedia, famous graduates of Lenoir Rhyne include former PC hoops coach Rick Barnes, NYG DC Perry Fewell, comic Tom Segura, and Virginia Dare Aderholdt, who decrypted the Japanese surrender message on 8/14/45.
Perry (aka Pewwy) Fewell was also really good in Jane’s Addiction, says Elmer Fudd.

That makes sense. I keep forgetting the Pats probably aren't competing. I am so used to the last 20 years.

I didn't think they'd take a jumbo safety but really wanted them to. Athletic enough to spy Lamar, Josh Allen, and those dudes. But they'll need a plan for him, not unlike Jamie Collins. Let him do the 2 or 3 things he does best, instead of being Mr. Versatile. Major upside. Definitely some downside. But a fun pick. I'm here for it.

I get that. I guess in BB we Trust.
The Patriots aren't drafting for 2020 is the thing to remember, they're probably not a SuperBowl contender unless Stidham is AMAZING, and they have basically nobody under contract after 2021. Brady is gone, a lot of the core is aging out. This draft is about getting the guys you want to be the core from 2021-2024.

PFF:

Kyle Dugger is your classic late bloomer. According to Orlando Ledbetter of the “Atlanta Journal Constitution,” Dugger arrived at Georgia’s Whitewater High School at 5-foot-6 as a freshman but grew to 6-foot-1 by his senior year. He also didn’t start at the varsity level until his senior year at Whitewater. He received zero Division I offers coming out of high school as a result and opted for North Carolina’s Lenoir-Rhyne over some other Division II offers.
Positives
  • Supremely explosive athlete. Probably the best pure burst at S in the class.
  • Unafraid to play fast. Trusts his angles and attacks.
  • Big-time hitter. Not going to be the one going backwards on contact.
  • Excellent length for the position with 32 3/4-inch arms. Big tackle radius.
Negatives
  • Might as well have been high school tape with the competition level at Lenoir-Rhyne.
  • Didn’t have to do too much true reading in coverage. Got away with just reacting.
Round Projection
Second Round
NFL Comparison
Keanu Neal
Bottom Line
He’s a massive unknown at this point, but he has a high-floor with his explosiveness and how well he tackles. At the very least he’s a special teamer for a long while in the league.

ESPN's pre-draft analysis of the kid:

"Dugger has an excellent blend of speed, length, size and hand span. He covers a lot of ground and has the tools to match up with tight ends in coverage. He's a playmaker who picked off 10 passes and returned six punts for touchdowns in college. He's a good tackler with great stopping power. -- Steve Muench"
Having backs that can cover tight ends seems pretty important in today’s NFL, no?
