deep inside Guido territory
It's rare to find a safety with elite size, speed, explosiveness and production at a Power 5 school and almost impossible to find one at a Division II school. Dugger crammed the stat sheet full and used those elite traits to dominate the opposition. At times, he seems bored with his level of competition, but his engagement can be instant and urgent when it needs to be. He plays with controlled violence and carries an alpha demeanor on the field. He has soft hands and is rangy, but needs to train his eyes and improve his fundamentals before he's coverage-ready. Dugger is a versatile, scheme-friendly safety who helps immediately on special teams and could develop into a talented NFL starter.

Cross posting from the game thread. Bob McGinn had him as the #2 safety in the draft behind McKinney.

Honestly, they’re just trolling the fanbase at this point, right?
They are tanking this season, and will get a top 10 QB in next years' draft. I'm convinced of it. They looked at next year's schedule, figured they couldn't even go 10-6 with Brady, so it was time to blow it up, and I'm good with it. The schedule, the schedule, the schedule. It's insanely brutal.

Write it down, bet of the century, Pats under 8.5 wins this year (assuming there is a season). I don't think they can win 6-7 games on that schedule.

no one has ever heard of this guy and, of all the holes on the roster, this was not at the top of the list.
So in that sense, the pick makes a lot of sense

This ain’t about headlines. Sebastian Vollmer was a 25 YO German expat, too, until he became a borderline Pro Bowl RT.
Way to go back 11yrs.. NE has become the OAK of the draft where we reach for players you hope other teams do.

Since 2011, the Patriots have drafted a league-high SEVEN(!) defensive backs in round 2: DB Kyle Dagger (37th overall) DB JoeJuan Williams (45th) DB Duke Dawson (56th) DB Cyrus Jones (60th) DB Jordan Richards (64th) DB Tavon Wilson (48th) DB Ras-I Dowling (33rd)

I was about to complain about the whining in this thread, but that's a rough litany there.

Tavon Richards
This is NOT a Tavon Wilson or Jordan Richards. From what I've heard and seen, the guy was a solid second round pick on all draft books. This isn't an example of the Pats trying to get cute and WTF-ing us. He was the subject a ton of buzz in the lead up to the combine. I'd like to have addressed a different position, but it's not a bad or random pick.

So they're tanking the season by picking shitty guys in the draft? That seems like a stretch. I don't think BB would ever "tank," but if he did that doesn't mean they'll intentionally take bad players.

I don’t believe Belichick has a tanking bone in his body but even if true there’s no reason to blow 2nd round picks.

edit: I know shit about the draft and am not saying this is a blown pick, I’m saying with all the picks they’ve accumulated and the needs they have screwing up picks to tank makes absolutely zero sense.

Safety actually is a position of need given that their starters there are really long in the tooth.

With that receiving corps and those tight ends, the 30 year old Brady would struggle to beat the over with that schedule. Next year they’ll take their lumps, develop Stidham and this year’s draftees, pick up Justin Fields in the ‘21 draft, and then get back to their winning ways.

Fields, due to the lack of a college season, will get a year to watch the Patriots go 11-6 under Stidham before the ‘22 draft where they’ll finish the restocking process after trading Stidham for a package of draft picks.

No, I don't think he's taking bad players. I kind of like the pick, but I don't see him as an immediate producer this season. He's a raw, untested kid, who will spend a year learning the ropes, then they dump salary, and hopefully he makes the leap in year 2-3.

I also don't think they make more than 1-2 more picks tonight, and start stockpiling picks for next year. We'll see. I made a bunch of money when they traded out of #23 last night, with some friends convinced that BB would do everything he can to keep them competitive this season.

BB does "what's best for the team" without fail. Going 7-9 is not what's best for the team this season. 3-13 is. He won't blow games or sign shitty players, but this is all about future planning now, much moreso than it's been at any point in the last 20 years.

It’s not a matter of “blowing a second round pick”. They picked a guy with a ton of upside that will shore up special teams now. Their current safeties are hitting their mid 30s, they need long-term replacements.

I don't know much about him but Chung went seriously downhill as last year wore on (definitely partly injury related) and I don't mind looking for his replacement one year ahead of time. More generally, I think the defense just needs more athleticism in the middle of the field and it sounds like this kid is a pretty freakish athlete.

This should age well.
I’ve never said anything remotely like this. I’m maybe the biggest BB / Pats homer I know. Flip side is I have said I am probably done with the NFL when BB/TB retire. I turned off the draft last night before the first pick was announced. This during a sports starved time in our world. So yeah there’s a pretty decent chance I’m done

That and they often take home run swings in the 2nd round. Sometimes it works out, and you get a Jimmy G or a Jamie Collins. Sometimes it doesn't, and you end up with Tavon Wilson or Aaron Dobson.

If a guy with Dugger's athleticism had played at a big school and played well, there's no way he's still on the board at pick 37. You don't get the opportunity to draft a guy with his kind of athletic profile in the early 2nd round unless there's some kind of issue(s) there. In this case, it's where he played and the level of competition.

Pats figure they can bring him into their program and coach him up. They can't teach athleticism, but they can teach him football. He'll probably just play mostly on special teams this year, hopefully he can contribute on defense in 2021.

I've said it before but DBs are like starting pitchers, you can never have enough good ones.

Seriously, this is the epitome of Felgerism. 14 months removed from winning a SB and here we are for like the 20th time. Every year we go through this. Such spoiled and entitled fans ready to pretend announce they're abandoning the Patriots after every draft. Bye. I don't look forward to celebrating the next SB win with you when you inevitably return. Ugh.

The pick or the quote?
Duke Dawson and Cyrus the Virus didn't age all that well. Don't think Bill and Nick deserve the benefit of the doubt anymore strictly when it comes to the draft. Coaching up a C to a B no one better but drafting a c hasn't been a strength for several years.

This strikes me more as a Jamie Collins than Tavon Wilson. Although the casual fan may say “who?”, many draft pundits had him as a second round pick. This was not a massive I am smarter than you reach. Belichick probably saw a type of athlete he never gets a chance to draft. As has been mentioned, if he was coming from Alabama, he would be a high first rounder.

As with any pick, only time will tell.

The quote about quitting his fandom over a 2nd round draft pick.

I'm with you. I was asking this question of someone who equated this pick with Tavon Wilson and Jordan Richards. It's not. It's a good pick. I'm not even sure Chung makes the 53 at this point. I'd think, if not, it's gotta be close to Chung's last season in NE.

Chung and DMAC are going to be 33. Slowly work him into the rotation and use him to return kicks instead of Edelman/Sanu. Adding him to Jones/Jackson/Joejuan for the future will keep the secondary strong after Chung/DMAC/Gilmore move on.

I was going to reply to that, and then you hit it on the nail. So tired of these weak minded fans who constantly threaten to be "done" when the last 20 years have been absolutely gluttonous in terms of winning.

And annoyed to see a lot of the people who have hated the Patriots for so long were right about the fans.

Kyle Dugger is interesting, certainly a position of need -- maybe not the most glaring, but I'd rather they go best available on their board anyway.

Based on OTHER DRAFT BOARDS. They like this guy. He may or may not work out, but they like him and the player went around the area most draft sites claimed he would. This isn't Tavon Wilson out of the blue. FTR, I can't believe how bummed you are, either.

Fun fact--I received a recruiting letter from them a looooooooong time ago for baseball.

Bill’s more of a downer guy.
The dog parties though!

I like the TE eliminating possibility. I feel like that’s been a weakness for the team for a long time with exceptions here and there, and we need an answer for Kelce if we ever want to come out of the AFC.
