Ferguson is not a human being.

Why does it seem like Justin is the one fading and Tony has him where he wants him?

Ferg eats shots every fight. Not a great match.

This loss will ruin Feruson / Khabib yet again...
I mean, he’s got all that range on him and he’s fighting like the shorter guy. It’s super dumb. I thought he was maybe setting Gaethje up, but clearly not.

ESPNUFC should just put the fight on Sunday Nights on ABC and sell crazy ads. Wonder if they would make more than PPV

Really happy for Gaethje. Sucks that we don't get Tony khabib, but Justin deserves it.

Not sure if the violence would work on abc.

What a great night of fights. I mean I’m pretty die hard about the sport anyway but they hit a home run and it’s fun to see a few friends who weren’t into it talk about it.

Gaethje was so impressive. Honestly after his first three fights in the UFC I thought he was overhyped but he’s proved me wrong.

Wow. I haven’t seen a ton of Gaethje or Khabib, but can the latter take the former’s punches and is his submission game that much better?

Tony didn't go for takedowns. Khabib will take Gaethje down. Edit: but to answer you question, no Khabib can't take Gaethes power. That's something maybe only Tony can do and Khabib has been wobbled by far less

Cejudo is such a clown. At his press conference last night he went on an on about his heartfelt reasons for retiring, but then would throw in quips about Dana knowing his number or adding an extra zero.

I know some of the cringe thing is an act, but damn he's annoying. Talented, but annoying.

I don't know how much of a draw he is, but his 'legends' tour nonsense is meh. I hope Yan smashes him when he comes back.

Two Three other observations:

1) Ferguson was like a machine last night. But it was kind of like an older model Terminator facing off against an upgraded, newer one. So durable. So much damage.

I'm happy for JG though.

2) I may have said this after his previous fight, but I'd love to see Bryce Mitchell grapple with Ryan Hall. I'm guessing Hall would handle him, but I didn't expect Mitchell to look nearly so good against Rosa on the ground. I don't know shit about BJJ/grappling, but I was impressed with his body awareness and how smooth he seemed to be transitioning from different potions and sub attempts against someone who I think is a legit BJJ black belt. The fight was a mauling, but still fun to watch. Maybe even better without a crowd.

3) Seeing what Phragle just posted, I'm surprised that Cruz went there. Maybe the stoppage was debatable, but Peterson has always seemed solid. Low class move.

HAHA, things that really happened last night: I told my wife that ref looked like he fell off a barstool in Fall River and walked into the Octagon.

On Gaethje, gun to my head I think Khabib can win 3 rounds but if I was betting I think the value is the other way.

Khabib single leg is good but it’s not a who’s who of D1 wrasslas on his resume.

On a Cruz, these guys are so emotional that you have to have thick skin if you’re going to ref. Most bjj gyms are like a dramedy telenovela.

Mitchell was slick and it was surprising how Rosa kept falling for the same trap. I wondered if they rolled against each other every day for a week what would happen. Rosa was not ready for the arm triangle /twister set up.

I’m still baffled by Tony’s strategy. Did he address it anywhere? He had a what - 6”? - reach advantage and was constantly getting caught by lead hooks because he did nothing all fight with his range.

I get that maybe his plan was to eat shots until Gaethje tired, but when that wasn’t happening after 3 he barely adjusted besides trying that Seahawks tackle roll thingy I forget the name of.

Unless it's true. I hope this doesn't go away. He either needs to apologize or they need to overhaul reffing and judging

I can't say I really watch the refs much. I didn't notice anything at all.

You see a lot of shitty performances after a previous fight was cancelled. They have 6-8 week camps designed to peak on one specific day and from what I understand pushing that day back two weeks is just impossible. The worst I can recall is Tim Kennedy's fight against Kelvin Gastelum. He was scheduled to fight Rashad Evans once, rescheduled to two weeks later, then again but against Gastelum again two weeks later. He had about half of a good round in him, and he's a guy that made Yoel Romero quit.

A lot of people have brought that up as well as Tony's camp expecting a grappler but fighting a striker

I suppose that makes sense, but Tony is super experienced and there was plenty of time to try to implement a strategy like “use your range.”

Super annoying personality. God, I hope this is all some stupid ploy to milk more money from the UFC and it completely backfires. Normally, I'm not on the side of billionaires, but I'll make an exception here.

I wonder if we would have heard that exchange if the crowd was there.

Edit: That sounds callous in a one-liner - that wasn't my first thought when I saw the video.

When Smith told his corner that his teeth were falling out, they should have thrown in the towel right then and there. To be honest I felt Ferguson shouldn't have been sent out for the 4th round the other night either.

I know that fighters say they want to go out on their shield, but look of the list of fighters who eat unnecessary shots from people and are never the same again.

I don't know if there are scientific studies about this but I think everyone has a level with which they can take a punch, but as you take more and more, that level gets depleted.

I enjoyed the lack of crowd noise and getting to hear the corners and fighters. Obviously, they’ll let the crowds back ASAP, but it’s cooler than I thought without them.

Yeah, I wish NFL would go this route because it would be fascinating. Unfortunately, they're talking about pumping in crowd noise. I kind of get it. Sports without cheering is weird. But so is fake crowd noise.

Yeah, Tony at the end of round 5 was actually scary to watch. I'd rather see someone get knocked out with a clean punch then see someone apparently experiencing brain damage in real time.

And even though it was only the 3rd round, I don't see any reason for Smith to go back out there when all he was capable of doing was falling to the ground and covering up in an effort to stay alive. This will directly impact not only his quality of life but also his ability to earn a paycheck for a while.

I have it 2-1 Barboza but I could see a UFC judge mess up the rd 2 scoring

Edit: there you go, judges didnt realize Barboza fucked him up so bad with a body shot that Ige had to pull guard

That kid Baeza could be around for a while. I really liked his resilience against an aging killer like the Immortal.

I felt bad for Barbosa. Thought he won. Also thought he could be really good down a weight class. Another setback for a great fighter.

I was surprised that Rheem wasn't that much older than Harris. 3 years or so? He's been around forever.

Yeah I was looking through his record last night. Dude was knocked out by Liddell in 2003! He’s taken a ton of brutal knock outs over his career. I’m impressed he recovered after Harris’s initial onslaught, especially coming off that big KO from Rozenstruik last fight. In fact, wasn’t that where he got his whole upper lip torn open?

Rheem really is amazing. Think about how much the sport has evolved over 20 years, and that he is still semi-competitive.

No senior circuit over at Bellator for Rheem.

Pretty cool and (I think) speaks to his diverse skillset, and how gifted an athlete he is.

Yeah, if you want to know who the best MMA heavyweights of the last 20 years are, you can basically just look at his resume. Amazing not only that he could last so long fighting so many big fights, but adapt to all those different styles as you note and the evolution of the sport.

Here is the card for May 30th:

Featherweight: Chris Gutierrez vs. Vince Morales
Bantamweight: Louis Smolka vs. Casey Kenney
Flyweight: Tim Elliott vs. Brandon Royval
Light Heavyweight: Jamahal Hill vs. Klidson Abreu
Catchweight (150 pounds): Billy Quarantillo vs. Spike Carlyle
Flyweight: Katlyn Chookagian vs. Antonina Shevchenko
Strawweight: Mackenzie Dern vs. Hannah Cifers
Lightweight: Brok Weaver vs. Roosevelt Roberts
Welterweight: Kevin Holland vs. Daniel Rodriguez
Heavyweight: Blagoy Ivanov vs. Augusto Sakai
Welterweight: Tyron Woodley vs. Gilbert Burns

Even for a "Fight Night" card, it seems like thin gruel. I'm not much of a Woodley fan, but I 'll still be interested to see what Burns does with him. I like watching Elliott, and I guess seeing Holland get back after it so soon could be cool. Not much is catching my attention beyond that.

What am I missing? Any of these bouts stand out to you guys?

Why aren’t they tapping more of the high ranking women fighters? I know Rose backed out after family tragedy, but where’s Holly or Nunes or the good Shevchenko or Joanna or de Randamie?

Nunes is scheduled to fight Felicia Spencer on June 6th. Not sure about others.

Foreign fighters are probably less likely to travel if they can afford to stay our a while. I think Joanna could probably use more time off in particular. She should be healed by now, but maybe a some kind of training reset would be good for her.

  • 250 is the worst card in history and is only 2 weeks away
  • UFC has added a few Conor Mcgregor fights to their youtube page
Two maybe unrelated thoughts

Some of the recent cards that looked weak turned out excellent, and c-list fighters can obviously still put on great fights, but I wonder if they’re not diluting their product a bit by throwing so much meh against the wall. People may tune it out of boredom and this this is the best UFC has to offer or represents a typical MMA card.

Though I suppose people who haven’t seen the UFC by now probably weren’t going to become customers.

It was funny right well before the whole lockdown happened the Father in Law was up from Florida and I was watching some UFC Fight Night to pass the night away. He walked in and was like this isn't boxing, what is this? Took him down through a small Fight pass rabbit hole.

Until the shutdown of most sports they had I think one of the fight nights on at his community club in Florida.

But he said he's tuned into all the free shows on ESPN since then. I'm sure if they had marketed right with UFC249 there was a whole section of the public that have no real grasp of it just through which circles they run. Then again he said no way he would pay $60+ for 249 but would have watched it if it was on at the club.

So maybe you're right in the end anyways.

WTF. I loved the huntington beach bad boy circa 1999 but he cant box. If it is MMA he will brutalize Tyson. This is ridiculous.
