Dear Twitter: It's not the Sentinels. .... I don't know what it is; I do know it won't be that. Have a good day.

Well so much for that lol.

I think the timing on this is....

a) let's get far enough ahead of this so we can seem "culturally sensitive" AND we can pre-empt what they may have suspected re the Snyder article

but now

b) let's slow it down enough that it doesnt look incredibly stupid that they arent going all out to make a global change before the season begins.

Who was that guy during DeflateGate who ALWAYS had inside information and it was literally always wrong and usually the opposite of what he said? This is a little like that, but on a smaller, cozier scale. I appreciate you giving it a shot.

I'd like to think that they'll at least go with generic "Washington" or something if they can't decide on the final branding / designs / production in time.

Just for context Edmonton is in Alberta, a province that would go overwhelmingly Trump if they could, so this mildly surprising. Add the premier of Alberta makes Brian Kemp look urbane and thughtful along with the Eskimoes having won the most titles, and it surprising. I have heard rumors they like the idea of "Edmonton Footbal Club" like a soccer team. Who knows this is the ZCF where for a while it was an 8 team league with two teams with the same names.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/football/cfl/edmontons-cfl-team-dropping-use-name-eskimos/The Edmonton Eskimos are no longer in the CFL.

The franchise announced Tuesday it’s discontinuing the Eskimos name. It follows a similar decision by the NFL’s Washington team as pressure mounts on teams to eliminate racist or stereotypical names.

Not the Inuits? Seems natural, works well, sounds good and shows sensitivity.
I guess I’ve missed if this question has been asked, but if Washington went with something like First Nation of Washington and kept the same logo? Indigenous Peoples won’t work. A local tribe like the Chippewa or Rappahonnocks? Too far gone for them? Disingenuous? I like the idea of these name changes honoring the people they offended rather than completely cutting all ties, but I guess you’ll still gets the yahoos in headdress and shit. Except Cleveland. I want the Spiders back.

I think the Edmonton CFL organization recognized that the dominos are falling - and that no matter their internal thoughts they'd have to change the name sooner or later, and now is as good a time as ever, probably better. Knowing that the eyes of the sports world would soon be upon their city in a unique way probably helped accelerate the decision, too.

And I think you are over-exaggerating the Albertan sentiment these days. Trump would most certainly not overwhelmingly win the whole province...and Edmonton actually leans a bit to the left, as hubs of government and education often do. As we are forced further away from the boom and bust of the dead dinosaur economy, I think Alberta will continue to trend away from its hype-conservatism of the past.

Kenney's a moron, though...

I wonder whether Snyder's going to be forced to sell the team, and the league will let the new owner choose Sentinels the name.

Washington Football Team isn't bad. Probably good that they don't rush the process.

I like player numbers on the helmets instead of a logo.

The helmet could be pure white with black letters in sans serif font that say "WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM".

Yeah, maybe they'll change their minds and do that instead.

From the article linked above:

Washington will not have any change to its color scheme. It will still use burgundy and gold. The logo on the helmet will be replaced by the player's number in gold. The Washington Football Team will debut its home uniforms in Week 1 against the Eagles, and its road uniforms in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.

They'll probably just get called Washington in every reference ... but references to "The Football Team began their first drive ..." or "The Football Team goes on the road ..." in type or over the air will be awkward at best

Who will be the first play-by-play/commentator to mistakenly refer to them by their old name?
This reminds me of the time that Howard Cosell used a derogatory term (but I'm sure without ill intent) on MNF when speaking about Washington player Art Monk.

You guys are more charitable than I am. My first thought was that it’s a passive-aggressive act of protest... “Fine, you guys think the name is racist? I’ll change it to something so bland and literal that no one could find it offensive. Take that, Cancel Culture!”

I think the WTFs works well.
