Didn't Payton force that by flipping out on Tito in the dugout during a game?
Correct, I remember that scene picked up by NESN or Fox (can't remember what day of the week it was). Point being he was just a hardass on a professional level. I would find these co-workers easier to deal with and silo in my work life than someone who is disrespecting who I am or what I am on a personal level. Note the word "disrespecting" not "disagreeing". If someone thinks the protests are a bit overboard and generally has right wing views that's their right to their opinion, but mocking Doc's speech is clearly DISRESPECT.

Of course I haven't seen whatever it is that Brasier retweeted, and last night I kept wondering how on earth anyone could think anything about Rivers' impassioned remarks could be funny. I would never click on the thing, if I knew where it was, but what was the gist of the parody? Or is parody too nice a word for it? (Edit: I see now that @BroodsSexton has seen it. Can you give the general outline of what it is?)
It’s two Black guys railing about how black people complain about life in America too much and spouting a bunch of false, racist, right wing propaganda. It’s like Diamond & Silk with a couple Black bros.

The trade deadline is Monday, can they just suspend him, try and throw him in a deal (to get something for their baseball asset) and cut him the minute the deadline passes on Monday if they can't? Who cares about optics, he didn't.

Right, I agree with you, just making sure my recollection of the dugout incident was correct. Sorry for not being more clear.

I disliked David Price ever since he and his then girlfriend used social media to dump on David Ortiz. You can believe it or not, but my dislike of him had zero to do with race, and I think you're pushing it.
I don’t read chawson as saying everyone who was critical of Price was critical because he was black, but I don’t think his point, which resonates with me, is pushing it just because it doesn’t track with any one person’s reasons for criticism.

Some players are judged more harshly than others. Sometimes things reach a critical mass where it is easier to feel certain ways about players where we might give others a pass. No matter how progressive any one of us thinks we are, and whatever we think our motivations are, it is definitely worth thinking about whether there was racism involved in the critical mass that developed over David Price.

Not saying there wasn't, but it also should be factored in that he was maybe the worst Sox pitcher against the Yankees in my lifetime.

He isn't a good enough pitcher to put up with the effect his behavior has on teammates.

I am not seeing a JBJ statement about what a great teammate he is, etc.

As stated above it was bad enough, but it was mocking a guy who won a title in Boston, on Jackie Robinson day.

I mean a guy as good as 2004 Schilling, try to repair things, but this guy?

Possibly. I am just saying it is important to understand how racism sometimes tends to work.

To take this out of the race area and to get away from a polarizing player, I’ll relate it to a situation at work. I work with a woman who provokes strong reactions in colleagues. I frequently hear things said about her that are cast negatively when similar attributes are celebrated in male colleagues. It is pernicious and once you see it you really can not stop seeing it.

She also can be an asshole. But she gets way less leeway for it. I have little doubt that when she does an assholish thing even the most self-described progressive among us think that is why we respond the way we do and feel about her the way we do. But this is how workplace misogyny works. We all need to be on guard.

If they’re going to spew garbage on social media? Abso-fucking-lutely.

And let’s be clear. This happens in every business, every industry for every employee. The idea that holding a professional athlete accountable when they spew racist garbage is somehow a “purity test” is an utter fabrication.
Exactly.

Brasier is welcome to believe whatever he likes. He's welcome to say whatever racist shit he likes, and when he does, the red sox fan base and management are welcome to hold his ass accountable.

Thank you. It would probably involve a lot of stupidity, but I wonder if Brasier thought two black men speaking made it not racist.

Is there any indication that the front office is aware of the fan-base reaction?

Unless they are quickly trying to trade him for a bag of balls I am extremely disappointed in the Red Sox. Where is the response?

Who knows whether there is locker room discussion or friction that needs to be resolved privately. What if they were working on a JBJ trade? One can imagine all sorts of reasons they might need to walk on eggshells for 24-48 hours.

Or they are hoping it will blow over, which would be disappointing.

I'm totally sick and tired of racism in all it's forms so yeah I have no problem believing a guy from Texas who is OK mocking a black coach pouring his heart out about racism might be somewhat of a racist. Just because the guy has black team mates he can certainly still be a racist. He didn't make the video but he promoted it so screw him. He just dropped down a bunch of notches on my list as a person.
This is where I'm at. These days everyone is so triggered and charged up that you really can't be doing stuff like this. I don't even like Glenn Rivers and his words moved me.

I don't know what to do with the guy. If I were Red Sox management, I'd sit down with him and have a discussion about it. Talk about the power they have with social media, hear him out and hope that after that talk he would be inclined to make a statement about it.

Unless they are quickly trying to trade him for a bag of balls I am extremely disappointed in the Red Sox. Where is the response?
We arguably have the most tone deaf management in MLB. I'm not surprised they are again slow to the punch.

The most shocking part about all of this (in my mind, anyway) is that a Boston sports media outlet still employs Jon Tomase.

Man I hate agreeing with Shaughnessy. By the way, this quote from Pillar is almost as bad as Braiser’s re-tweet.

Participating in a Zoom news conference, Pillar said, “It was not an easy decision for a lot of us . . . We all have different beliefs. We don’t agree on everything . . . I don’t think right now, as a country, we should be necessarily identifying individual groups of people that need to be uplifted . . . ’'
Yeah God forbid we lift anyone up when they might need it, because of we lift up black people that means we are not lifting up white people and we always have to be mindful of white people’s feelings whenever anyone but them get singled out. It amazes me that people like this can see and hear the emotional response people of color have to something like the Jacob Blake shooting and think to themselves, “you know, at this moment what’s most important is to not uplift black people or single them out.”

I have to admit to not paying much attention to the Sox this year (or any other sport, seems so trivial to me) so I’m not totally sure who Pillar is but he can fuck off too.

That Pillar quote, for fuck’s sake. Just shut up.

Is our team unusually conservative? Or is this par for the course in MLB? I didn’t know what to make of almost nobody kneeling at the opener and now I am viewing it differently. I also can’t help but think back of that White House visit and start to wonder if the Mookie thing was about more than money.

It is easier to do this in a crappy season. But I am unsubscribing from the Sox, until they demonstrate values of fairness, kindness and honor.

Screw them.

This is rich coming from a man who spent years on this site defending the actions of a serial rapist.

Your intellectual dishonesty knows no bounds.
Whether you want to skewer the messenger or not, the message is, sadly, fairly accurate. When Lowe and Varitek were both accused of domestic violence, we didn't entirely turn a blind eye to it, but IIRC there was little discussion, and nobody wanted them thrown off the team.

That was a generation ago, and many of us have grown up quite a bit (along with society) on those things. But it's not wrong to say we were poor on those events.

I have always liked him. Get rid of him, soon! How can we express this to the Red Sox? ( I don't do Twitter, fb, etc.)
Why don't you use any social media? It's the easiest way to reach relatives and far away friends not only the easiest way to reach the Red Sox organization. I guess you can do it the old fashioned way and write a sternly worded letter or a phone call etc..

Pillar can go fuck himself too. If these are the kind of shitbags the Sox front office and ownership want to employ fuck them too.

Here's Pillar's statement trying to walk back his bullshit:

Sox PR department is spinning like crazy. They need to clean house.

I think you're missing the distinction several of us have made between him holding a belief, or expressing it privately, vs expressing it very publicly in an attention-grabbing manner, as he did.

People are saying get rid of him because of the latter. We rooted for Trot Nixon and Mike Timlin because they only ever did the former, plus a little giving glory to Jesus in a postgame interview. We had pretty strong indicators of what their politics likely were, but nobody got on their case. Of course, their beliefs never drove them to mock a fellow local hero for expressing the pain he'd been through in the form of discrimination, either. Regardless, what Brasier did is very different than any of the other numerous conservative men who have played for our team.
Maybe a minor point but at the time even the most feverant of Democratic supporters would say that President Bush had class and did not inspire(rightly so) the hatred that Trump does. I mean i did not vote for him, but President Bush was and is a decent person compared to Trump. Bush did not mock disabled reporters or encourage rioting among his supporters. So Timlin's and Nixon's support of Bush did not draw the scrutiny it would today.

I put this on facebook

"I don't demand ideological conformity--I really don't--but I do demand basic decency--which is why I would seldom boost anything by Dan Shaughnessy--yet here we are.

It pains me to say this because I love the Red Sox, but after finally appearing to get up to an acceptable norm on race over a 25 years span from Mo Vaughn to Mookie Betts, they've been sprinting backwards.

Yeah, not everyone's going to agree on policy, and that's okay. But the idea that you have a teammate or teammates in real pain from world events and you say "I don’t think right now, as a country, we should be necessarily identifying individual groups of people that need to be uplifted" as Kevin Pillar did, is evidence not only/even of bigotry and ignorance, but of a profound indifference to the suffering of others.

It's as if a player responded to veterans day at the park by saying "a lot of those guys are baby killers." It's just cruel.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but in a league full of conservative white guys, teams across the league have managed to show solidarity with their minority players. An awful lot of white guys on the Dodgers, Giants, Orioles and on and on took a knee on opening day. Not so much on the Sox.
I am so, so disappointed."

I don't even think Brasier expressing support of president Trump would've gotten this strong a reaction. I bet he could've gotten away with that, even today. It's the cruel way he mocked Doc Rivers' pain, and the ignoring, even gainsaying of the current protest movement, that seems to have really struck the nerve here.

I thought Ron Roenicke said it well a day or two ago

Last year with Mookie (Betts) and David (Price), they were probably more vocal than Jackie.... He’s a pretty quiet guy. And a lot’s been placed on him. And that’s important to all of us. It’s important to these players realizing that Jackie is our lone Black player on the team and they want to support him in any way they can. ... What we did today is basically telling him, ‘Jackie, we’re hearing what you’re saying. We’re hearing what the rest of the guys are saying and we want to make a difference. We want to support you in any way we can and we’ll continue to do that.’ I hope this doesn’t stop with just one game in what we’re doing.

Source
And now JBJ gets to answer questions about his two shithead teammates and inevitably piss off someone, no matter how (or if) he chooses to answer — which is a terrible spot even for a guy who likes talking to the press, which JBJ plainly does not. A good teammate wouldn’t put JBJ in that position. Brasier and Pillar both suck.

It is just baseball and all, but it is maybe noteworthy that the lack of common humanity among us, the right wing brain rot and racist norming now is so severe that your contrasting example was a team with Curt Schilling on it.

What blows me away about this is the absolute lack of empathy and the fact that it marks a sense community that Brazier identifies with and finds comity within. The Red Sox can probably absorb the half hour of bigots complaining about submitting to "cancel culture" and just move on.
Regarding Schilling, I think he did not show his true colors until after his playing career was over.. i mean sure he campaigned for Bush but so did a bunch of other guys on the team. I mean Ed Wade came out with his famous quote about Curt but that could have been said about alot of competitive players. If 2020 Curt was on the 2004 team, I guarantee he would not be accepted.

Completely agreed with a lot of you here.

For the first time in my entire life I’m contemplating whether I can in good faith watch the Red Sox game tonight. This organization is deeply and painfully disappointing me this week.

Of course you are right about writing a letter, but the world seems to move too fast for that. I like email, and I should find out the right address for the Sox front office. As for facebook, et al, there is too much loss of privacy for me, and I communicate rapidly via phone and email with family and friends.

Fuck Ryan Brasier. Fuck Kevin Pillar (this isn't the 1st time he's made asshole comments). Cut or trade them both. Hopefully JDM is gone too (stop kissing your covid fingers, you dumbass).

I was fine watching a shitty season and enjoying ABs for Arauz, Xander, Devers, Verdugo, but I don't even want to watch this team if Brasier & Pillar are on it. It feels like Yawkey 2.0.

I forgot the exact date but didn't Pillar get in trouble while on the Blue Jay's for calling the opposing pitcher the "f" word? I thought the Blue Jays or baseball suspended him for a few games. So he of all people should definitely know better.
On another point, the Yankees are the only team I think not to protest or strike for a game. That is a bad look as well. They should have protested today's game. I mean Friday night was Jackie Robinson Night and Sunday is a doubleheader so today would have been perfect to protest.

What bugs me is that a NYTimes writer mentioned on CNN or msnbc that her piece in the Times criticizing the Sox for not stopping their game in Pittsburgh after the NBA made its decision got a lot of positive feedback. Huh? Talk about bias. (I searched the Times, but couldn't find her piece, as I didn't remember her name.)

This isn’t good lurking. Provide supporting details or don’t post.
You don't have to do much research. The supporting details are available in Tomase's piece which is available in the first post in this thread. The last thing in the world, as a newbie here, I intended to do was piss anyone off or offend anyone. I foolishly assumed that anyone posting on this thread would have gone to the enormous trouble of reading all of the posts from the beginning. Thanks for the friendly welcome to the board.

Please don't take it personally - emotions are understandably high right now.

That said, I too was wondering what you were referring to and I had skimmed Tomase's piece. It might have been helpful to include the quote from the article or simply saying "per what Tomase wrote..."

Unless I am misunderstanding what the article references those other instances were relatively benign imo. Given the content and timing, Braisers retweet was orders of magnitude worse but I understand that others may feel differently.
