We all knew this was going to be a tough game but that was close. McD went to the well just one too many times.

I tell you what though, Patriots are a good football team. I feel almost as encouraged as if they had pulled this out of the hat.

Tough to put a goat label after this on anyone but mine goes to the secondary. Just allowed way too many bombs, even if it's to Wilson.

HM goat to the DL. They had to put some pressure on Wilson but they didn't do that nor stop the Seattle run game.

P. S. T&P to James White and his family.

i think the best u can do is 12-4 but 11-5 or 10-6 is more likely u are neck and neck with Pitt buff for 3rd in the AFC running cam this much will make him hurt by Nov and let say u are a 12 win team with cam 9 without the goat is McD

Goat I am voting McDaniels and the secondary. I thought they should have thrown the last play going in because Seattle was for sure selling out for the QB sneak.

That being said, I liked what I saw from the offense. Cam threw it really well. Really disappointed in the secondary though.

That was one of the worst performances by a Belichick defense in a long time. Seattle did whatever they wanted to in the air or on the ground. It was a game where it was hard to tell what the gameplan was because nothing was working: they didn't stop the run, they didn't keep Wilson in the pocket, they didn't prevent big plays, they didn't generate any pass rush.

The run blocking was awful as well. 25 carries for 67 yards. 14 carries for 20 yards among the RBs. Bullyball's gonna be a lot harder than it looked last week.

Quietly, special teams was also pretty bad. Missed FG, bad KR returns, allowed a couple pretty big returns.

McDaniels
Special Teams (seems like they're conceding 5 or 10 yards on almost every kickoff and runback)
Defensive front (they couldn't pressure or contain or stop a nosebleed)

I'm pumped about this season now though!

McDaniels had an awful night.
Defense got shredded.
Nick Folk sucks. That missed FG would have been nice to have at the 2 at the end of the game.
McDaniels had an awful night? They scored 30 and passed for 400 yards. I can't imagine what a decent night would look like.

Gilmore got toyed with. Michel had 7 carries for 19 yards. Let's start with them.

Edit: fixed Michel's stats, which were somehow actually worse...

Defense. In particular, they pretty much failed to set the edge all night.
Special Teams lost us yards on poor reads on KR.
Ja'Whaun Bentley looked slow as hell.

I'm not mad about the two absolute dimes Wilson threw.

Feels kind of weird to have a goat thread this week - did the defense even play that badly? Statistically they did obviously and their slowness is still a major weakness (it’s not going to pretty going up against KC in 2 weeks) but I don’t feel like they played at “2018 Super Bowl” levels of bad or anything.

Gilmore hasn't looked great through two games, but tonight's match up was hard. Metcalf is a beast.

I'm wondering how much linebacker play is going to affect the secondary this year. A big part of Gilmore's game last year was jumping routes and trusting safety help. I couldn't tell (and I've had a couple) tonight, but I wonder if the safeties have to cheat and not drop back a little to threaten the opposing run game.

His 3rd down play calling was terrible tonight, and he spent most of the second half having Cam throw short. Once they allowed him to throw deep they did much better, but by that point it wasn’t enough. Josh has these games were he gets too cute and tonight was one of them. Last play call wasn’t great either but that was mostly Seattle winning the line battle.

He wasn’t the only goat but he was a big part of it.

helluva game though.

Of course they're going to sell out for the run against the jumbo formation. The problem is whether they can stop it.

But the last 2 times they were inside the 5 yard line...
  • 3rd and 1 from the 3, jumbo formation Cam runs to the goal line, almost gets in
  • 1st and goal (next play), jumbo formation play action pass for the TD
  • 2 point conversion attempt, they go with 3 WR, 1 RB- Cam tries to run but gets blown up (failed attempt)
  • 1st and goal from the 2, jumbo formation Cam runs it to the left side into the end zone almost untouched for a TD
I'd be livid if they DIDN'T try the jumbo formation. They were killing it with it right up until they weren't. I mean if they'd tried some wacky roll out or gadget play and gotten it blown up when Seattle had proven themselves incapable of stopping the jumbo Cam run... THAT would have been the real play calling disaster.

I guess McDaniels? He got too conservative at certain points, (settling for that long FG early, the 2nd and 2 and 3rd and 2 calls.

Honestly we played a game that came down to 1 yard against one of the NFC favorites, it was about as good as a loss can be.

I don’t see how the front seven isn’t at the very top of this list given how they got gashed on the ground and barely got a pressure on Russ.

Special teams has to be right behind it. Missed FG and they gave up a lot of net yards in the return game, on both sides.

McDaniels is a terrible nomination. I mean, Cam could be a GOAT with the pick he threw, too, along with 15 other players who made notably bad plays. I guess it’s you could have 15 Goats? Where’s the line? The coordinators may as well be labeled goats in every loss because their fingerprints are over everything.

Anyways, McDaniels called some questionable plays (my biggest problems were the Burkhead plays to the perimeter on two third downs), but they smartly adjusted by scrapping any pretense of interior conventional running when it wasn’t successful for a half.

No game goats for me in a game that looked like a stone cold loss coming in and they almost won, but if I were picking anyone it would be on the defensive side of the ball.

Don’t understand the McDaniels hate. What were your scoring expectations going into the game? To end the game, he called a high-percentage play.

The secondary got murdered.

That possession where Josh seemed to not want Cam to try and abuse the weakened Seattle secondary earns him a nod. [BTW, offense only scored 23 points vs. Seattle.]

The defense's failure to set a good edge until very late earns another.

Special teams not helping the cause either.

Kick and punt coverage has slipped from last year. They need to improve.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy that we're blaming the offense when they just put up 30 and their best skill position player is a 34 yr old slot receiver. I love the guy, but still.

I don't think "too cute" was the issue. When I think of "cute," I think of running trickeration when the bread-and-butter stuff is working. If anything tonight, they stayed too conservative, sticking with the run way past the point of usefulness and not trusting the pass O even in obvious passing downs.

They were calling short passes and behind the line passes until down 12 in the serving half. The little RPO with Burkhead was awful.

he took far too long to have Cam throw downfield. Jamal Adams night make a lot of tackles but he can’t cover for shit, took too long to throw at him.

The offense put up 23, the defense put up 7. I’m not complaining, I expected a thrashing, so I’m happy with a game that they had a chance to win on the final play. As for the goat, I’m going with the secondary.

Did I just watch Cam throw for 397 yards with basically the same receivers Brady had last year? I thought the defense seemed a step behind everything Seattle was doing.

Even on a lot of the plays where the D got "shredded" the ball was dropped into the perfect position on a perfect throw.

A lot of this is insufferable whining.

This was a fantastic game. Tip of the cap to Seattle. Try and get them next time.

I honestly don't get the Folk hate.... he does what he can do well. He never misses XPs and he converts FGs up to 49 yards at a high rate. He's not good past 50.... they know that, and they picked him over other kickers who are available who are better from past 50, but not as reliable on XPs and inside the 40. It's what Bill signed up for, and when he tries to push the edges of Folk's range, well... that's on him not Folk.

I'm not a football guy but if you go back and look at the last play, Cam had the easy bounce out to the left pylon. He could've walked in. He has at times waited to see how the blocking unfolds but didn't in this case. The entire left side of the defense was hemmed in and pancaked. Anyway, not a football guy so not sure if he could ab lib there or what.

Real good game and definitely reason to be optimistic about the Pats this year. That said, linebacker and TE are killing us. I also wonder how much losing Danny Shelton will hurt this year - we don't seem to have a real big-ass run stuffer. Oh yeah, one more thing: when do we start to see the "good with the ball after the catch" part of N'Keal Harry's scouting report?

I thought McDanels called a very nice game and the defense got torched, but by the best QB in the game with some big weapons.

Sony Michel sucks, though. His knees look shot. Also not a fan of Philips at LB, esp when you have a Dime package. It’s just too small a lineup.

I hope we never see Michel again once Harris is back. He is just absolutely useless out there. Zero threat of a big play.

Another thing to keep in mind to anyone bashing Mcdaniels tonight. Who knows how much of the game plan went out the window today when they found out White wouldn't be playing.

After this game, I feel like you have to be very happy with the offense (I mean in terms of firepower, not commenting on the playcalling here) and very worried about the defense.

Not as much for me. Russell owns one of the 3 best passer ratings against NE. Physical matchups aren't Gilmore's best suit.

I think we'll do okay moving forward, although perhaps not a top 3 unit.

I'm expecting losses against Kansas & Baltimore but wins against Hopkins-less Texans, Raiders, 49ers, one of Rams/Chargers, one of 2 vs Bills, both vs Jets, Broncos (at home), and (Tua-led?) Dolphins. I'm on the fence vs Cards but that's a home game too.

I expected the defense to get shredded last night not because they stink, but because Wilson is that good. He was my pick for MVP this year. Some of those throws were incredible.
It’s mahomes and Wilson as the number 1 and 2 QBs in the league. I’m not shocked with how Wilson did. He does that on many teams. To me they really need to find a kicker ASAP.

I think maybe Phillips blew the coverage on the wide open dig route TD? Phillips should have had better coverage on the Carson TD, though it was a tough throw to defend he was out of position. Onwenu lost pretty badly on the last play. I'm not sure he was the only one to miss a block there, however.

Overall it was a good game against a good team. I think BB can get this group into a respectable team by the end of the season. Maybe not the best in the league, but they will have a puncher's chance.

Goat is off the line LB for me. Bentley in particular. They looked slow.

Edit: hopefully Uche gets healthy and gets an opportunity at some point
