Dakota called in yesterday and announced he is giving away $10K to a Twitter follower if the Celtics come back to beat the Heat in the series.

Felger: “Why do you call into talk radio if you have money like that to give away?”

Best line Felger has ever had, and I didn't even hear it first hand. This nitwit celebrity callers now think they're insta-famous too? Maybe they are, the internet is a terrible place.

He or one of the others followed up with a line "I guess you CAN be a loser and rich, too."

I was fortunate to make one of my very few work trips in my old commuter car with no Sirius, and get some funny sports talk banter and not just "fire Stevens" talk or some other crazy reaction I was expecting.

Lessons I've learned from Felger & Mazz over the last couple of days:

* Screw the fact that they're 1 yard away from being 3-0, this Patriots team only has success because the other team throws up all over itself.
* Sony Michel still sucks and blows
* The Patriots will be under .500 by the mid point of the season
* A 16 point victory against a 2-0 team is meaningless. Nothing counts until they actually play someone (which is probably around 2-3 teams in the entire league)
* Getting to game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals does not count as "competing for a championship".

Patriots must be the luckiest team in sports history when 95% of the time in their games it's the other team that's "throwing up all over itself" and not them doing it. Almost like maybe they're better coached and doing something that makes the other team screw up.

Mazz stopped keeping up with the game about a decade ago, despite hosting The Baseball Reporters. He has shown himself to be too lazy to invest the time to incorporate anything contemporary about how players are developed, evaluated, or assessed. Not to mention roster construction and baseball economics.

It's not a matter of preference with him; it's ignorance. In short, he's a dipshit.

Felger for 2 hours yesterday: "Brian Hoyer will not be the reason you lose this game tonight!"

Felger today: "Holy crap, Stidham can't beat that clown! Harry Schmedlap would've been better!"

one really annoying thing i find w/ felger is when he does that mocking the callers OHHH WAHHHH GRAHHHH EWWWWWWW voice when callers/ emailers complain about his takes. it's just supreme trolling.
his entire show is literal crying about whoever is the current flavor of not good enough

Felger says Patriots fans are frauds because apparently all Pats fans are saying the league is screwing the team. Haven't heard one fan who is saying the league is screwing the team. Says we'd be all over other teams for this.

I think they did get screwed by what happened this week, but I don't think it had anything to do with the league being out to get the Patriots. No team should have to test at 6am, fly halfway across the country, play a night game that very same day, and fly back again.

I haven’t read or heard a single Pats fan say the league screwed them, as in they looked to disadvantage the Patriots.

One of his biggest straw men yet.

"BUT YOU ALL SAY OOOHHHH IT'S SO UNFAIR!!!! YOU'RE ALL SO PATHETIC!!"

almost felt like calling in for the first time ever just to ask what his f'ing problem is with these invented straw men, but figured that's a bit of the reaction they want so that'd be letting them win.
just turned it off instead.

I turned it on today because I thought it might be interesting between the game and Dak. I'm not going to make it 20 min. This opening segment is brutal trolling as you said. I'm going to find something on Netflix to put in on the background.

I'm just curious; according to the show hosts, how are the Patriots to blame for this scheduling mess?

Ore more to the point, how are they a fraudulent organization?

I listened briefly today for the troll du jour and I heard two developing troll themes (I may have gotten these wrong-as I couldn't listed to the idocy) .

On the Pats scheduling Felger speculated that BB told his upset players to complain to the NFLPA about their concerns about safety etc and threaten a possible work stoppage. Felger continued that BB would rather play next week with Cam and Gilmore than today without them.

Celts-generally mocking Celts fans on the Lakers 17th banner, and making fun of NBA competitive balance of the Russell years, which he knows nothing about.

I was almost annoyed enough to call on that issue.

I turned them off instead.

Turning them off sounds like a solid move.

The two of them act like doing a radio show is some sort of work release prison deal they signed up for; they hate doing it, but have no choice.

Felger loves to get a rise out of Boston sports fans, he's not from here, so he constantly shits on Boston sports fans.

Always a good idea to ridicule your base.

I don't think they hate doing it. I think they love trolling the fans and they make no apologies about it. For whatever reason, that kind of radio in the Boston market sells given their ratings.

I think deep down they're surprised it is still working after all these years.

Felger said after awhile he hated talking about Deflategate but had to because it drove ratings and calls. He said they're go back and check the ratings and compare it with show notes and ratings were *always* up during Deflategate segments.

So he openly admitted to hating it but said he had to because it drove ratings. How much of this is true, of course, we do not know

I'm a man, I'm 40 (thank you Mike Gundy circa 2007) so my memory isn't as good as it used to be. However, it was around that time I tried to stick it out, but I distinctly remember Fleger saying in real time and at the time that the ratings went WAY up when they focused on it. I remember it because he used to actually talk hockey a reasonable amount, and he promised he would when they started the darn show (unlike those guys across the street he said)....so I was increasingly annoyed his was abandoning Bruins talk.

I also check in now and then to hope he isn't talking Pats (only now he seems to LOVE basketball which he also used to ignore)...I am clearly annoyed here...but, my longer point is....I have no doubt he goes with what drives the ratings. He likes his paycheck and his house on Nantucket. Moreover, if I were him, it would bore me to talk about something constantly, so there's another argument in favor of the idea he looks at the ratings.

As for me, I caved into XM and now enjoy NHL Network Radio which occasionally flipping over to see what they are discussing.

Given Brady's big win over good team on national TV, the egg the Pats laid versus Denver, and the beating Flipper and Miss put on Brady last week, and the general disdain they've shown for Brady this year, the opening tomorrow might be fun.

That is the F&M playbook. Talk all week about how bad every Patriots opponent sucks so that if the Patriots win it’s because the competition loses, and if the Patriots lose, they are in real trouble. It sets it up so that they can be negative either way.

I'm not sure how many hot takes they'll go with

Felger: Timelord has a better sense of time than Cam does in the pocket.

Mazz- He suuuuuuucks,

Felger-The O-line looked like no-line

Mazz-They suuuuuuck

Felger: Bill should have had the players threaten to strike this week, but he was so cocky that they could play in his sleep and still beat the Broncos

Mazz=They suuuuuck

Felger-Tampa's D carried Brady yesterday

Mazz-He's old and suuuucks

Felger-If Rodgers had Brady's D he'd have won 7 superbowls

Mazz-maybe 8 Mike, he's that great.

Felger: What yesterday felt like is a coach in decline. A coach who has lost his fastball. That’s what yesterday looked like. That’s what would be saying if that were a player.

If that's what he actually said, then he's a bigger idiot than I thought. He's also someone who, despite the adulation sometimes thrown his way, has never had a fastball of his own.

Sounds like something he'd say as his agenda is to get a rise out of people..............he and Mazz have been anti Patriots/Brady/Belichick/Kraft for years, so why change now.

The whole contrarian angle, it plays well for the two of them.

If someone calls upset at their angle, Felger always comes back with "We're not pom pom waivers, you need to call this station between 10-2, that's who you need to talk to"..........meanwhile Zolak nearly had a stroke during their show opening yesterday going off about that performance on Sunday.

Any chance the Jets would swap their first for him? That'd be so Jets-like.

Seriously, they have to take anyone's first for him if they can get it.

Speaking of taking things for what they’re worth...
its a tweet from NBC Sports Boston with a video of Felger from today’s show.
Long story short, Felger was at a cocktail party this summer and someone was talking about how the Sox met Mookie Betts’ contract demands and he turned them down. Felger asked why the Sox wouldn’t put that out there since everyone has been hammering them for being cheap. The response was that the team felt the PR hit was better if people thought they were cheap vs. Mookie straight up turning them down and not wanting to be here.

Maybe someone braver than me can report from the front lines (I'm not listening), but right when I saw the story about Belichick saying they had no cap space, I got PTSD to Felger's "cap is crap" statement he repeats every damn week. I'm surprised no one has already posted a run-down, but perhaps everyone is numb to it at this point!

“I thought the good, smart teams could rebuild from the middle and still have a representative product like the Steelers and Ravens do. I thought that was you. Another poster has pointed this out here elsewhere, but in response to his Steelers/Ravens comment;

Keep in mind that NE is often compared to teams like Baltimore and Pittsburgh, who consistently win. But over this 19-year dynasty...

- NE finished with fewer than 10 wins only once, in 2002 in Brady's "sophomore" year as a starter. Even then they went 9-7 and tied for first in the division (losing out on like a 3rd tier tiebreaker).

- Only twice did NE miss the playoffs (2002 and 2008, when they went 11-5, tied for first in the division, and again lost out on tiebreakers).

- Pittsburgh has had records of 6-10, 8-8 (4x), and 9-7. They missed the playoffs 7 times over this span.

- Baltimore has had records of 5-11 (2x), 6-10, 7-9, 8-8 (2x), and 9-7 (3x). They missed the playoffs 8 times over this span.

So these other great franchises have all had multiple down seasons where they got to have a bit of a reset. New England hasn't had that, like, at all, during their dynasty.

The Ravens also have Jackson as their QB and the Steelers have had Roethlisberger since 2004; we'll see what happens to the Steelers once he retires.

Haha was just about to post similar to to @54thMA

But to pick apart the actual point of getting a high draft pick for drafting a QB, let's see how the Steelers got Roethlisberger. By finishing 6-10 in 2003 and using the 11th pick in the subsequent draft on him. Maybe not your definition of cratering unless you are the Pats, but a fair comparison for where we'll likely finish in the draft order this year...

Murray also keeps referring to Alex Cora as Cheatin' Alex Cora during every one of the updates. So we know how that'll go over if Cora is brought back.
