In this instance, I'm not sure it matters. They aren't getting the ball twice. If they were down 9, the game was over. If they were down 8, at least they have one more chance for the onside kick.

They should go for 2, you're going to onside either way, and now you know what you need. Also, if you make it you have to option to go for the win in regulation.

If they had time outs, yes. Otherwise, they weren't getting the ball twice. If they needed 9 and they knew it, it wouldn't have mattered because the clock would have run out. I know what the analytics say, going for 2 gives you a slight edge, (slight being the operative word) but in this instance, kicking the XP was defensible.
