The roster is far from complete. Projecting number tonight a month before the preseason is rather silly
I agree to an extent, but also it's not just numbers, it's how many young players do you want in the rotation, and how many can you reasonably develop.
I expect some current rostered players are gone, but I don't think we're going into next season with 6-8 players in their first 2 years out of the 15.

Haven't we done that for awhile now? There are 17 roster spots.

Yam Madar. Looks like tiles you move around and around in Scrabble in a futile attempt to play a decent word.

Don't deny it was a mediocre draft, but that was largely because the top wasn''t good. the draft actually had good depth. I like the player for Memphis, very good deal for them it looks. And not saying it is a bad deal for Boston, as #30 wasn't gonna make the roster anyway
Yes, you are correct. It is a deep draft, which made it fun. And with the knowledge that Boston has to clear out roster spot and that the 30th pick would likely make a minimal impact on the 2020-21 roster I think this the best that we could hope for. Great was an overstatement.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to share that Payton Pritchard dribbling video with my 9-year-old son.

I'm not counting the 2 ways. Last year we had: Langford, Grant, Carsen, and Time Lord. I expect at least 2 of those back (TL graduates, Carsen on the edge), plus our 2 1sts. If we take someone at 30 that's 5 of the 15 spots, AND that assumes we don't keep any of: Carsen, Edwards, Tremont, Tacko. That's a lot of spots used on projects for a team with title aspirations

I get they need a stash, and who knows? I like the idea of Tillie at 47---sure, he probably breaks down but if not you have a useful guy. That is a better risk going foward than the last guy on the roster now, imo.

Madar looks reasonably athletic in games, but the scouting reports I've read suggest he isn't. Must be the level of competition creating the illusion of his athleticism.

Clearing the talent bar for NBA guard is pretty tough. The average NBA guard is ludicrously talented.

Also, wouldn't you rather roll the dice on Jay Scrubb than Madar? I think the Celtics consistently misunderstand the risk/reward on those later picks..the goal imo is to take some shots at guys who might matter. They are young and deep already. It's much better to have a guy who craps out in a year but had a theory on being useful.

Of course, I've never seen Madar play I just am not enthused by what I've read.

hopefully Madar works out better than Yabu and Ante. He was picked much lower tho.
From what little game tape I saw after Givony mentioned him a week ago his draft rights are going to be a throw in in some trade 4-5 years from now.

Yup, that sure seems like the path. It's not worth drafting a backup PG type unless you need him right now---those guys are vet min available almost all the time.

I would have preferred selecting a guy with an actual NBA skill, like Sam Merrill who probably can't defend but can spot up, step back, relocate dribble and shoot NBA 3s.

Where are they putting him?

The advantage of a guy like Madar is you get to have a good franchise that has good coaches develop him, he gets to play on his National team, and if he breaks out you bring him over if he doesn't you don't.
Someone like Scrubb.... he's going to take up one of your 2 way slots.

This is the problem with all of these suggestions... you don't have the time or the place to develop them. I'm sure a number of these level of guys will get invites to Maine as non-NBA roster players, but a 2nd round domestic pick is going to want your 2 way contracts at the least.

I think the Celtics would like Tacko to take at least 1 of the 2 ways this year.

Unless your preference was a draft and stash candidate, it was unrealistic.

I'd have no issue shipping Edwards or Waters out for a top 55 protected pick to clear some roster space. I don't have much use for guys that size. Look at how good you have to be (Kemba, Isaiah) just to give people mixed feelings about you being on the court in playoff games.

Hell, even Fall can't seem to play for more than 3 minutes at a time. Hard to imagine him turning into anything, much as he seems like a great guy.

Both first rounders tonight are better than Edwards and Waters so they might be gone. Tacko I hope is a keeper - he dominated in Maine although RIP Fab Melo did as well so no guarantee there

They're already almost definitely shipping out one of those guys because they just drafted 2 rookies. Presumably, they want some veteran help too so that's more roster spots.

It is a little disappointing to go another year without drafting a 2nd round hidden gem. Some day...

Cellar-Door is making a key point. This roster is not going to be a proving ground for up and coming NBA wannabes. Upcoming free agency is going to change the landscape much more than a draft filled with good-but-not-great players. It is more than likely that Nesmith is the only player we have mentioned tonight who has more than marginal impact next year. Many of the youngsters will be fighting for their NBA life and most will find it ain't necessarily a glamor profession.

I agree, that was my point though.. we're a young team, last year we had 4 drafted guys in the first 2 years plus the 2 ways This year we look set for at least 4 plus 2 ways, I think we all assume Edwards is getting moved, and several vets are coming in. A pick at 30 would have been hanging on to that 15th slot, and usually teams like to have flexibility there to make in-season moves. Using the pick to open up a spot and some salary, and trading it for 2 seconds in years when we might need cheap options on the bench given our salaries makes too much sense not to do it.

I stick him in the G League, of course. Was that a serious question? Who do you have in the other 2 way slot, and do you really think it's someone who on THIS roster is going to matter?

I like Tacko, but it's pretty unlikely he ever matters. I like Waters a good bit, but they have signaled pretty clearly in this draft they don't think he matters (I was pro-keeping him but after drafting two PGs it's hard to feel that way anymore). That's my point---you can shuffle guys like that in and out of your roster pretty easily. You think Javonte Green is likely to matter? I liked the shot he'd work last year, but it's not likely.

As others have said, there is little reason to think Madar is ever going to play a meaningful minute. He's only an asset if someone might want to trade for him, or if he is going to be a rotation guy. If you think he will be, great---I hope you are right. The reality of most guys at this point is they'll never make it, and a problem the Celtics and some here have is falling in love with unlikely-to-develop guys at the end of the bench or in Maine. You often know within a year, so I'd rather buy that year to assess someone, generally speaking.

I think there's two points, one good and one ill-considered.

There's little reason to draft a marginal role player for the Celtics, on that I agree.

But picking a stash who projects to be that is only a little better. You retain a little upside but then you're left with the question: which player's upside do you want to bet on?

I hope they are right on Madar, but they have generally not been good on the international guys---Theis is the best recent one and he didn't come through the draft.
