I like Adam but it didn’t work out. Marty’s kid is the only name that I have heard that I really don’t want of rumored candidates.

If they let Douglas do the hire it could be someone good. The rhymes with history would be Wink. I wouldn’t mind Pat Fitz, or Matt Campbell. Campbell rejected interview with us last time.

What is their plan when he quits the job in a year? You can’t count on Meyer to stay for a 3-4 year rebuild.
I think Jacksonville is going to hire him and relegate themselves to at least another five years of suckitude.

I think the college and pro games are way too different these days to assume success in the former will lead to success in the latter. Who is the last successful college-to-the-pros coach? Harbaugh?

I think AZ would say Kliff is a success so far, took over a 3-13 team, went 5-10 then 8-8, that's a pretty reasonable rebuild even if his in-game decisions are sometimes.... weird.

Not a ton of recent college to pro guys... Ruhle is in his first year, Marrone has been a mixed bag, got fired after a pretty solid 9-7 season in BUF, then in JAX won the South early... then as with most coaches without a QB... it fell apart.

College guys don't seem to be doing any worse than recycled guys or coordinators. They just have a nice soft landing spot waiting for them.

Campbell has zero pro experience. Is that what you want? But maybe it's a good idea since the Jets aren't pros. ;)

Hmm, making your coach shortlist without a GM... that usually works out GREAT.

The Lions are such a poorly run franchise

Never mind - the Jags are screwed regardless of who they hire:

No one wants to learn the lesson Kraft taught - don't try to be a talent evaluator as an owner.

He clarified it, seems more like he was saying that he had the GM clear contracts through him before finalization more than he was involved in evaluating talent. That's not that bad, an owner wanting to know how you're spending his money before you do it is fine. I think it was a response to some of Coughlin's tenure where he had carte blanche and made some big mistakes.

Good save on his part.

Separately, I have to think that Chargers head coaching spot is the #1 job, assuming Spanos isn't terrible to work for.

Yeah it would be great to be the HC of the Chargers. Great place to live, beautiful new stadium, and a stud young QB to work with. Doesn't get much better than that, other than that you're competing with Mahomes for the next decade-plus.

It's tough being the second team in a city where they didn't give a rat's ass about having no team at all and the move made no sense other than for financial reasons.

Well, it's not as though they haven't been working on the GM front

Detroit Lions: The Lions have already interviewed seven scouting types for their GM job (Rick Smith, Louis Riddick, Scott Pioli, Thomas Dimitroff and internal candidates Rob Lohman, Lance Newmark and Kyle O’Brien) and ex-Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis for their coaching job, and are going to move forward aggressively this week on both fronts. Interim coach Darrell Bevell will interview, and Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy and 49ers DC Robert Saleh will be requested this week, as will Fontenot and Holmes. The Lions plan to hire a scouting type on the GM side and a leader-of-men type on the coaching side, with four people—owner Sheila Ford, president Rod Wood, VP Mike Disner, and advisor Chris Spielman—running the interviews.

Two years in a row that Flores has flushed out the OC after one year.
I speculated on this in the Miami thread, but O’Shea is whatever. Gailey was brought out of retirement to get the most out of Ryan Fitzpatrick this season. To win the max amount of games with Fitz as possible in 2020 and help develop Tua and get him ready. You aren’t bringing a dude out of retirement thinking 3-4 years down the road.

I think Gailey very clearly called plays and ran the offense to suit Fitz, but didn’t do enough to play to Tua’s strengths and put the rookie QB in an advantageous situation.

Also when Gailey was hired, Tua wasn’t on the roster, and there was no guarantee Tua was going to be on the roster. Now Miami rides with Tua and wants a coordinator to maximize his ability, not Fitz’s.

I am listening to Evan and Carton while waiting to pick up my kids and Carton is doing a victory lap about a “shock jock” scooping the beat writers about Gase being fired directly after the game is really funny. This guy is a radio talent.

Cross posted in Michigan thread; story about delaying extension of Jets show interest do t know how good it is sourced.

I would imagine Harbaugh being interested would correlate to the Jets moving on from Sam Darnold and Harbaugh taking his QB of choice, which I would assume is Fields since he’s pretty familiar with him.

Always thought Harbaugh might be a candidate because of brother connection with Douglas. I’m fine with it. Michigan fans think he sucks, idk.

I think he kind of sucks too. Well, maybe I should say, Harbaugh the GM/recruiter sucks. He seemed fine when someone else was getting the groceries. He lost the power struggle in San Fran and hasn’t built anything of note at Michigan.

Maybe if he’s resigned to strictly coaching and grooming a QB, he can be good.

Here, alphabetically, are the six openings. I suppose there's an outside chance that Nagy is added once the Bears are one-and-done, or Jerry Jones gets pissed or there's a surprise retirement, or Fagio is let go by the new Broncos GM, but for now this is it.

How do you rank them them in terms of great situation for coaches who might have a choice?

Chargers
Falcons
Jaguars
Jets
Lions
Texans

Chargers have to be #1, I think - all set at QB, lots of decent talent, not the toughest division (KC notwithstanding). After that, I could be persuaded by virtually any ranking, although my heart says the Falcons are #2, with much better talent than their 2020 record indicates *and* a very easy-looking schedule in 2021 (AFC East + NFC East + DET + SF, with JAX the 17th game opponent if there is one) *and* no obvious organizational dysfunction *and* the 4th overall draft pick. The Jags suck but have Lawrence coming; the Texans have Watson but no 1st round pick; the Lions are all over the place; the Jets are the Jets.

It's a QB league, so I'd go:

Texans - Watson is a great building block even though they're F'd in this draft
Chargers - Herbert looks good
Falcons - Ryan has a few years left, and this team played better than their record
Jets - if you don't believe Darnold is fixable you've got your QB at #2 in the draft
Jaguars - start the build with Lawrence
Lions - Stafford is near the end but could be an interesting trade chip

Given your logic, why not Jags over Jets. NY media is poison.

I believe Jets can get their cap # over $90M but haven’t made the moves yet.
