I had a good amount of cards that I had been purchasing the last few years off Ebay but was having trouble keeping it all organized so I started consolidating my collection and upgrading some of them along the way so that I only keep my favorites and have room to display them. One of the cards I'm targeting next is a 1975 Topps Luis Tiant. I love the look of this card.

I go with graded cards unless they are modern autograph one's. The PSA 9's for this card seem reasonably priced, not sure what a 10 goes for though.

Weather has delayed my 2021 Topps Hobby Box, not sure when I'm getting it now. Dumb winter storm.
I picked one up for $125 at a local shop yesterday. The hit was an Ozzie Albies jersey relic. Also got a throwback Ortiz, a whole bunch of the base rookie set, a Bohm 35 year anniversary version, Eduardo Escobar /70, and Leody Taveras silver refractor

Nice. I went with a Jumbo Hobby, so will get an auto and 2 relics. Hoping for good hits, but already got the /199 Bohm so might have tapped out my 2021 Topps luck.

Roger came today!
I like Beckett's cases a lot more than PSA. I'm going to yank my PSA 6 Tony Gwynn out of the case and put in a one-touch, but I think I'm going to keep this Roger like this.

Man I LOVE that '85 Donruss look. '87 is rad as well, both of them being those cool black borders of course. I remember saving up cash back in '88-89 and buying a box of 87 Donruss, I think it was around $35 or something. Thought I was a king! My buddy's dad still has an unopened 87 Fleer box (those awesome baby blue borders!) that he's held on to all these years, prolly not worth a whole lot more than what he paid for it back then haha.

Watched this last night on Tubi.
Really good watch. It's about a childhood actor whose dad opened the first card shop in Toronto in 88 and cards were part of his life until the card market busted in the 90's and his dad disappeared from his family. He goes home to clear out his collection of cards out of his mom's place and thinks he can make a ton of money off it and quickly finds out the stuff he held onto for 25 years is worthless.

Leads to him trying to find out what happened to the card industry, and what happened to his dad.

I’d kill to be able to open a card shop. My forever dream job that will never, ever, happen.
I've considered opening a combination card shop/board game shop up here. It's about a 45 minute drive to the nearest of either of those from us, which is juuust a little too close for comfort right now. Maybe in a year or 2 when I'm completely out of debt.

There are no card shops working 45 minutes of me but just the thought of renting space, somehow acquiring enough inventory etc is just too daunting

Agreed, and scary. Being retired military it's pretty easy for me to get a small business loan to get started, which is nice, but I'd really like to be totally debt free before I do it so that if we had a bad month or whatever, it would be covered by my retirement pay. It's definitely a huge commitment.

Yes very scary, and I don’t have the benefit of having served and any retirement income coming in. Most likely if I were ever going to open anything it’d be to open a pastry shop for/with my wife. At least I know she’d qualify as a female owner for a loan, and she’s a tremendous baker. And if the business failed miserably I could eat away my sorrows.

There’s a card shop about 15 from me. It’s moving to a bigger location. I’ve been there twice. The first one was just me there and it was sad, second time I went (to get more one touch) it was at capacity. Didn’t realize it was Topps release day. Just packed to the gills. Was wild.

I need to go back and get more one touch.

Bought a sealed 2020 set and opened it. In the foil board pack this was in there - #’d to 264

It seems like there's a lot of these cards (not that in particular - just the good rookies).

Do they do 700-800 player card set runs like they did in the 90's, or do they just do a select amount of players?

Throw in some 86 Topps and this was the time period of my true peak childhood collecting. Nostalgia right into my veins. It feels like I can even remember pulling some of these cards out of packs!

Opened up one of the sealed 89 UD sets I have. A shame the hair has those white spots otherwise the card is pretty great.

I have a pile of cards from the 1985-95 era (Topps, Donruss, Score, Fleer, Upper Deck...). My general understanding is most of them are basically valueless since about a bajillion gazillion were printed. Is there much risk in skimming through them and getting rid of the ones that are a) in less than stellar condition, and/or b) for common to bad players? I don't think the world is ever going to be looking for a bunch of Score '92 Luis Sojo cards. Seriously, I know I've got 3-4 of those. They're not exactly hurting anyone sitting on a shelf but holding onto them for another three decades seems a bit silly.

There's a charity called "Commons For Kids" that takes in common cards and, well, donates them to kids -- at shelters, underfunded schools, community centers, etc.

Info here: https://commons4kids.org

[If I just caused that other goddamned jingle to get stuck in your head, I apologize.]

Seems like Pokémon and Basketball cards are the popular ones. I just want to look at what they have.

Stupid shit.

I would just say read the room. It was a very nice crowd of people.

That was a waste of 50 bucks. Bought 2 Mega Boxes of Topps Chrome Update and 1 pack (that had 3 packs and a pink refractor pack) of Chrome Update as well.

Got a few Luis Robert rookie cards but that's about it. Got a Ryan Mountcastle from the 2021 Topps pack I bought. But overall...I'm going to stick to the Ebay singles route.

Man I love seeing the Hitdog in there. Time was he carried this franchise. That Devers card is awesome looking too. Real old school look. I don't collect anymore but I might go fishing for that one online.

Fwiw, we have had two card / memorabilia stores open in my city within the past few months so you dreamers definitely aren’t alone.

That Mo Vaughn is a beauty

When I was teaching preschool one year, one of the fathers donated a few boxes of commons. It was great as some kids got excited about getting cards, and I could say, "if I gave you 3 more, how many would you have?"

Would you know if there's one of these in CT/RI/MA/NH?

Would love to get involved but shipping commons doesn't make much sense to me. It seems they are in KY

According to their website it’s $20 to ship up to 5,000 cards in a certain USPS box.

Things that have turned me off from collecting in the last 20-ish years

A. Grading and the costs and time delay
B. Tertiary grading (non-PSA/Beckett) companies
C. Reprints
D. Parallel sets rather than inserts that are identifiable.
E. Topps/Bowman monopoly
F. 35th year anniversary looks (I know most people like this, I don't)
G. TOO MANY sets and its corollary not being able to find cards/sets in Becketts, increased use of star/semi-star and not listing individual players
H. Inflation of monthly Beckett costs and supplies (I could be wrong on latter's existence)
Probably a couple more that I'm momentarily forgetting.
Stuff like this turns me off:

Yeah, of all the stupid insert set ideas, this one may take the cake for sure. I can only imagine how many people will sell these to unsuspecting people on eBay for WAY more than they should ever go for.
