Who knows where to put this thread, but I'm curious if anyone here is collecting NBA Top Shot. I am not, it's so popular at the moment that it won't even let me make an account. I feel like there's been mention of this in other card collecting threads (as a curiosity that probably most of us here don't understand) but it seems to be extremely popular. I guess I get how a crypto-card digital "moment" collection is perfect for a generation that broadcasts themselves on the internet as a norm.

What's NBA Top Shot?

https://www.nbatopshot.com/infographic
The above seems to explain some of it, but in summary, it seems to be digital card collecting, where the "cards" you get are video highlights of a particular player. They are called moments. Like physical cards, there are common, rare, and extremely rare cards to pull. "Packs" that you buy contain a few cards and can cost anywhere from $9 to hundreds of dollars for the pack (at retail price). Then their own marketplace allows you to buy and sell the moments, with a few already selling for hundreds of thousands. Since this is crypto-collecting, sort of a currency combined with basketball, there is extremely high demand at the moment. See this article from The Athletic just this morning:

https://theathletic.com/2415597/2021/02/27/nba-top-shot-surprise-pack-drop/
"On Friday, after a 24-hour technical problem delay, the company reported that 220,000-plus people had lined up in a digital queue for a chance at 10,631 “Premium” packs priced at $99 that included six NBA-licensed video highlight cards (or moments). That’s the largest number of people to seek packs since the public beta testing began in October."

Anyway, that's the phenomenon that's happening right now. Anyone collecting moments? Or anyone's kids collecting moments?

Here's a random "unboxing" video for reference:

I'm not "collecting" but I'm trying to get some because it seems like getting a pack is almost guaranteed profit right now because the market is so crazy. Just signed up a few days ago so didn't get any yet.

If anyone does already have an account you can get a guaranteed preorder on a $9 pack today if you get in the virtual line and wait however long it takes for them to process thousands of payments. Normally you have to join a lottery for a limited spot in line to get a pack.

It says the line is paused for me. Is it the same for everyone or did I do something wrong? Also, do you know if I can refresh the page or will I lose my place in line?

Yeah it's paused for everyone, this seems like a dumpster fire, they processed like 5k people in 10-15 minutes and now it's paused "while purchases go through" (what were those 5k people they processed doing if not having their payments processed?).

And I think once you're in line you can't refresh or you'll lose your spot

"Once you’ve joined the queue, please refrain from attempting to join on another tab, browser, device or account. Please don't leave the queue screen. By exiting the page or attempting to get another place in line, you’ll forfeit your spot in line and may be locked out from rejoining the queue for several minutes."

I understand the appeal. I think of Kawhi's shot against the Sixers every so often, and then I'll search for this clip: View: https://youtu.be/_OPVgfkzmp8

I can't watch it once. If I see it, I'll probably watch it 3-5 times.
That's a great video, had never seen that.

One of the interesting things about this concept is that it already seems incredibly popular and yet there are many directions to take it:

1.Open it up to the international market
2.More interesting moments (the ones so far are cool but from what I can tell are not necessarily iconic moments like in the video quoted)
3.Older players
4.Championship wins
5.Off-court moments

How much do people eventually pay if they release limited edition archive playoff moments? Bird to DJ in 87? Jordan with The Shot in 89?

Apparently their own FAQ page is wrong, or they just changed it because now it says "If you’re in the queue and can’t watch the stream, refresh the page (your position is secured). "

Got mine about 50 minutes ago. The queue dropped super fast - about 18k in 10 minutes, and then I was in.

Not really. You need to go to Top Shots and fund a propriety wallet.

guys I’ve been holding off on this and it’s BIG NEWSfor SoSH. The same NFT folks behind Too Shots have some other properties. One of them in Garbage Pail Kids. We can all buy a licensed digital version of Crater Chris.

There is a NFT company that is not on any real exchange yet that has a deal with the NFL. I’ve been considering finding a way to get it and throwing $10k or whatever at it.

I think NFTs are kind of lame but can’t believe what some of these are being valued at.

Is it that much weirder than buying a real Rolex rather than a perfect fake?

Anyone do the latest all star drop? If you have an account already and missed it so far it's over 3 parts, 2 were today, last one is tomorrow 10am pacific, $14 pack, great chance you'll get one because if you got one today you aren't eligible tomorrow, and pretty much guaranteed market value of like 20x your purchase minimum if you get a pack

My 17 year old son got one of the $14 packs. Apparently one of them is an Embid dunk going for about $300. Should he sell it right away or hold it?
I have no idea what to expect from the market, but they're doing a "challenge" where if you collect and hold 1 of each of the all star cards then you can get a Durant or a Lebron, so it seems like those cards are probably going to go up in value at least short term because of the demand of people trying to make the whole set, so unless you really need the $300 I'd hold on to it at least for now.

I pulled a Tatum which is worth a bit less than the embiid, but really you couldn't lose with any pack and the current market, the cheapest all star is Lavine at $150.

Alarm didn't wake me this morning, so I was too far back in the queue for drop #1. I thought I was golden for drop #2 because I started at around 68,000. But it seems that the dropout rate is a lot lower than it has been in the past because the sale JUST ended right now when I was around 1,000 in line. So I guess it's attempt #3 for me tomorrow :-/

Yep, finally worked out! Got my first pack.

Maybe I'll get lucky and get in on tomorrow's Rising Stars pack too. 5:00 ET.
Yeah that's going to be nuts, $199 pack and limited quantities so the resell price will probably be through the roof. Probably something like 200k people trying for 33k packs

I managed to create an account between the outages last night, and then grabbed a single moment as required earlier today. So I believe I'm all set to try and jump in line for the drop today.

Any tips on how best to get through? Should I go with an ethernet connection to maximize speed? Hop on the site right at 4:50 ET and just hit refresh until I'm in? Do they ever open it up earlier than the "ten minutes prior" to the official drop time?

It's not like that, when you join the drop doesn't matter as long as you're in. Everyone in the drop gets a random number. It's actually open now, so just join and then check back at about 5:01

I do not understand the appeal in this at all. Buying clips that are readily available on YouTube, ESPN, etc for what exactly?

I tried to cover this to some extent in the original post, but I think if one considers the same:

What's the point of owning a baseball card that is now readily available to look at (in picture form) on the internet?

So the point, I think, is:

1.Rarity
2.Collecting
3.Showing off your collection to your friends on your phone

Yeah, but a card has a finite number of an actual tangible object produced. If I owned a 52 Mantle, I could physically hold it and show it off. Only a few people can own a physical Mantle. Anyone can have the same experience as the person who owns the video clip by going on YouTube or ESPN or wherever. There is literally nothing unique about the video.

it’s a non-fungible token. It’s actually better than a card since you can ascertain total supply. The number is finite and defined, forever inalienably stamped to the blockchain.

I guess agree to disagree. There is nothing appealing to me in owning a video clip that everyone has already seen.

I don’t want them either, but what’s really the material difference than having a baseball card that everyone has seen as well?
In this particular case I don’t like Too Shots because, while there is a defined, finite supply for each moment there isn’t anything necessarily finite about the moments themselves. If they had come out and picked only five moments per player per year that would make more sense to me.

The difference to me is that a card for example is something you can actually hold.

Or, for example, I can look at a picture of a Lamborghini but I’d far rather be the guy/girl who gets to drive one every day. It’s a totally different experience.

If you own the clip of LeBron dunking against the Celtics from the Cavs/Celtics conference finals, sure, you own it - but your experience with it is the exact same as anyone who has the internet and can watch YouTube.

I ended up squeaking out a pack because enough people ahead of me couldn't buy. Got the Rui rising star, which is probably about average, and the Gobert all star which is a bit below average, and 4/5 above average commons including a Tatum and a Brown. No way to tell the profit yet because the market is down so none of the rising stars have been posted.

Congrats. I didn't get one today. I would guess that you'll have a large profit with only 2,000 each of those rising stars.

Are you sure it doesn't matter when you join the waiting room before the drop? I know they say spots are randomly assigned, but the only time I've ever seen anyone get good numbrs is when they join immediately after the waiting room opens. It could just be a fluke, I guess. What time did you join today and what # in line were you?

I mean, they claim its totally random, and I've seen people say on twitter they got great numbers after joining minutes before, but who knows I guess.

I joined about a half hour before the drop, pretty early, and got number 32963 out of 32775 packs available or whatever the number was, so I had to wait it out until the end to see if I'd get one, there were about 300 or so left when I got mine. And yeah, expecting the Rui to be pretty valuable since it's so limited and also part of the current challenge so people will be looking to buy those 9 right away. I'll probably sell it in a few days once the market price stabalizes and I see what it's actually worth and hold the others for now.
