Hmm Broncos have $42m cap space left? I guess there is 1 possible Jimmy G destination where they wouldn't have to restructure him.
That's before Kyle Fuller + Kareem Jackson, so probably under $30m.

They've done well to patch holes in FA but I still think they need long term help at WR/DL/CB, too much to give up given roster needs elsewhere.
Eh you still have your own 2nd in 2021 and you can trade Gilmore for a pick in the 40-60 range for a long-term answer at CB or elsewhere. I think Bill could easily accumulate some extra 2nds in 22 or 23 with other trades down the line. QB is too important.

What are San Francisco's goals for next season? If they think they can be a competitive playoff team with Jimmy G, which seems unlikely if starting a rookie, then yeah, I can see them standing pat absent a tremendous offer for Jimmy.

Jimmy G probably isn't worth a big offer to other teams, so he could actually be more valuable to the 49er's. He knows the offense. Maybe he could Dilfer his way into winning one with some health and a little luck. Or maybe a lot of luck.

Classic BB move.

Trade the player you actually want to a team that will not win a Super Bowl with. Then bring him back and win multiple Super Bowls. Classic.

SF is simply trying to add some trade leverage with these leaks. There is a zero chance that Jimmy G will be with SF next year, and there is no way he would want to be there under these circumstances. He’s not Fitzy.

Maybe the Niners made this trade for Belichick, since the Dolphins weren't going to trade #3 to New England. Now the Niners trade the pick to the Pats for a similar bundle of Pats picks plus a sweetener.

/end conspiracy theory

If the #3 pick is Fields or Jones, maybe a Jimmy G trade is realistic this year.

But if it's Lance, I'd actually be surprised if the 49ers trade Jimmy this season. I read somewhere that Trey Lance has like ~20 career pass attempts while his team is trailing. Tons of potential but a very young 1 year starter at North Dakota in a run-first play action offense who never really had to experience throwing from behind when the play-action is a tougher sell is really risky for a SF team that could be going to the playoffs.

Plus you could let Jimmy regain some trade value with a good/healthy season.

Yee is shopping Jimmy, who has a no-trade clause; I don't think BB wants Jimmy in Chicago.
Not really so expensive since 49ers intend the 1sts to be #31--really seconds.

Big ifs but... assuming the Falcons intend to trade down from #4, the Pats could have the inside track now. I don't think Atlanta will want to deal with a division rival in Carolina for the #4 pick. SF already made their move. I think we can now assume Philly isn't picking a QB. Broncos remain a threat but Lock has enough potential that maybe they prefer to stick with him for another year.

Would be nice if we could just trade up to the Lions for #7 & casually grab Fields.

It's entirely possible that New England exits this draft not having done much of anything at the QB position besides maybe picking up a flier in the later rounds. Which would bum me out, but the price to trade up seems STEEP right now.

Yeah, to me the options in order I would prefer are:
1. Trade up at a reasonable price for Fields (reasonable being say 15, 96, 2022 1st, 2022 2nd at the most)
2. Draft someone in the mid-rounds (Mond, Mills, Newman etc.)
3. Trade up at the above price for Lance
4. Draft someone in the late rounds (Buechele, Book, Ehlinger etc.)
5. Draft Nobody
6. Overpay to trade up for Fields
7. Draft Jones at 15
8. Trade up for Jones

I get that I like Jones less than most, so I think most people would probably move Jones at 15 up to 4 or 5, but I just don't see it with him, and 15 should have elite talent at other position available.

Wouldn't bum me out if we end up with Jimmy at a reduced price PLUS talented players at 15 and 46 and still owning our 2022-2023 1st rounders.

Agreed. Those late-round fliers never work out.

A ninth option is if the consensus top 5 QB prospects go early to mid-1st round and they really like another QB prospect outside that group, then it'd make sense they'd trade up or down to get him before the middle rounds.

Yeah, the Niners trade is obviously not good news in terms of the likelihood of NE trading up for Fields or Lance. One of those guys is now guaranteed to be gone at #3 and that trade also sets a high benchmark - one that I'm pretty skeptical about BB ever meeting - regarding what ATL will likely be looking for if they decide to trade #4. Miami also could plausibly trade down again if the offer was good enough but might not want to do it within the division, so that makes things even harder.

I feel like the best realistic scenario for a Pats trade probably now involves the guy they want sliding to #7 and then striking a deal with the Lions. A lot of stars would have to align for that to happen.

I think this is true. And I also think SF has very little leverage in terms of trade. There are really only a small handful of teams that would consider JG at this point, and no one would give him close to the money he is making if he were a free agent. If SF is trying so hard to get out from this contract and move on, why give up anything? Him getting cut seems inevitable.

Which mid-round QB has all of the physical talent, but serious questions? Mond? I've had a hunch for a while that's where the Pats go this year.

Jamie Newman is an absolute monster physically. Questions come from processing, consistency, footwork,

the niners don’t have much of an issue with the contract. They can afford it and get out of it whenever they want at this point.

Their leverage is simply saying we keep him and he starts this season. Another team is going to have to offer value to get them off that.

Newman could be fun.

I kinda almost think Feleipe Franks could be interesting some day...

I talked myself into Desmond Ridder before realizing he stayed in college.

Ridder could be very interested for next year. He was really good in 2020; it will be interesting to see how much he improves next season.

If I am reading spotrac correctly, if Jimmy G stays in SF, he will carry a $26.4M cap hit. If they cut or trade him, it's only $2.8M, so that's a huge savings.

Conversely, if the Pats traded for him, they would be looking at a 2 year for about $52M, unless they restructured.

Well, yes, but they don't need to get under the cap. It fits in fine. So it is a 26M cap hit, but also their presumptive starting QB.

They can get the same cap savings next season if they want to cut him. Point being, they aren't desperate to get rid of him, so they can have some leverage in any possible trade scenario.

I just don't see this. There are maybe 4 or 5 teams that would consider him as an upgrade over their current situation. I don't know how "desperate" they are for anything but I know they don't see him as their QB of the future. On paper, they are a competitive team, so this trade speaks volumes--to everyone. It speaks volumes to Jimmy that, as a 29 year old, his team doesn't see him as the QB of the future. It speaks volumes to the rest of the league that a QB who made it to the Super Bowl just recently, doesn't hold a breadstick for the organization. Despite rampant speculation he'd be traded or waived, SF has spouted lies that he is still their guy. Now they go and spend a ton of assets to draft a quarterback. This is clearly a "cut your losses" move and everyone can see it.

Now let's say they keep their word and bring him back. This is not a Rodgers situation where he's pissed but there's no writing on the wall. This is the third overall pick in the draft staring down a middling starter. The writing is in all caps and red ink. It's over and everyone knows it. Things would get ugly real fast.

I don’t really understand your point and how it relates to this offseason.

There’s very little chance that jimmy plays for the niners after the upcoming season. But there’s no reason to cut him. If another team wants him they’ll have to offer some value in a trade. If not, he’ll be the starter week 1. He’s not going to hold out or something, he’ll make is 26 million on a good team.

The point is that SF doesn’t need to get rid of him and he offers them value as a proven starter that knows the offense on week 1. Since there is a use for him in SF and they can afford him, they have leverage in trade scenarios this offseason.

My point is it costs the 49ers very little to cut him as opposed to paying him for the upcoming season. That would seem more valuable to me than waiting for a middling trade offer. We shall see.

I think they'll keep this act up for a while, but they will cut him after that unless another team blinks and gives up a draft pick.

He's not going to be happy if they traded a bunch of picks to move up and draft someone to replace him, and then they ask him to caddy for that guy.

A month ago Jones was thought to potentially be available if the Pats traded back. Now he might be #3?

That's.....crazy.

Yeah...it went from "can we take him with a 2nd & do we want him if he's there" to "3 1sts isn't enough to get Mac Jones?"

I still don't really buy it & think it's Lance, but it will be amazing if they did all this for Mac...

All those people are 100% speculating, right? And most piggybacking off of each other's speculation.
Yup. Although Chris Simms is apparently tight with Shanahan.

There are other experts out there saying no way on Mac at 3, but those tweets don't support this narrative.

this whole thing is so interesting. I think jimmy will actually be somewhat of an indicator. If they trade him before the draft they’re taking jones.

If not, I think lance/Jones /fields are all on the table with jimmy possibly staying. They’re a win now team.

interestingly there’s also some experts that think they might try to even move up one more with the jets because Wilson is who they really want.

at least we’ll have something to speculate about for 5 weeks while waiting for the vaccine.

But who cares about his happiness? It's the NFL. Nobody is happy outside of a handful of guys. It's not a players league. Any money they save by cutting him will be wasted at this point, it really doesn't matter for this season.

Wilson was drafted in the 3rd, so both Brady and Wilson did not get taken in the first 2 rounds in the modern scouting era
Cousins and Dak were in the 4th too
Romo was undrafted.
BB doesn’t like the ‘all QB all the time’ aspect of GM and HC planning, and wants to move forward with a more distributed offense.
He’s going to apply ‘bend don’t break’ to ‘gain don’t highlight’. It’s not quite ground and pound, but it’s similar.
Think about it. Having such a singular vulnerability must irk him (he and I are close friends, obviously).
I think he’s angling toward Ubuntu over ‘QUARTERBACK!’
hes going to stick with Cam.

(or, yknow, big trade will be announced by sunrise...I’m speculating with the rest of you).
