If Rodgers is actually available I can't see the Pats being able to give the best offer. Honestly even though he probally only has 2-3 years left tops maybe, that shouldn't be a problem for Bill.

Given Rodgers's age I think that there's a *real* limited market. How many teams are there willing to bid on a guy entering his age 38 season? That's not just a team in Win Now mode, that calls for a team in Win Now and I Don't Give a Fuck What Happens Four Years From Now Because I'll Have the Record for Total Wins, Regular Season Wins, Postseason Wins, and Superbowl Wins mode. And there ain't a lot of options there.

And what about AR's contract? I can't imagine he would come cheap, and the Patriots don't have that much cap room left I don't think.

What would the Pats even have to give up to make it happen? 3 1sts and Gilmore?
Draft Fields tonight and package him with JCJ and 2 future 1sts?

A better question might be how much you’d be willing to give up?

It’s been too long since we’ve tasted the nation’s tears. This is now my dream scenario.

Except no way is he allowed to wear #12.

It's the NFL though, cycles are only 4 years tops anyway though, and an elite QB makes you a contender right away most of the time.
I think you can safely put the following teams on that list:
NE, NO, SF, PIT, CHI, IND, LVR, TEN, PHI, WAS, MIN, CLE?

It's more a problem for the Packers as I think his base salary is around $15 million next year. The cap hit would put the Packers in the running for the #1 pick, though.

Thinking about this Rodgers situation really reinforces for me how bizarre it was that there weren't more teams trying to sign Brady. Sure, there is an age difference. But they had the chance to sign the GOAT for no cost whatsoever (other than salary cap implications).

Who says there weren't? Brady may simply have let it be known it was TB or NE and teams moved on

Rodgers is coming off an MVP and Brady was coming off one of the worst seasons of his career at the age of 41. I think it's as simple as most teams thought Brady wasn't capable of playing near an MVP level anymore.

I think that Rodgers is as likely to end up in Chicago as I am to win the MegaMillions on Friday. My odds might be a bit better than the Bears'. That goes double for the Vikings given the money and dead cap they have tied up in Cousins. Some of those teams have already placed wagers on expensive QBs that they're not going to be able to call back, while the Niners just surrendered a draft haul to trade up for a low priced QB, I don't think they're reversing now. I think it pretty much comes down to New England and Pittsburgh. Possibly the Saints.

I don't think the Packers are trading Rodgers to Bears/Vikings either, but Cousins wouldn't be a big problem. He would be $20m dead if they trade him. Plus he has 2/$56m left that's fully guaranteed that would go with him when he's traded.

I assume some team would willingly take that on (Shanny???).

Quick google search says $5 mil and change for PIT’s cap space. I know little of their roster/payroll construction. How would they or NO afford it??

I'm pretty sure that the Vikings guaranteed a lot more salary when they gave Cousins that extension.

Yeah, it's guaranteed salary, though, so if they trade him, the new team pays it. If they cut him they'd be screwed af, though.

You asked how many teams would be willing to bid on Rogers. That's a different question than who can actually get it done.

My entire point is that most of his list is full of teams that aren't going to bother. I mean I guess that Chicago could call, but Green Bay ain't answering the phone.

I'm not sure the Vikings are going to find a lot of takers for that deal this late in the season. Maybe the Raiders?

Yes. He had the greatest QB of all time and wanted to part ways when he got older. Why would Aaron Rodgers be any different?
When Brady was 37/38, like Rodgers is now, Bill gave him a two-year extension (meaning he was locked up for three seasons).

I don't want to derail the thread but I see plenty of reason why the Rodgers situation is different to Brady's. How the player felt about being there is a huge one. Another reason is Rodgers is coming off an MVP year and younger than Brady was (albeit slightly). Another reason is to win without Brady. Sure these are all speculative but I can't accept 0%

Brady was MVP in 2017 at 40.

i think aaron would perfectly glidepath him to retirement with a perfect chance to quickly build a super bowl caliber team one more time.

100% think he would be in...but 20 other teams are too and I cant see them being in enough to win that battle

It might be different if Aaron’s personal trainer doesn’t start telling Bill’s players to stop weight training.
I get that part of it, but we've seen how Bill operates for 20+ years now. Cut bait a year early. Even if it might be a productive year.

This is quite the hypothetical since I don't see the Packers ever trading ARod to Vikings...

... but Cousins would make $21m this year for his new team & $35m next year, & he would be a fine get for a team who misses out on one of the elite QB prospects.

The Broncos seems like a good spot for Cousins. Colts could trade for him & move Wentz if they wanted. Idk how he left things with WFT, but that would be a nice get for them.

I agree that Green Bay’s front office isn’t picking up phone calls from Minnesota. And if you’re the Vikings you’re getting gifted the division when GB tanks the season. So I don’t think they bother calling in the first place.

Yeah, you usually have to focus on your own plan regardless of what others are doing, but if GB really trades Rodgers, then that has to impact MN’s decision making re the next 2 years. I think that confirms that they ride with Cousins and build up around him. Hell, they probably spend extra to trade up for a 2d Rd pick this year in a GFIN move.

Or a team that feels like they’re on the brink and either has never won it or hasn’t won it in a long time. In all honesty, while I don’t know how the contracts would work, a Dak for Rodgers deal (probably some picks added in somehow) would be super interesting. Dallas with Rodgers would be the premier viewing team in the league, and would be loaded for bear. And it would give GB the QB to replace Rodgers. And I bet the salaries are pretty close.

But I bet there are $$ cap reasons why this couldn’t be done, even if they wanted to.

Dallas doesn’t even make the call. Because they just signed Dak and they’d need to drop a bunch of players to account for the dead cap. People need to understand that there’s a lot more to this than Is Player X a marginal upgrade on my existing QB?

Poor Justin, I was so hoping to see him play for a competent team. Now his career’s in jeopardy.

Brady was MVP in 2017 at 40.
DYAR:
2017 - 1st
2018 - 8th
2019 - 16th

Passer rating:
2017 - 3rd
2018 - 12th
2019 - 18th

Adjusted net yards per attempt:
2017 - 3rd
2018 - 11th
2019 - 17th

QBR:
2017 - 3rd
2018 - 6th
2019 - 16th

Brady went from (statistically) all-pro level to solidly above average to mediocre in his three final years with the Pats. He's only comparable to Rodgers if Brady had been a free agent after the 2017 season, not two full years of age and [perceived] decline later. In the 4 stats above for 2020, Rodgers was 2nd in DYAR, 1st in passer rating, 1st in adjusted net yards per attempt and 1st in QBR. Add in the 5 year age gap and it's really not a mystery why the demand for Rodgers this offseason would be a lot higher than it was for Brady last year.
