After getting Mac Jones in round 1, what will BB do in day 2? Here are the current picks for the Pats:
  • 2nd round: No. 46 overall
  • 3rd round: No. 96 overall
We can expect some trades to fill in that gap between the picks. I'd be absolutely ecstatic if NE can pick off OL Tevin Jenkins or WR Elijah Moore. I'd be happy with someone like OL/C Landon Dickerson as well.

Day 2 starts 7 PM EST.

I'd love to see them move up to snag Barmore or Moore, in that order of preference. Barmore would really add an interesting weapon to the D-line next year, and a long term building block there. I don't see him slipping far.

A lot of folks aren't huge fans of the Barmore fit and I kind of agreed. Would not have been happy at #15. But at 46? Worth gambling on the upside.

Lazar on Barmore:

I’m significantly lower than most on Barmore’s fit for the Patriots, but there are things to like about his game. My hesitation with the Alabama defensive tackle is that he’s a boom-or-bust prospect whose preference is to fire off the ball to shoot gaps and rush the passer. Barmore is not a two-gapper against the run, and his best fit is as a penetrating three-technique. Even Nick Saban felt that way about Barmore, which is why he didn’t play every down for Alabama. Barmore’s get-off and upper-body power are flashy qualities if he can commit to playing with better pad level against the run. As we saw in the college football playoff, he can be a game-wrecker. In New England’s system, Barmore is likely a situational pass-rusher in Adam Butler’s old role. Is that worth a first-round pick? No, and it’s certainly not worth it at 15.
I'm most interested in OT and WR. That's the real depth in this class and there are a ton of fringe round 1/2 top 50 guys who could fall to #46 or further if they trade back to close the gap with #96.

WRs: Elijah Moore, Rondale Moore, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Amari Rodgers
OTs: Liam Eichenberg, Dillon Radunz, Sam Cosmi, Teven Jenkins, Walker Little

If not those guys, I could see them going for a long-term McCourty replacement. Richie Grant is probably the best fit for a single-high safety. Trevon Moehrig is still on the board too as the consensus #1 safety and was seen by most as an easy 1st rounder.

I see Barmore as more of a 5 technique on 1st and 2nd downs with the ability to move inside on passing downs. He reminds me a bit of Ty Warren.

I agree, WR or OT would be next for me, with CB close to follow.

I live Elijah Moore if he is still around

I wonder if the Pats will be willing to trade a mid rounder to close that gap between 46 and 96. Thats a big gap, we have too many picks given current roster construction, and there are a lot of good players in the rounds 2-3 range.

I'd love to see them come out of tonight with a CB and OT for 2022 roster planning. There's some really talented CBs available:

Tyson Campbell
Eric Stokes
Kelvin Joseph (probably not a NE culture fit, but really talented)
Asante Samuel
Ifeatu Melinfonwu
Aaron Robinson
Paulson Adebo

I'd personally prefer one of the Georgia kids. Samuel would be interesting based on his dad, and he has the JC Jackson/Malcolm Butler physical profile that NE doesn't shy away from.

OT also has some talent remaining:

Teven Jenkins
Liam Eichenberg
Samuel Cosmi
Dillon Radunz
Jalen Mayfield
Walker Little
Spencer Brown
Larry Broom
Stone Forsythe
D'Anter Smith

I think there's more quality OT depth, so I'd personally try to secure a CB first. Then take a developmental OT later on; Spencer Brown would be my pick at 96 (but I expect they trade the Brady comp pick because that's a BB thing to do; not set up one player to be the guy they got for Brady leaving).

GB picked Stokes @ #29.

Any worthy late round WR flyers you would recommend?
I really appreciate all of the work you and SMU share with the board. You guys are aces.

If the Pats are looking to bolster the WR corps, Nico Collins out of Michigan is a really strong prospect. In one of the other pre-draft threads however, someone brought up the valid point that regardless of Nico's potential it would be somewhat overlapping with Harry here.

I really like Melifonwu at CB as well.

Per the Rich Hill chart, 46 + 120 could get the Pats to 39, and 96 + 122 could get them to 75. I'd probably pull the trigger on both depending on who is available. There is no way that 9 rookies + Mac are making this roster.

Would LOVE one of the Moores today, or Jenkins. Wouldn't be mad at all with a Barmore or Asante Jr.

There’s so much Day 2 depth that Minny’s trade down is looking brilliant. They can fill some holes and add Mond or Mills as development projects.

Agree. Added a high graded run & pass blocker to an OL in desperate need of help and will get two more bites at the apple at 66 and 86. Nice piece of business for the Vikes.

Ah crud - missed Stokes. For WRs there's going to be really good Day 3 depth. Some of my personal favorites:

Shi Smith
Cade Johnson
Cornell Powell
Anthony Schwartz
Jacob Harris
Simi Fehoko
Racey Mcmath
Seth Williams
Jaelon Dardon

Just looked and they now have 66, 78, 86, 90, 119, 125, & 134. Ton of flexibility for them to jump up to grab their guy or stockpile for next season. Belichick-esque, really.

The Bears basically have the same draft needs as the Pats in Day 2, but only picks 52 & 83 before a long gap to 204 in the coming rounds.

Edit: Good luck to Justin Fields.

It’s the 32nd time in the Super Bowl era the Bears have drafted a quarterback, and Fields becomes the sixth in that span to be a first-round selection, four years after the trade up to get Mitch Trubisky. Jim Harbaugh, selected in 1987, is the only quarterback drafted by the Bears since 1966 to make 100 regular-season starts in the NFL, although only 65 came with his original team.

I'd absolutely like to see them consolidate picks, particularly those fourth rounders.

Also, I'd be SHOCKED if NE keeps 96. That's the Brady comp pick and I can't imagine BB wants to pick one guy who people can point to and say that's the return for Brady leaving. You saw it with the Jimmy G. trade; he ended up turning that pick into several picks. I fully expect the same thing here.

Seems like both Gilmore and JCJ are both likely here for 2021, no?
Likely, yes. But neither are signed beyond 2021 and it's very hard to imagine both will be extended. They aren't going to be flooded with cap space next offseason, and FA corners are pretty expensive. They're going to want one in the pipeline, particularly with JoeJuan not developing as hoped. Plus, there's nothing more that BB loves than a 2nd round DB. It's preordained.

I would like OT or CB (best available) with 46 and then trade up a little (hopefully a little will get it done) for Michael Carter or Kenneth Gainwell (Edit: unless they think J.J. Taylor can be the 3rd down back of the future.). Then day 3 spend on CB/WR/S best availables.

I guess today is a big day for JCJ then. He has a 2nd round tender so could still be traded, right?

I would love to see them go for a slot WR or OL. BBs track record with 2nd/3rd round CBs is not great (and has always been one of the more confounding things about his draft history given how well he coaches up other DBs).

I don't want a CB....
Bill's track record on 2nd round DBs is rough, his track record on developing later round and UDFA CBs is great. I'd much rather address other issues and get a St. Juste or Graham or Thomas later.

Maybe target the Seahawks pick 56 with 2 or 3 of our later round picks? They only have 3 picks this year so you would think they are looking to add.

I don't expect JCJ to be traded. But...

If it were to happen, I'd honestly go target Richard Sherman. Yes, he's old and coming off an injury-plagued season. Yes, he's spent his career in defensive systems that don't really align to what NE does. However, I think he can play in NE's scheme. They'd be able to offer him a real chance at a starting CB spot. BB (at least outwardly) has a ton of respect for his game. Sherman seems like the kind of guy who wants to be wanted, and I think he'd be pretty intrigued to play for Bill. And I'd go draft a couple of CBs to restock the pipeline.

But that's throwing some poop against the wall and not anything I see happening.

I don’t know shit about the draft or football generally, but I’d like the Patriots to draft Saint-Juste at some point because he has a ready-made kickass nickname.

Let's reset:

RBs:
4 guys I like not sure these guys are all day 2 targets but:
Michael Carter: he is a perfect pairing for Harris and is the best receiving RB in the draft. Fantastic runner too. Scheme diverse.
Trey Sermon: some overlap with Harris but one of the best RBs, good in pass pro, and flashes as a receiver.
Jermar Jefferson: probably day 3 but a fast gap/outside-zone guy who is deadly in space. A good compliment to Harris.
Khalil Herbert: Dalvin Cook light - outside zone and one cut and go compliment to Harris. Developing as a receiver like Jefferson.

WRs: Holy shit this list could be long.

Outside/Inside Guys:
Josh Palmer: I love this guy. Think he is a perfect fit for the Pats and will give them a starting a starting X. He beat the best of the press corners in the SEC and was betrayed by poor QB play. I think Palmer is going to be a steal for someone.
Cornell Powell: Think Sanu but good/before injured. He is a smooth route runner who is generally good at every receiving skill.
Elijah Moore: I mean he's one of my guys... he's electric with the ball in his hand. He runs great routes, his RAC is world class, and he can do the gadget stuff too. He is a complete receiver and an elite one at that. Best dog-pissing TD celebration too.
Rondale Moore: World class RAC but he is small and injury prone. I love Rondale though - he is 35th on my board. I can't quit him. He also might be inside only right now.
Seth Williams: He is a little slow and not the best separator but I think he can give you WR3-4 quality production at the X position and do some vertical slot stuff as a big slot although he is primarily an outside guy.
Nico Collins: He is either an X or a flanker but can do some slot stuff as well - he is like Seth Williams where you worry about his separation ability. He is an above average route runner with great contested skills and has speed for days.
Terrace Marshall Jr: Can play any position and gives you elite size/speed. He has some effort concerns, route running needs work, and he doesn't block. Not my favorite for the Pats.
Dyami Brown: He plays like Terry McLaurin - he just stacks you vertically and has elite ball tracking. I love Dyami - think he would fit in very well here.

Inside only guys:
Cade Johnson: one of my favorite slot guys from a small school. Good hands, great routes, great vision, RAC, etc. He has decent speed too. He will also give it his all as a blocker.
D'Wayne Eskridge: He reminds me a lot of Reagor stylistically as a guy who really struggles with physicality in routes but has terrific RAC and is a core 4 special teamer and a great returner.
Jalen Darden: Great RAC, speed, routes, he's just small and undersized.
Tylan Wallace: Not a huge Tylan guy at all - he can't deal with physical play and he has some major injuries.
Amari Rodgers is an excellent option but he doesn't have the agilities the Pats like.

I will reset OT/OG and CB in my next post.

@BaseballJones Infinite-monkeys with a shitty laptop but for draft content ;).

I forgot to mention Kenny Gainwell for Memphis as a RB who could fit. He can be a receiving back and an outside guy who also would do better in gap concepts. I have some issues with Gainwell's pre-LOS vision, blocking, and his agilities as a slot guy are way below what they like: at ~7.2 IIRC. So while he is in play and I could see them liking him I am not sure I would take him or project him as a good fit here. YMMV.

They also don't have a ton of roster spots. They're carrying 4 TE, a FB, and 5 WR already. It would be weird if they didn't trade into next year.

CBs:

Day 2 they tend to go for guys who have a sub 7, 3-cone and they like cones in the 6.8's. The problem with that is a lot of these guys had bad cones.

There are a plethora of guys who are possible fits for us but would excel in the Seattle press-zone scheme: Paulson Adebo, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Tyson Campbell, Ben St. Juste, Tay Gowan, Israel Mukuamu, Kelvin Joseph, Keith Taylor, Robert Rochell, and Ambry Thomas.

Outside CB:
Paulson Adebo: This guy is awkward as fuck, opted out, and had a bad 2019. He has the testing scores but his footwork is just sloppy. I think Adebo is a Seattle press-zone guy and I have thought that since I saw him day 1. I saw tackling issues with Adebo as well as not being good in run support. I am not an Adebo guy BUT his testing fits the Pats.
Ben St. Juste: Another guy who is awkward as fuck, HT @Super Nomario. I am higher on him than Dave even though I think we have the same grade or around the same grade on him. He is JJW but faster and better in run support. I love his fit here and think as he grows as a player and gets more experience he will be a solid CB2. I like his press-man skills.
Ambry Thomas: Opted out and played undersized because of a gastro-intestinal issue in 2019. He gained 10-15 pounds and is a good press-man guy. He has play-strength issues and I am not sold on his agility. Has speed for days and can possibly do FS stuff.
Kelvin Joseph: bad agilities and his eye discipline is horrific. I am not a Kelvin Joseph fan but he has decent ball skills and if you fix his eye discipline you can work around some hip stiffness because of his route anticipation. Not a perfect fit IMO though.
Robert Rochell: Has the athleticism and is good in run support but he needs a lot of technical work and the ball-skills aren't there yet. If he plays to the sum of his parts he will be excellent but if not... not so much.

Ifeatu Melifonwu and Tyson Campbell could be fits for them but neither have the agilities they like and Campbell doesn't have ball skills or finishing skills. Ifeatu isn't physical enough and like Campbell is in position so many times to make a play but does not. Israel Mukuamu is an even more extreme version of Ben St. Juste - he is so stiff in the hips though it would surprise me if they went with him. He might be able to do some FS work and played there in 2020 for USC (South Carolina)

Outside/Inside/Maybe-Safety:
Aaron Robinson: My man from UCF - love his run support, versatility, scrappiness. He is a baller, shot caller, and will CHIRP IN YOUR FACE. He is fire. And I love playing with fire. He is one of my dudes.
Asante Samuel: He can be your slot corner, can match up on smaller outside WRs. He can play quarters and is great in zones BUT can do some press-stuff with more favorable matchups. He is undersized though but tested well. Not sure he is a great fit here.

EDIT: I will reset the board on IDL, and Safety too. I love UCF safety Richie Grant who has the best man-to-man coverage skills in the class at FS. Has played all 3 safety spots and is the best in run support. Think I need to give Super Nomario a HT on his man ot man superlatives but I also saw the same thing.
