Miami (oh, Miami!)
Updated as we go. We'll add/remove based on suggestions, then we can prune.

The key to All-Potential Sox would be 5 tool pom-pom waving that never fully materialized, despite opportunity. Never trade this guy! He'll be hitting 30 home runs in no time. Etc. (Injury exception applies - Westmoreland, etc)

1B: Lars Anderson, Dernell Stenson, Michael Almanzar, Dave Stapleton
2B: Donnie Saddler, Wil Cordero
SS: Rey Quinones, Juan Bustabad
3B: Wilton Veras, Arquimedez Pozo, Garin Cecchini, Tony Blanco, Will Middlebrooks, (honorable mention: Andy Marte).
OF: Franchy Cordero, Michael Coleman, Wily Mo Pena, Rusney Castillo, Jeff McNeely, La Schelle Tarver, Sam Horn, Izzy Alcantara, Greg Blosser, Chico Walker, Jason Place.
C: Lavarnway, Lomasney, Swihart, Wedge, Soppach.
DH: Morgan Burkhart.

SP: Robinson Checo, Brian Rose, Henry Owens, Paxton Crawford, Michael Bowden, Allen Webster, Ruby De La Rosa, Dennis Tankersley, Trey Ball, Bobby Sprowl, Mike Brown, Frankie Rodriguez.
RP: Craig Hansen, Anastacio Martinez

Managed by: Joe Kerrigan, Butch Hobson.
GM: Peter Gammons

The key to All-Disappointment Sox would be a reasonable expectation that was never met. (Injury exception applies - e.g. Matt Clement. Unless there was something truly obnoxious about the injury and/or recovery that rises to a personally attributable disappointment.)

1B: Tony Clark, Danny Carter
2B: Wil Cordero, Carlos Baerga
SS: Edgar Renteria
3B: Panda
OF: Mark Whiten, Carl Crawford, Kevin Mitchell, Hanley Ramirez, Ivan Calderon.
C: AJ Pierzynski, Dave Valle, Macfarlane.
DH: Jack Clark, Roberto Petagine.

SP: Steve Avery, Matt Young, Frank Tanana.
RP: Eric Gagne, Ramiro Mendoza

Managed by Bobby Valentine, Grady Little.
GM: Lou Gorman

Also, I was wondering, what would the RS "All Potential Team" be?

1B: Lars Anderson?
2B: Will Cordero (hm- Donnie Saddler)
SS: Julio Lugo?
3B: Will Middlebrooks?
LF: Franchy Cordero
CF:
RF: Willy Mo Pena (hm- Rusney Castillo)
C: Lavarnway (hm- Swihart)

SP: Robinson Checo
SP: Brian Rose?
SP:

RP: Craig Hansen
RP:
I think I'd break Lugo out of this.... he seems more in a different category of "severely disappointing team", which would include his fellow ex-Ray, Carl Crawford in CF along with Hanley Ramirez in LF, Fat Panda at 3rd and Eric Gagne as the closer.

Fair enough. I mentioned him because IIRC, Lugo was supposed to have a "does everything well" synergistic-goodness-that-hides-from-traditional-stats which of course resides along with the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus somewhere. All-Disappointment Sox would certainly have Tony Clark at first.

The key to All-Disappointment Sox would be a reasonable expectation that was never met.
The key to All-Potential Sox would be 5 tool pom-pom waving that never fully materialized, despite opportunity.

There should be an injury exception for both.

Please!!! I'm a fan of these two threads!!!!

I'm blanking on his name and can't remember... Ryan something. Theo sort of opted for him as future RF over the other kid that they sent to Oakland for a reliever (can't recall any of this stuff and about to head to the airport). Reliever was always injured. Kid they sent to Oakland didn't have great plate discipline but had awesome power and was a great defensive kid. Ended up in Houston for a while... never awesome but would have been a great stop gap after Drew.....

Well, he's 24 and still pitching. So maybe a touch too soon.

I'm looking for can't-miss, never-trade-the-guy hype. But not derailed by injury, so much as just revealed as wish-casting.

Come on guys! Someone must have read 'old Hickory back in the day.

I'd nominate Ryan Kalish for the Outfield. Man, I thought he was gonna be good and I loved his athleticism.

Edit - He probably falls into the derailed by injury category though.

Swihart over Lavarnway as starting C for sure, and Garin Cecchini at 3B. I guess Jed Lowrie for SS although I don’t think that quite fits.

Some SP suggestions: Henry Owens, Allen Webster, Rubby de la Rosa, Michael Bowden, the guy they traded for Pomeranz whose name escapes me.

Kalish.

If you want to be mean, we can add Westmoreland.

And Stenson is the 1b, not Lars Anderson.

And Wil Cordero wasn't a Sox prospect. He was a wife beater who had a career in Montreal prior to coming to Boston.

Updated. I figure we can sort them out later in discussion.

Cordero could be on either list, but I put him on the "potential" list because he was acquired at age 24 because (IIRC) he was supposed to be the next greatest thing waiting to blossom in Boston. He never did get better and disappointed majorly.

These don't have to be drafted prospects, so much as heralded guys who are going to make that final adjustment and amaze us all. Hence Wily Mo Pena.

Fair enough, Cordero just strikes me as more Julio Lugo.

Tony Blanco might have a shot at 3b.

Michael Almanzar was hyped for awhile too.

The other MR Abbey was talking about is Durbin Feltman but he's still a prospect and having an ok year in Portland.

Relief prospects aren't very hyped but Gammons did his best to hype Anastacio Martinez.

Another guy who was hyped to the moon and back was traded away prior to all that hype in Dennis Tankersley.

For awhile Gammons had an agenda against DD so anyone DD traded away would become a future stud. Guys like Cesar Saba.

I remember my buddy @Dahabenzapple2 predicting a 20 win season for Paxton Crawford (on another board, not here).

Updated. I think we want genuine hype if possible to distinguish as such, at least for a first cut. We can always prune the list later.

I remember the Tankersley buzz - and he has a rare "infinite" ERA for 2003!

Man, that's a name i haven't thought of in a long time. At the dawn of SoSH we salivated over his .384/.442/.668 in rookie ball. Turns out he was pretty studly in Japan for a long time.

It’s a little old school, but La Schelle Tarver was supposed to be one of those prospects.

I remember he came up I think in the 86 or 87 season and had a 12 pitch AB against someone that was hyped as a taste of his abilities at the plate (even though I think he eventually struck out). I think that might have been the highlight of his career.

Here's a Gammons quote for you:

January 1991: “It may well be that 40 years from now, the players remembered most from the early ’90s will be Roger Clemens, Ellis Burks, Jody Reed, Mo Vaughn, Jeff McNeely and Eric Wedge.”

(And no, it's not from the Gammons random quote generator.)

There's a name I can't quite recall, but I hear there's a Sox fan site named after him. He flashed in a mid-season call-up to the tune of 14 HRs in 150ish ABs and had the fandom all a twitter. Samuel...Sam...Sammy...

Tarver came to Boston from the Mets with Schiraldi and Wes Gardner in the Ojeda trade. IIRC he was regarded as the biggest prospect in that deal.

About 90% of the hyped prospects in this thread are courtesy of Gammons.

Not sure which Juan Pena belongs on, because I don't think he was really a huge prospect at the time to be considered all potential, but had those 2 great starts in 99, got hurt, looked good in 2000 spring training, got hurt, and never made it back to the majors.

Too soon, too soon.

Right now his ERA is 3.72 in Portland, and he has 17 strikeouts with 3 walks in 9.2 innings. Plus, he is still only 24.

Ryan Kalish who was mentioned downthread. Other guy was Josh Reddick who we dealt to Oakland for former ROTY closer Andrew Bailey who got hurt in the spring and never did much in 2 years with the Sox.

I believe it was Anderson Espinoza we dealt away in the Pomeranz deal in regards to someone else’s question. There was also Casey Kelly who we sent there for Adrian.

Aaron Sele is another one of those disappointments. He was supposed to be good especially after Clemens supposedly took him under his wing. Nope.

Does he really count? He had a pretty good career after he left the Redsox. Even with the Redsox, he had a 110 ERA+.

It's probably Gammons fault, but I remember being over-hyped for Frankie Rodriguez (as both a P and SS). Casey Kelly 1.0.

Ivan Calderon could occupy space in rightfield for the All Disappointment Sox.
Calderon was one of the last of so many Lou Gorman acquisitions who had hype for what they were before they arrived, but were simply past their prime,so were never going to live up to the hype. Guys like Jack Clark and Andre Dawson and Danny Darwin. Calderon was younger than those guys by 3-5 years (age 31), but he was definitely past his prime. IIRC they traded for him but he was on the verge of being released anyway, so they gave up players they didn't have to to secure his meager contributions.
