The new guys got some burn today in the FCL:

Marcelo Mayer went 0-1 with 3 BB
Tyler Miller went 2-2 with a double, RBI, and a BB
Phillip Sikes went 1-3 with 2 RBIs

Red Sox signed Jose De Leon late of the Reds, per McAdam:
De Leon was once among the game's most promising pitching prospects when in the Dodgers system before being traded to Tampa Bay, where he crossed paths with Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom. De Leon was released by the Reds more than a week ago. He has an elite fastball, but has struggled with his control.

I feel like Yorke's season is sort of going under the radar a bit because he doesn't have ++ physical tools and is already moved over to 2B but he is having about as impressive a debut as you could ask for. He's 19, only played 5 games in a shortened senior year plus some looks at the alternate training site, and is now cruising in A ball.

The advanced approach could have him moving fairly quickly—11% BB rate, 15% K rate with good power for a teenager in his first season as a pro.

One of the soxprospects guys on twitter, i cant remember which, whenever he posts Yorke updates he always posts "Yorke has yet to face a pitch from someone younger than him this season." He's having an EXCELLENT D+1 season.

It's funny, I think we have an idea of what age a prospect should be at certain levels, and you want them to follow a one level per year track or something like that, but it's easy to forget that real prospects are generally WAY younger than their competition. Yorke is about 2.5 years younger than average for his league according to BRef.

I've loved Yorke since watching tape of him hitting at the alternate site last year. The only question with him is can he stick at 2B defensively. If he can then he's going to be their 2B of the future and Downs becomes trade bait (assuming he can rebuild value in Worcester next year). I think between Casas, Yorke, and Jordan Boston may have themselves three of the more interesting hitting prospects right now. It'll be four next year when they draft D'Angelo Ortiz. ;)

If Mayer hits like predicted, add him to that list. He had the best hit tool ranking in the draft.

Yorke still has to show power as well. So two questions I'd say.

Another home run for Joe Davis last night. .340/.380/.600 with 15 home runs in 250 AB in 2021

Big Joe Davis sounds like a blues/R&B singer from the 1940s. So I hope he will always be referred to as Big Joe Davis.

Listed at 6'0", 230, he is a burly Napoli/Schwarber type of guy:

He was a 19th-round draft pick in 2019.
He got 40 games with Lowell and had a .764 OPS. This year, he started at Low A and hit .333/.384/.577 in 48 games, then was promoted to High A, where in his first 16 games, he's hit
.379/.382/.712, with 6 HRs in his first 66 at-bats. Only one walk so far, which isn't good, but also only 8 whiffs. He walked a bit more at Salem, so hopefully he'll do more of that soon, but right now he is demolishing the ball, so no need to yet.
He DH'd about a third of the time in Salem, but so far in all 16 games with Greenville he has played first base. Hopefully he's not bad there.

Seems like a fun guy to root for, I hope he keeps mashing.

Eric Longerhagen on Fangraphs had a brief writeup of Connor Seabold's most recent start:
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/daily-prospect-notes-8-6-2021/

I was at Seabold’s first Triple-A start, at Lehigh Valley against his former org, and there he commanded 91-94, while his changeup was frequently plus (he casts it on occasion). He deploys his slider rarely enough that it usually catches hitters off guard even though it’s not a great pitch on pure stuff. His pitch count has climbed — 85 pitches in his 8/4 start, up from about 70 in his first two outings — and he’s one of the few viable, upper-level starters on the Red Sox 40-man (he and Tanner Houck), so he’s likely to be called upon at some point over the next two months. Long-term, Seabold should seize control of a spot toward the back of a competitive Red Sox rotation.
Interesting that his pitch count was up to 85 and the writer thinks he's likely to be called up this season.

When the fangraphs article says that he casts his changeup on occasion, does "casts" have some pitching-specific meaning? Because I'm currently imagining Seabold casting his chageup spell like a wizard.

Not starting out there, but real possibility that’s where he’ll end up.

If Yorke does get promoted and dominates in his time at Greenville, maybe he could start 2022 in Portland.

Not likely, but far more likely if he finishes this year in Greenville.

Good to remember that not a single press outlet gave the Red Sox a good "draft grade" since they CLEARLY overreached on a prospect that wasn't even in their top 100 players.

Man is he exciting. Hit tool is the most valuable tool to have. Now with power showing… could be a real piece for the future.

He is ‘only’ semi-interesting major league depth but Yairo Munoz has a 34 game hit streak.
Tremendous accomplishment! I just read that it ties Dom DiMaggio for the all time longest Sox organization hitting streak. At 26, he does seem like pretty good depth, already showing that he's a decent hitter in parts of 3 big-league seasons - plus this amazing hitting streak even if it is AAA

Brayan Bello with another strong outing - 6 IP, 1 run, 0 BB and 9 punchouts. His SO/IP of ~1.5 is very impressive for a young prospect and seems to be going up if anything

So glad Verdugo has been solid for the Sox because the rest of that Betts trade looks real bad right now, with Wong and Downs both batting in the .180s

I am glad that Arroyo seems to be panning out, he is here through 2024 so that makes the sting of Downs not living up to expectations hurt less. He is only 22 but that .181/.270/.305 line with 95 Ks in 294 PAs is abysmal

On the Athletic Baseball Podcast on Friday Keith Law mentioned Brandon Walter as a pitcher who is flying up the rankings. Walter was a 26th round pick in 2019 out of Delaware. Law said he was up in the mid high 90s and could be the top pitching prospect in the organization. He is 24 but is currently striking out about 37% of hitters faced at A and high A this year with a 100 k's to 14 bb.

Walter looks like a good prospect, but there might be some backstory for Law to pump him up. Law lives in Delaware and has been bemoaning for years the lack of prospects coming out of his state. Might be part of the reason he is giving Walter the shine when nobody else seems to be doing the same.

Law did comment that he was disappointed in himself because he never went to see Walter pitch as an amateur and Walter was right down the street.

Is Chris Murphy interesting? He’s 16 on SP top 20, lefty with 3 pitch mix, misses bats. Put up a nice line of 7ip, 1h, 7k/1bb tonight and has performed since promo to AA. 20 HRA is not ideal though. Future pen arm, maybe.

What’s the consensus on German? Seem like lackluster numbers for a guy who seemed to be the main prize for taking on Ottavino’s deal.
