Quick Lane this year?
Hoping for the most obscure bowl possible to avoid as much media coverage as possible. Wake gave up 56 to Army. We put up 10 on them. I don’t care how hobbled Jurk is, that’s a joke.

If Hafley doesn’t revamp the OL coach and OC positions this offseason, he might as well leave now.

There's a lot of smoke around the program that Hafley is gone so let's hope it's just smoke.

I feel like they kind of get a pass for this game considering like half the team had the flu this week including Jurk

Fine if you want to discount the results a bit but they completed 3 passes for 19 yards against a defense that gives up points like Halloween candy. Jurk was clearly playing hurt down the stretch, which was the biggest problem.

Lynn
As in, heard from a person(s) you know? Or Twitter? Hafley to Washington has been the subject of Twitter scuttlebutt for weeks, but hard to tell how reliable it is.
A good friend who is tied into the local sports scene. I don’t like sharing stuff I hear because for the most part, it’s not concrete. The friend isn’t BC specific, but that’s why it caught my attention.

It would be a bummer, if true.

Ultimately if Ryan Day went to Chicago and wanted Hafley to be his DC I think he'd leave. There was definitely some smoke to the situation.

Good news. We haven’t seen the best from him. Lots of work to do though. Cignetti can go.

It would have been nice to wait and evaluate after next season before extending him, but with other programs sniffing around it probably needed to be done now. Next season should tell a lot, hopefully we take a step forward as he'll have 3 years of his own recruits in place with a top 30 ranked freshman class. Another 6 win season would be disappointing.

Lol... the idea of Cincy losing to Houston and ending up playing BC in the freezing cold in the Fenway Bowl is kind of funny.

I did a double take on this. In what universe does this make sense?
Or I'm an idiot. I tried to make sure that they were the latest ones. I never heard of that site and thought it was new. Plus Cincinnati being so highly ranked isn't something I'm used to.

It isn't basketball...you're only going to see glimpses of the class' abilities in 2022, 2023 more important for that. Unless you are talking about the freshmen that are there now.

I was talking more about the prior 2 years of recruiting, and the time needed to implement his coaching methods and getting past the first time head coach learning curve. But, considering the projected quality of the incoming freshmen, some of them should have an impact.
The bottom line is any grace period he might have had as a new coach is coming to an end.

Seriously? He’s still mostly working with the talent Daz brought in. And when a bad coach who is given too much rope (as Daz was) finally leaves, things usually get worse before they get better — because the last couple recruiting classes are generally even weaker than the ones that came before, as recruits can see the writing on the wall. The new coach can knock the ball out of the park recruiting-wise, but having talented 19 year olds is a poor substitute for having talented 22 year olds, especially on the line.

That doesn’t mean we should have no expectations for Hafley, but we’re going to be grading him on a curve for a couple more years.

If we have another 6 win season next year are you OK with that because of the lingering Daz effect?

I agree that Daz's negative impact on the program will still be a factor, but its not like EVERY remaining Daz recruit is useless. How many "bad Daz" scholarships will still be on the roster next fall? The transfer rules make it a little easier to revamp quicker after coaching changes.

No doubt it will still take a couple years for him to fully put his stamp on things. All I'm saying is that in year 3 we should start seeing progress, and that curve we are grading him on is flattening out.
I'm not expecting Top 10 or anything, but is 8 wins and a better bowl next year an unreasonable expectation?

The bigger question is whether he has the ability to deal with his mistakes and fix them as CEO.. Applebaum has been a disaster as ol coach no matter how much Hafley says he watches the film. Cignetti basically was good for getting Phil here but past that the offense and offensive players haven't developed well at all and they need a better offensive mind calling plays. He had no plan to have a backup QB that could play at a level above high school.

He did nothing the last two years Daz couldn't have done and I absolutely loathe Daz. The reality is in year three they should make the jump that we made under tob. If they don't then he's yet another coordinator that can't be the guy, only the guy the guy depends on.

I'm optimistic he'll grow into the job in year 3 given year one was a washout and growing pains.

Here’s the 2022 sked. It’s tougher than 2021, with a trip to South Bend effectively replacing the home game against Mizzou.

https://fbschedules.com/ncaa-2022/team/boston-college

They’ll beat Rutgers, UConn and Maine, and they should beat Duke too. Road games against ND, NC State, and Wake Forest will be tough, as will Clemson at home. (I’m assuming Dabo grabs a QB from the transfer portal.) They’ll make or break their season in the other four — Syracuse, @VT, Louisville, and @FSU.

They are more likely to win one of the hard four than lose one of the easy four, and more likely to go 3-1 than 1-3 in the middle four. If I had to make a prediction, I’d probably say 7-5, or maybe 8-4. I agree that 6-6 would be disappointing, but it wouldn’t be “the sky is falling” territory.

We’ve covered this upthread, but there was no realistic way to have such a plan. No one was going to transfer here to back up Jurk, and no one Haf recruited from high school was going to be ready to step in — QBs who are good enough to hold their own in P5 their first two years out of HS aren’t coming to BC, no matter who is coaching.

Look, I'm the least likely guy on this board to get into a message board back and forth, but I don't agree with that for a second whether or not we covered it upthread. I'm not saying we need to be Georgia who had Stetson Bennett to back up JT Daniels and may lead them to a title, but they thought Grosel was good enough to play and as such didn't prepare Morehead at all to play, to the point that when they finally did put him in, they didn't have enough plays he even knew to run. So bad that another walkon, Rueve, was the third string, and clearly he can't play because a mannequin would have been better than Grosel in some of those games. I just don't understand how it isn't reasonable to expect a coach making 4 million dollars a year to be able to have enough depth to be able to competitively play ACC football if the starter gets hurt. If the point is they can't do it in year 2 after a gym teacher torched the program for 5 years, fine. But it's a reasonable standard as the program develops. QBs get hurt.

He did nothing this year Daz wouldn't have done. He admitted himself in his postseason presser he didn't have enough depth prepared. I expect it is growing pains and he'll be better next year.

I wasn’t suggesting we couldn’t debate it. I was just acknowledging that I was repeating myself.

I’m not sure we disagree. It’s absolutely a reasonable expectation for a program to have a decent backup QB. But since Daz left the cupboard bare, and Hafley wisely brought in Jurk to start, his options to fill the backup role were limited. Some problems can’t be solved quickly.

My take is that Hafley built a team that could be very good if they caught a few breaks, but couldn’t build a team resilient enough to withstand the loss of its starting QB. That’s good for year 2, considering what he inherited. I’m looking forward to next season.

Maybe Hafley should have looked for a backup QB at Harrington Village if this Baylor game is any indication.

Looks like Jurkovec is coming back. I would be surprised if Flowers joined him though. Big year for Hafley in 2022.

BigSoxFan had it, but here’s a source citing sources! Right call for Phil and great for the program too.

per Pete Thamel:
Sources: Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec has informed BC coaches he’ll be returning to school next year. He’ll be among the top quarterbacks NFL scouts will be watching in 2022 for the 2023 draft.

He confirmed it on his twitter machine. No way Flowers is coming back. I think they have some pretty good talent returning and 2 of their highest rated incoming recruits are WRs and both 4-Star.

Didn't realize Maryland was a hotbed. I hope Hafley knows what he's doing. Would like to see more kids from CA, FL, OH, and NJ, but he's active in GA and TN it seems.

MD is because of the DC and Assoc HC Abdul-Rahim. He has significant contacts and it is a talent rich area.

That’s amazing
I thought he would have been a relatively early draft pick and would have taken the money.
Does he have an NIL deal?

I think it really depends on how badly they wanted to play in these cancelled bowls. Would today’s two cancellations have been played had they been the national semifinals? I don’t know the answer. It does look like more cancellations are on tap…..looks like Wisconsin/Az State may be next.

How much is really due to Covid and how much is an excuse to scrap poorly ticket-sold games?
