I have a nagging feeling this is going to be really, really close in regards to Papi ... like 2 votes either way close

Has anybody gone to Cooperstown for the induction before? If Papi gets in, I am seriously considering going. What's the lodging situation like?
I took the kids up one summer and stayed at what was then A Yogi Bear Jellystone Campground. They also rent out cabins and RVs, had a pool, a lake for fishing, grill,. less than 30 minutes to Hall of Fame.

Lodging sucks, sells out like 700 days in advance IIRC, but it could be different now. I went to the Pedro one. Got pizza downtown and slept right on the man drag in my car during a rainstorm, it was kind of cool. Worst part was the drive from 88, smelled of 200 year old industry.

Book early! It's in the middle of nowhere and there's not too many choices. We stayed at a nice bed and breakfast when visiting a few years ago but it wasn't during induction celebrations.
Yep. We went for some random weekend and were stuck in Oswego. I could see ending up in Utica or Syracuse or even farther

I'm not crazy about making so many ballots public while voting is still going on - it may convince some who are on the fence to leave a particular candidate off their ballot because 'he has enough votes already'.

Wow. Voted for Kent, Wagner, Bonds...eight guys total. Not Ortiz.
https://www.yesnetwork.com/yankees/news/curry-explaining-why-i-finally-decided-to-vote-for-barry-bonds-roger-clemens

Edit he explains in the article that this year was about Clemens and Bonds and he will have the brainpower to think about Ortiz and Sheffield maybe next year.
How the hell does it take him a month of researching to figure out who deserves to go into the hall? And how does that research get forgotten each December when he combs through the list of the same guys he didn’t vote for? This is laughably stupid.

When is the announcement? I thought it was 4 but heard it's not till 6? (I don't want to tune in early and have my angst about the Papi getting in amped up.)

The deadline for submitting a ballot was December 31st. FWIW, it looks like about 25% of the ballots had been disclosed by that date. But you make a fair point.

I’ve been trying to boycott the MLB network until the lockout ends. Really about the only way to protest the contract situation, and they’re not going to be able to report anything substantial (until tonight).
I've gone in opposite direction. Watched a bunch of old WS game 7's MLB showed. '52, '82, even rewatched '86. Have '65 still on DVR but probably no time to get to it, before I need to clear space for Olympics.

Also watched a nice Griffey piece (thankfully they skipped over the suicide attempt) and a piece on the mid-80's Cardinals, back when it was more about speed than power.

50% of the votes are known at this current time. 5pm central/ 6pm eastern results are released

Edit: here is info on it streaming: https://nesn.com/2022/01/baseball-hall-of-fame-live-stream-watch-class-of-2022-announcement-online-on-tv/
Yes, I know. I was pointing out that only half that # of votes were known at the deadline for submitting a ballot three and a half weeks ago. Which may or may not have influenced some late ballots per JimD's concern, but less likely than if the deadline were later.

What are the odds they announce it at 6? I expect they will draw it out as long as possible
The show is scheduled from 4:00-8:00, so doing the announcement right about 6-6:15 makes sense. Two hours of lead up, the announcement, and about two hours of breaking down the selections (including interviewing them).

It’s a BS excuse because he doesn’t want to see Papi with “First-Ballot” next to his Hall of Fame designation.

First-Ballot guys are like the 1% of the top 1%. I would imagine that the inevitable adaptation of the universal DH would boost Ortiz’s odds, but it would be a real shame if he were to miss out on that first-ballot status simply because he’s a DH.

Ortiz played a massive role in shaping baseball’s postseason lore in the Oughts.

If Papi misses out today, I hope that is the reason, because it should bode well for an eventual induction.

I would say he’s a near-lock for induction, especially if the universal DH is adopted. Takes some of the stigma away from his lack of defense.

It’s guys like that YES voter with an agenda that make this process laughable. Claiming he couldn’t even wrap his head around Ortiz’s candidacy is horseshit.

He should come out and just say that he doesn’t want to see Ortiz or a DH as a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Instead he hides behind some weak-ass excuse.

The sad part of that is that they have been running lots of old games, really good stuff, not all the time, but a lot. The '75 WS, for example.

Yep. Before all this public ballot stuff, my assumption was that Papi was definitely not going to make it on the first ballot and the main question for determining whether he would make it was how close.

It's looking like it's going to be really close. I don't think he's going to quite get there, but at least the news so far is very positive. It sounds like it's going to be close enough that there's really not much chance that he won't make it next year when the "no first ballot" guys lose that excuse.

It feels dumb that I have "playoff baseball" butterflies for a couple of hours from now, but with the lockout, this might be the biggest celebration coming anytime soon...if he makes it (I think he will). Let's go, Papi!

I guess it's too hard for Jack Curry to have voted for Ortiz because he was too busy "assessing" Bonds and Clemens. What a bunch of contrived BS. Who do these voters think they are?

"Besides Bonds and Clemens, I also voted for Scott Rolen, Todd Helton, Andruw Jones, Jeff Kent, Billy Wagner and Curt Schilling. Regarding the combustible Schilling and his offensive words, I continued to treat his candidacy with more respect than he has treated it. There are other players on the ballot who have been linked to performance enhancers like Gary Sheffield and David Ortiz and players who have been suspended over PEDs like Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez, but I didn’t vote for any of them this time. Now that I have voted for the two players who became the poster boys for the Steroid Era, I will reassess those other candidates next year. This year was about grappling with the dilemma of Bonds and Clemens."

Imagine voting for Scott Rolen and Jeff Kent and not David Ortiz. It makes the whole process seem pointless. Scott Rolen.

Ken Rosenthal is hosting a live Hall of Fame show on Youtube since he's no longer part of the official show. He just had Dustin Pedroia on. Pedey with a classic line about Ortiz: "It was fun to play in the World Series with him because I got to play first and second." His segment starts at about the 17 minute mark.

As a younger fan, Ortiz was the Red Sox during my formative years, probably more so than any other player. Sure, there were others that I loved - Nomar and Pedro are up there, Pedroia comes close, Manny could've been the same without the PEDs + other crap. But Ortiz stands alone. In the past 50 years, I don't think there's a single player as important to the Red Sox as him. He made me a diehard, for better or for worse.

No matter what happens today, I know how important he was to his teams, the franchise, the game, and my fandom. Ortiz is a Hall of Famer in my book.

Hey, in defense of Jack Curry, I'm sure he's held a consistent stance over the years that anyone who accumulated mid-50's career WAR while playing a specialized role that involves spending only a fraction of the time on the field as compared to other players cannot be considered a first ballot Hall of Famer...

Oh, wait...

Here are two things that happened after Ortiz was identified as being on the 2003 list:

1) MLB awarded Ortiz what is essentially their character award, the Roberto Clemente Award.
2) The Commissioner of Baseball advised that being on the 2003 list should absolutely not be held against Ortiz in HOF voting, citing that it was a broad screening test with at least ten false positives.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/91442256

That research took me about two minutes, but I’m presuming a lot of sportswriters just make shit up in their heads.

They also didn’t end up banning all the substances on that list. There’s no way anyone on that list should have it held against them, without more.

Per Brian Kenny:

Papelbon 2.33 ERA ina 10 year peak (06-15)
No R allowed in first 26 postseason innings
1.00 lifetime postseason ERA
