It’s pretty damn funny. I mean, AB doing it makes it less funny because it’s probably full of spite and empty on self-awareness, but repurposing the meme he’d been dragged with for weeks to take a shot at the coach who cut him after Arians shit and pissed and puked all over himself.... well I laughed.

My son posits:

A “slugfest” is where you score a lot back and forth and is a close game.

Whereas:

A “rock fight” is where you DON’T score a lot back and forth and is a close game.

I said “all these games have been slugfests” and he corrected me.

I think, in the NFL, “slugfest” works for both

Who’s right?
I think a slug fest works for both.

But rock right is only for a low scoring game.

I forgot how many pending FA they have. There are a handful of stars/key players and then even more cog starters or rotational players.

Godwin, Gronk, Suh, JPP, Carlton Davis, Ryan Jensen, Jordan Whitehead, Fournette, Ronald Jones, Alex Cappa, a couple key DL.

They’re at 22M under the cap, and they can make more room with some salary/bonus conversions with guys like Barrett, Evans, D. Smith, but they’re gonna lose some notable talent to retirement/FA.

Classic Arians, whenever something goes wrong he makes weird vague comments, comments you never hear other head coaches making because the responsibility falls on them.

Tampa was very lucky to win one SB with him, he is a net negative on that team.
If I’m the owner I find a way to give Arians a graceful exit and run it back with Leftwich (and Bowles). I think that’s the kind of thing that could excite Brady and rejuvenates this group. Another year of Arians seems likely to run hot and cold and end badly.

The dude is just loaded with excuses. He really isn't a good head coach.

Brady's won 7 Super Bowls. Here are the QBs he beat along the way.

2001
- Rich Gannon: 1 MVP, 2 all pro, 4 pro bowl
- Kordell Stewart: 1 pro bowl
- Kurt Warner: 2 MVP, 2 all pro, 4 pro bowl, 1 SB, HOF

2003
- Steve McNair: 1 MVP, 3 pro bowl
- Peyton Manning: 5 MVP, 7 all pro, 14 pro bowl, 2 SB
- Jake Delhomme: 1 pro bowl

2004
- Peyton Manning: 5 MVP, 7 all pro, 14 pro bowl, 2 SB
- Ben Roethlisberger: 6 pro bowl, 2 SB
- Donovan McNabb: 6 pro bowl

2014
- Joe Flacco: 1 SB
- Andrew Luck: 4 pro bowl
- Russell Wilson: 7 pro bowl, 1 SB

2016
- Brock Osweiler
- Ben Roethlisberger: 6 pro bowl, 2 SB
- Matt Ryan: 1 MVP, 1 all pro, 4 pro bowl

2018
- Philip Rivers: 8 pro bowl
- Patrick Mahomes: 1 MVP, 1 all pro, 4 pro bowl, 1 SB
- Jared Goff: 2 pro bowl

2020
- Taylor Heinicke
- Drew Brees: 1 all pro, 13 pro bowl, 1 SB
- Aaron Rodgers: 3 MVP, 4 all pro, 10 pro bowl, 1 SB
- Patrick Mahomes: 1 MVP, 1 all pro, 4 pro bowl, 1 SB

Just a few duds in there, but holy smokes that's a lot of elite QB talent Brady has beaten along the way. He's beaten 7 league MVPs. Warner is in the HOF but these other guys are almost certainly going to be there: Rodgers, Mahomes, Brees, Rivers, Roethlisberger, and probably Wilson and maybe even Matt Ryan.

Can't that be said about all Super Bowl winners, for the most part? What I mean is, both QBs in the Super Bowl are usually on another level. There are outliers of course-Eli Manning beat a pretty elite QB in the Super Bowl-twice.

Well, nobody's done it as much as Brady, for one. But it's a good question. Here's the QBs that Joe Montana beat on his way to four SB titles:

1981
- Scott Brunner:
- Danny White: 1 pro bowl, 1 SB (as the punter)
- Ken Anderson: 1 MVP, 1 all pro, 4 pro bowl

1984
- Phil Simms: 2 pro bowl, 2 SB
- Steve Fuller: 1 SB (as a backup)
- Dan Marino: 1 MVP, 3 all pro, 9 pro bowl, HOF

1988
- Wade Wilson: 1 pro bowl, 1 SB
- Jim McMahon: 1 pro bowl, 2 SB (we forget he was on that '96 Packers team)
- Boomer Esiason: 1 MVP, 1 all pro, 4 pro bowl

1989
- Tommy Kramer: 1 pro bowl
- Jim Everett: 1 pro bowl
- John Elway: 1 MVP, 9 pro bowl, 2 SB, HOF

So Montana beat:
- 4 guys who won MVP
- 2 guys who went to the HOF
- 3 guys who made all pro

Brady beat:
- 7 guys who won MVP
- 2 guys who are in the HOF (Warner, Peyton), but another 3 that are locks (Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger), and another four that likely will make it (Wilson, Mahomes, Ryan, and Rivers)
- 7 guys who made all pro

Obviously this is in large part a function of the number of SB wins for Brady compared to Montana (since I only looked at SB-winning playoff runs). But still, that's part of the point, isn't it? The sheer number of elite QBs that Brady has taken down along the way? It's amazing.

The concept of showing which quarterbacks Brady/Montana, etc beat on their way to Super Bowls is useless ... unless Brady was out there on defense and I missed it.

QB "wins" and QB "head to head matchups" are a media-fabricated and promoted counting stat that shouldn't be used in any legit discussion on the quality of a player.

100% fully agree. It does make for some great television... and oh my those ratings... but we can't seriously talk about QB wins vs other QBs. It makes no sense. Tell me what defenses they beat. Brady won SB's against teams with Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb, Kurt Warner, etc... but lost to Nick Foles and Eli Manning. That tells me absolutely nothing about Brady. It doesn't help me understand him better or those matchups or what happened in those games. It's just, like you said, media fabricated fluff.

It could possibly tell me that he and his offense produced enough to beat other good QBs with good offenses but that doesn't explain the Warner victory, you know? And it doesn't explain how he lost to Foles. Again, it's just... noise? Is that the best word?

We will see if Gisele “wins” this time.

Tom can do whatever he wants no questions asked in my book. I think I’d personally prefer he retire and not pull a Manning so I think now would be a great time.

I’ve known many old lawyers who kept promising their wife they’d retire but never did ( and sometimes ended up divorced)

We'll see, but I feel like pulling a Manning is almost inevitable. He says he wants to stick around until he can't play at a championship level, well, Manning went from legit pro-bowl in 2014 to arguably the worst starter in the league in 2015. When it comes, it comes fast and hard (especially for guys who play at a high level when they're older, the margin for error gets thinner and thinner until one day it's just gone). Maybe Brady breaks the mold and gradually powers down, but we'll see.

Unless he needs to have his spine fused to his neck, I don’t think those situations are comparable. If he does retire, I’ll understand why he came back this year - you defend the title - but I will wish he’d gone out on top last year just because.

Football is going to be so weird when he hangs them up.

Push will come to shove - and he will be back - if he asks her this question: ‘I can only do what I love for a limited time, and I’ve already made adjustments, are you going to rob me of a year or two while I can still do it?’

Can’t really infer anything into these new, carefully considered comments, as he basically just re-poses his life/career dilemma.

I think he can’t let it hang out there too long. It’s going to create a feeding frenzy. He’s obviously thought about it for some time. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t know what the decision is already.

Exactly. He is the opposite of Covid Toe in that sense. Rodgers loves being the center of his own circus as long as he can.

I don't think it's been discussed here yet, but Gronk made headlines earlier today when he hinted that while he might retire, he also might stick around even if Brady leaves. On a per game basis this was statistically his best year since 2015, but he missed quite a bit of time. I really wouldn't be sorry to see him walk away now, while he still can.

He learned from the master. He's spent his entire career upstaging Favre, this is just the last step.

Favre was cosplaying Hamlet, but he didn’t go the step of making himself a lightning rod and self-declared martyr for a key social/public health issue. That’s Rodgers’ genius.

Agree with Broods that Brady has definitely been thinking and talking in earnest with his family about what to do for some time. If I had to guess, the next few weeks will be to see whether he has a change of heart once the fog lifts.

Of course, Rodgers will wait until a kicker is lining up a last-second FG for the win

My guess is he gives it one more year unless it looks like Tampa needs a true rebuild.

Part of the "genuine" discussion in the media is to prove to Giselle he really means it this time, really wants to have family input, really might call it quits for them, yada yada yada.

In the end, he'll probably play in his age 45 season like he always said he would.

He's always said that he doesn't want a farewell tour. If he announces that he's playing next year, everyone will assume that it's his final year and he'll have a virtual farewell tour. Perhaps this is the way it was meant to end - with a near-MVP season and a near-27-3 comeback playoff win.

At the same time, I don't think that La Canfora article really says anything of substance. We don't know how "inner circle" these sources are, and he makes it sound like they're purely speculating.

The Athletic had a story this week saying "Admit it Pats fans, you were secretly rooting for Brady"

He's wrong, in the sense I'm not sure how secret it was for most of us.

That's funny because every Pats fan I know was one of:

1. Openly rooting for him
2. Openly rooting against him
3. (I suspect) Secretly rooting against him

Not sure why anyone would "secretly" root for him -- that's not an ostracized position.

Yeah my sense was that it was like 65% rooting for him, 34% against him, 1% secret.

Edit - also that there was stronger enthusiasm for him last year.

I wonder if the postponement of the final episode of "Man in the Arena" was about being able to include Tom's decision making process at the conclusion of the season. Chopra seems to be pretty inside the Brady family/business and could have reasonably been granted that kind of access. That could explain why the final episode was put on a different production timeline.
