Are they stapling a prospect to him or something?

I was begging for them to sign him in the off-season. That they finally acquire a platoon mate for JBJ, a guy who can mash lefties (834 OPS this year), on August 1st is kind of laughable.

He has a $6M option for next year, I guess the team finds that appealing?

No way Pham exercises his part of the option. He can get more than $4.5 on the market.

If he's not flipped again then I gotta think Verdugo is on the move. The Sox now have three outfielders who can only play left field.

If they're selling some guys and buying some other guys and still trying to compete then he's a pretty big improvement to an outfield that has 3 guys that can't hit lefties

He’s making $6M this year, and he’s only gotten older. If they plan on acquiring him just for the rest of the regular season, than it’s incredibly puzzling.

True. Also has one of the better walk rates in MLB, which can't hurt this lineup.

Essentially $7.5M with the buyout.

Hard to say. Eddie Rosario got 2/$18 last offseason and Brad Miller got 2/$10. I think a lot of teams shy away from Pham's whole thing though, so maybe his market is limited.

Puzzled. Maybe they have a deal in the works where they are going to be getting an OF and they need a guy like Pham to send to the other team?

That actually makes no sense. I don't get it.

Though I probably could have added, unless he just became available, this is probably a move they should have made a few weeks ago once Kike had his setback

It highly suggests to me that we are subtracting an outfielder. Whether that's trading Verdugo or Duran or simply releasing JBJ is the question.

If we’re going to be bad, I’d at least like to be likeable. Pham seems like a toxic weirdo. Hopefully this is just a stopover on his way to somewhere else.

This dude is a colossal prick. And isn’t even that good of a player to make it ignorable. If JBJ, Duran or Verdugo are gone just bring up someone form AA/AAA and call it a season.

Right. Also: Kiké is swinging a bat again and should return some time in August, per Cora yesterday.

Bloom isn't exactly in the running for executive of the year is he? Is there even a plan to what he's doing? Just seems like a parade of has-beens and see what sticks to the wall. (Edit : "Has-beens" or "never were's")

There's no way he's done. Another 22.5 hours to go.

Good news ... Duran no longer has the worst base running instincts on the Red Sox

Also perplexed by this. Will wait until the deadline passes before really passing judgment, but boy this is a weird one. It's not like this team needs another bat to hit lefties. The Sox as a team are already very good against lefties and struggle against righties.
They have 3 outfielders, if you count Franchy as an outfielder, with OPS of under .500 vs lefties this year

By acquiring Pham, will they even be able to get under the cap?
Spotrac shows Pham's 2022 cap hit at $2.1 million. After trading Vaz and Diekman, Sox are a little over $4 mil over the 2022 luxury tax limit of $230 million. Depending on what's coming back, trading JD might get us there ($22 mil luxury tax hit for full-year 2022, so I think we would be shedding $7 mil pro-rated).
