He's giving Carl Pavano a run for his money. He's going to miss all of 2023 with a bruised ass. It's going to be tough since he barely has one.

47 innings that past 3 years. 30 million a year for that workhorse schedule. Just an unbelievable amount of money for a guy who gets hurt while being hurt.

Good news is that it wasn't his pitching hand.

Any chance that DD put in some Lonborg language when they extended his contract?

Wasn't there a report that there was interest from teams in getting Sale at the trade deadline?

Meanwhile, that Wright/Price/Sale commercial sure aged well

48 innings pitched in two years. Nice work if you can get it. $60 million dollars for that.

Why was he riding a bike with his hand injury?
Entirely unacceptable. You get paid 30m per year to play a sport professionally.

Your hand is hurt.. a very necessary thing to ride a bike competently.

You go and ride a bike and and break your wrist.

Selfish. Predictable. Stupid. Hard to like anything about Sale at this point.

Thanks for 2018.

Wow. I guess if you want a silver lining, his shoulder and elbow will be really rested next year and he could respond the way Al Horford did to being benched by OKC last year?

Either way, in addition to his normal rehab, I hope he's seeing a sports psychologist, because this must be an incredibly difficult thing to deal with.

I was checking the date of these posts. I was sure it must beApril 1st. I went through a wormhole back in time, or I’m waking up from a coma and the last 4 months have been a weird, freakish nightmare. This can’t be real.

And btw, why was he riding a bike with a broken finger? This puts the locker room tantrum in a different light. Maybe Chris is a great competitor but a bad decision maker off the field. He’s impulsive, needlessly reckless and a little bit unstable. I assumed the Sox had policies in the contracts about not doing things like this off the field. Metallica had a “no skateboarding“ clause with their management or record label after James broke a bone skating back in the 80’s.

You can't ride a bike with a broken pinky? Jesus, I get that he's gotten hurt over and over again, but that's not a personality defect.

Don't we all know how to ride bikes? You could cut off both pinkies entirely and still brake just fine. I've ridden with a broken hand, it's not that hard. Shit happens. He doesn't live in a plastic bubble.

I'm not even mad about this, this is hilarious.

Are we SURE he doesn't have brittle bone syndrome?

In any case, he'll be DL'd and there's an excellent chance they'll just cut him after the season.

You really think this is the case? They'll pay out his entire contract to not pitch for them rather than at least seeing what he can give next season (although I do acknowledge there is a seemingly considerable chance he has another injury before next season). Not like the Sox are rolling in SP options next season either. I think the only chance he doesn't start next season for the Sox is if they trade him and heavily subsidize the remaining contract. But I doubt they even do that, given how low his value is and I doubt they can get a decent return even with a subsidy.

Is the Sale contract extension the worst Red Sox move in the last 20 years (or more)? I'm sure I'm missing something else but damn this feels bad. We can mostly all agree it was a bad decision at the time but I doubt even the most skeptical thought it could have turned out this bad. Between the poor return on the contract itself, together with the domino effect in terms of team-building (including not being able to retain Mookie or, at least, necessitating a trade of him and not even being able to compete for him in FA), it has just been a nightmare that has put the Sox in a pretty bad position. I don't want to re-litigate topics that have been discussed ad-nauseum, just reflecting on how awful this has turned out on so many levels.

Carl Pavano signed a 4/40 deal with NY and only pitched 145 innings.

Chris Sale signed a 5/145 deal with BOS and is at 48 innings three years in.

Leisurely, sure. But what kind of bike riding are you doing that is so intense that you break a wrist? Admittedly I don't ride a lot but the only times I've ever fallen were when I had too much speed and couldn't control my breaking properly OR when I was first learning clipless pedals which was really scary at first.

I'm not mad either. It's just ridiculous at this point. I just want him ready for next season. I don't think he will be cut. Because if he ever does get healthy, he'll be an asset for them.

IF, being the operative word.

There's no doubt that the Sale deal is far worse but Pavano signed that deal in 2005 so the finances were far different back then.

But at this point it would be an improvement if Sale, like Pavano, landed on the DL with a sore ass.

EDIT: I had completely forgotten that Pavano went 17-11 for the Twins in 2010. Threw 443 innings for them in 2010-2011.

He wasn't even good when he did pitch this year. He was about to get rocked by the Yankees before he took that liner to his hand. 2/3 IP; 2H, 1 HBP, 2ER. Infuriating that investing in this guy contributed to trading Mookie.

Not that I'm exactly sure what to make of Sale's latest injury but those of us who know how to ride bikes without our pinkies also don't fall and break our wrists.

wow. this has just been an historically tough signing for the Sox. Two more years to go. One has to wonder if it is a worthwhile gamble to pay any pitcher huge money on a long-term deal. So many of these things do not work out. I hope he heals from these lates injuries. Makes one wonder about any payer past the age of 25 or 6 and a long-term deal, especially a pitcher.

Piling on, but at this point I'm just relieved that he only fell off the bike and didn't get run over by a Mack Truck.

Is it really? You mean to say that people cannot ride bikes competently when their pinky finger is broken? Do you know for sure that the accident is attributable to Sale not being able to control his bike due to that injured finger? If so, please post a link. Thank you.

Maybe Lily Tomlin Ruth Buzzi hit him with her purse and knocked the bike over.

EDIT: It was over 50 years ago. I got the legendary comedienne wrong.
