NatsTown have lost 7 of their last 8, a success rate their AAA Rochester team looks longingly at, having lost their last 19 (!!!).

Sonny Gray started. David Price got the win. Gary Sanchez and Gallo homered. Kimbrel closed it out. It was like a Red Sox-Yankees game in the Upside Down.

Since winning 8 of 9 games in mid-May, the Twins are 30-37. Trading away more than a half-dozen prospects and adding only Michael Fulmer and Jorge Lopez to their bullpen was a bad trade deadline… they needed to blow that entire pen up and add 3-4 good arms like the Braves did with their outfield last year. The only player the Guardians added at the deadline was a minor league reliever – from Minnesota – but they've moved into first place while auditioning multiple rookies in the lineup. It would be hilarious if that pitcher (Ian Hamilton) makes a positive contribution to the Cleveland bullpen down the stretch.

As of right now, the Orioles have the third wild card and (if I counted right) the tie breaker in head to head record against the Rays.

I think (?) this weekend is their last head-to-head meeting, too, unless I missed something looking at the schedule. The Orioles get the Jays a bunch in August and September.

I have season tickets to their AA team. Not sure I've ever seen a worst-coached pro team, honestly. They have no fundamentals and can't even execute rundowns.

They are wearing beautiful uniforms. I wish they had made the Geico ads everywhere more 1930ish looking.

I've reached the point where I can't watch games with Smoltz.

I dislike the guy so much that I can't give him any benefit of the doubt so I'm just pissed off all game. He said "if you're sitting at home that really hurt." If a guy I like says something like that, whatever. Announcing is hard and so sometimes it comes out weird. But I can't stand the guy so like before I can catch myself my first thought is: "if you're at work it doesn't hurt"?

He said that his dad would want him there
I did hear him say that, and on one hand I certainly get honoring his father’s wish. But trying to picture myself in that situation, I can’t imagine providing commentary and general banter for 3 hours. But everyone reacts in their own way.

Edit: Couldn’t find the lighter fluid in the cabinet so I won’t be lighting any torches. And I lent the pitchfork to the neighbors.

Very much depends on the person I think; I can easily imagine for myself being very happy to just turn my brain off and idly chit chat about baseball for 3 hours and completely pretend the outside world doesn't exist

Unsure where to put this because it’s minor league news, but Cardinals prospect Chandler Redmond hit for the home run cycle yesterday. Two run shot in the 5th, grand slam in the sixth, solo in the 7th, three run homer in the 8th. Only been done one time in baseball history, in 1998, also by a player for the Cardinals AA affiliate

Wynton Bernard last night is everything good about baseball. 10 years in the minors, ML debut, fans going crazy when the ump is overruled on a bang bang play for his first major league hit - as insufferable to me as the Red Sox season has been for the most part, that's another part about what's great about baseball.

Dodgers win their 12th in a row. Longest winning streak since the glory days of Ron Cey’s porn stache & Don Sutton’s perm (1976 in case you were wondering). 79-33 and on a pace for 114 wins. Hello 2001 Mariners!

Yeah, the top three teams are absolutely loaded, those two and the Astros got McCullers back today also.

9th Inning of Twins/Angels ended on a two run game tying triple by Sierra getting thrown out at home trying for the walk off Inside the Parker.

10th Inning of Twins/Angels ended on a diving catch by Buxton, who doubles off Ohtani at 1st.

Ohtani did not retag 2nd anyways, lol.

Mets Dodgers NLCS would be maybe not the most exciting matchup, but big time talent on display. I'd like to see it.

It’s crazy— the defending champs are better than they were last year, on a 98 win pace, and they are an afterthought.

On a related note, the Braves just continue to churn out players— Vaughn Grissom reached base 4 times today and is slashing .389/.450/.778 in his 1st week in the majors.

I would put them in the next tier (#4 and 5 in MLB) with the Yankees but they just lost 4 of 5 to the Mets a week ago and will have a very tough playoff road as the top wild card.

Yup. They’ve got a hard road to hoe. Though if they finish as the top wildcard they at least get home field. And the kids (Contreras, Harris & Grissom) have really given them a shot in the arm.

On a somewhat related note, the NL wild cards look to be incredibly stacked (possibly Braves, Brewers, Padres).

Philly gets Harper back soon, too, I wouldn’t discount them. We all laughed about the “Oops All DHs” lineup, but it’s not all that different from DD’s Detroit teams, and they made the playoffs a bunch, so who knows.

Pujols, with a WAR of 0.5 this year, has now eked his back way over 100 career WAR, a number he has been hovering around since 2016.

Needs 8 home runs to pass A-Rod on the all-time HR list, too. Probably won't happen... but man, that'd be sweet if it did.

Another 7 inning start for Alcantara. 173 IP in 24 starts, 20.1 more innings than the 2nd most (Nola). He also leads the league in IP/GS at 7.2, about 2 more outs than the second best (Cueto/Nola at 6.6). He's one of only two starting pitchers with multiple complete games (3; Framber Valdez has 2).

After selecting Alcantara in the Tommy John Surgery contest, it's good to know my jinxing abilities aren't very good.

So the Brewers received Dinelson Lamet as part of the Hader trade, waived him, and he was picked up by Colorado. Tonight he came into a tie game in the 9th against the Cardinals, walked the 8 and 9 hitters, failed to make an out on a sac bunt loading the bases, and hit the next batter to lose the game. Brewers should have held on to him — might have hurt them less.
