I confess I had not seen that punt until now. Hoooooly shit. Juxtapose that with the punts in the ‘08 game in Buffalo and you’ve summed up the greater Lake Erie aerodynamic experience.

There was a 98 yarder awhile back. Dave Jennings, maybe?

Edit: Steve O'Neal.
Thanks, that's nuts.

I guess I would have to see it to decide which was greater. I mean it could be one of those lucky ones that roll 30 or 35 yards and then I would call it a longer but not necessarily greater punt.

My earlier note about the Punt God’s punt was specific to “in the air from LOS” which I forgot to add for that Patriot punt.
This has always been a pet peeve of mine in how the NFL keeps stats. Field goals are measured from where the ball is kicked, not the LOS. They can do the same thing with punts, using the blue bag that indicates where kick returns start, but choose not to do so.

Here's two.
- when a running back takes a screen pass 98 years, the QB is credited with 98 yards of passing, while a perfect 14-yard bullet into a tight window on 3rd and 13 that's dropped is just an incompletion.
- a perfect pass that bounces off a receiver's hands to a defender is statistically treated the same as a horribly errant overthrow right to a safety.
I'm not clamoring to get these changed, and stats like QBR might address them, but I see these as kind of unfair. It's just the limitation of stats, like a line drive out vs. a dribbler single.

For that matter, a perfect pass that bounces off a receiver's hand/chest/whatever that winds up being picked counts as an interception against the QB

Defender A blows through the LOS and causes the QB to hit the dirt (without having touched him) and Defender B comes in a second later touches the QB down while he's on the ground. Defender B gets the sack.

Looks like he touched it as it came down, it’s trajectory seems to change.
What am I missing? The punt settled inches shy of the goal line. Had the returner not picked it up the LOS would be inches from the goal line. Picking it up and trying to return it was a smart move (even though he didn't improve field position much).

I don’t think you are missing anything, it was a smart play even more so after touching it making it a live ball.

I think the prior poster thought it might run into the end zone for a touchback and had missed the prior touch.

Gotcha. Agreed, I think trying to return it was the right call regardless of whether he touched it as it sailed over his head.

Sure
What I was trying to do was separate distance the punt carried in the air from the post-bounce roll. The former is Indicative of the punter’s skill; the latter is about roll (and luck).

Which is why, to me, Ryan Allen had a better game in SB53 than Hekker. Hekker got extremely lucky on a couple of his punts, particularly on the SB record longest punt - it was actually a short punt that Edelman couldn't get upfield quickly enough to field. Whereas Allen's punts were all bombs and/or downed well inside the 20.

Apropos of nothing (though the Jimmy G and situation, Brady’s time off and now the Zach Wilson injury are all factoring in) - man what I wouldn’t give for a resurrection of those comical fake QB Facebook conversations from ~8-10 years ago. Nothing compared. There’s a new, worthy generation of QB personalities now - and even a few familiar faces from that era - to run it back and make it great.

I probably should've specified, but that's the exact scenario I was referring to. I was tempted to call it 'the Edelman,' but that would be a disservice to a great receiver I have huge respect for.

Too soon?

This hypothetical depends on identifying that player. What QB better than Cassel - none of whom would have played in the Pats system - would have been available Week 2?
I’ve often thought of what would have happened if Brett Farve was still on the farm after Brady got hurt in 2008 instead of on the NYJ.

I used to get to the classroom early, pull those up on the projector, and have my students act them out.

Veris, Tippett, Lippett?
Yup. 1989. Their best DL, LB, & CB. Basically ended their season before it started. They were coming off a 9-7 season and were heavily dependent on their D (their offense was . . . uninspiring— Grogan, Marc Wilson, corpse of Eason & Flutie @ QB. The glory days of John Stephens & Hart Lee Dykes. And amazingly both Stanley Morgan & Irving Fryar were on that team. Weird trip down memory lane).

Seahawks trade CB Ugo Amadi to Philly for WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside. Amadi is a decent player having a poor camp. With the two draft picks looking good, and the Justin Coleman signing, he was going to get squeezed out, so Pete and John managed to get something for him. Pete must not have a lot of faith that Eskridge is going to be back from his injuries and effective. Right now Marquis Goodwin is the WR3, Freddie Swain is meh and no one else has really stepped up, so JJ has a decent shot to make the team, which probably wasn't true in Philly with Smith, Brown, Watkins, Ward, and Pascal there and Raegor lurking as well.

The blue bean bag serves a purpose. It's the enforcement spot for fouls that occur during the kick. Throwing the bean bag where it's not warranted is a downgrade, similar to throwing a flag that is not warranted.

Same for field goal attempts, the blue bean bag marks where the ball is brought back to if the kick is missed.

There is no significance to the spot where the ball is punted.

Except to measure the actual length of the punt, which are measured differently than field goals.

Thanks, though, for the blue bag explanation.

Zach Wilson is going to miss 4-6 weeks. The Jets just cannot catch a break.

Sounds like best case scenario to me.

The 2 week portion of the 2-4 week initial timeline never made any sense considering they said he was going to have surgery.

Bone bruise and meniscus surgery has a near 0% chance of being a 2 week return to play, unless maybe the Super Bowl is in 2 weeks.

I agree. Worried it was a season-ender when saw it happen. Flacco is tearing up camp which has me super worried about the D.
