Also hilarious to get home field for the NLCS after not having it the first two rounds.

That has to be up there with the best single innings ever pitched given the situation, striking out all of Betts/Turner/Freeman on just 10 pitches.

Feels like, with the free agents leaving and the plan not working, it's time for the Dodgers to tear it down and go into a rebuild. Hey, I know a familiar franchise that would gladly take their expensive right-fielder off their hands...

Wow! A Padres-Phillies NLCS! That's gonna be fun. They both seem equally matched. The Padres will have home-field advantage, but I can see the Phillies being slightly healthier and more determined. So you never know...

I really, REALLY want the World Series to be either Guardians vs Padres, or Guardians vs Phillies. Seeing Tito return to the WS would be awesome, and I wouldn't mind if either the Padres or the Phillies won the pennant.

If either of those matchups turn out to be this year's, I have a feeling it'll be one of the greatest World Series of all time. All three of those teams seem equally matched and determined.

I'll bet a lot of us here are hoping for one of those matchups.

I will say though, I'm leaning towards Guardians vs Phillies. No offense to the Padres, but I want my second-favorite team (the Mariners) to win their first World Series title before the Padres do ;)

The only thing I don't like is that two of my least-favorite players will be squaring off: Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.
But the spin is that there’s a sizable chunk of Yankee fans who still think signing one or both of those two was somehow their birthright, so this matchup will stir up even more anger around that.

I got curious and tested out the matchup on WhatIfSports, with Nola and Musgrove starting Games 1 and 5, Wheeler and Darvish Games 2 and 6, Snell and Suarez Games 3 and 7, and Clevinger and Falter Game 4.

In the simulation, the Phillies took Game 1, Padres took Game 2, Padres Game 3, Phillies Game 4, Phillies Game 5, Padres Game 6, and Padres Game 7.

That was just a simulation. It will likely be different in real life. Either way, if both teams are healthy, it'll be very close. And if it's very close, that might give the AL pennant winner an advantage, since the NL team will probably be exhausted.

The 2013-2022 Dodgers are basically the 1995-2004 Braves - always in first place, always a great regular season team, but with only one title to show for all that. Not that that's bad. In any 10-game stretch, no fewer than 2/3 of MLB's teams WON'T win ANY championships, but still, when you're basically the best team in baseball year in and year out, and only win it all one time, that HAS to be considered a major disappointment for Dodger fans, I'd think.

Wow... 111 wins and don't even make the NLCS. Crazy. At least the 116-win Mariners made it to the ALCS (though to be fair, there's one more step in the process these days, but still).

Proving once again that "just getting to the playoffs and see what happens" isn't the worst plan.

I concur.
Last year's Braves come to mind. While they finished 1st in the NL west, they won 88 games I think?

What's the fewest games a team has won in a full season, and gone on to win it all?

Edit: That said, the Sox would have been in with 86 wins this year, but after watching these games, there's no way they belonged in the mix. Bullpen importance is amplified now, and the Sox would be overmatched by every single team.

Cardinals, right? Like 84 or something a decade or so ago?

(83, and it was 16 years ago!)

Philly and SD seem like well-matched opponents. Should be a good series. I think Philly might be the team of destiny, though.
In 2004, the Red Sox beat the MFY 4-3 in the ALCS (in fact, today is the 18th anniversary of the 19-8 game, setting the stage for the greatest four-day stretch in Red Sox history). That was, to some, the signature moment of destiny for the organization, even before the World Series sweep.

Last night was that moment for the Padres.

I was hoping someone would say this. I don't want to be hyperbolic, but last night was the most important victory in Padres history for a generation. Maybe ever.

Fuck LA.

Gotta admit I was pulling for the Dodgers: Betts, Roberts, and the only player in MLB from Wyoming (Nimmo). Plus the hatred towards Machado.

But as the series went on, I found myself ambivalent, and kinda rooting for the Padres and their fans. There was some great energy in the crowd tonight, and that's good for baseball.

The "Beat LA" chants helped.

The 2006 Cardinals went 83-78, which is the worst ever record for a World Series champion. The 1973 Mets (the first team I remember rooting for) went 82-79 to be the worst team ever to reach the World Series.

It makes it even more remarkable to consider that the Red Sox won four titles in a span of 15 seasons.

Tim Hill stranding the second and third, one out situation in the seventh after a run had already come in to score is the retrospective turning point.

Pretty awesome stuff. The vigor and glee in which the San Diegans chanted "Beat LA" was heartwarming. Only Machado and his curb stompable face kept the outcome from being perfect.

100 wins used to be a gold standard. Now it’s nice, but that’s it. I mean, the Twins were a 101 game winner in 2019. Is it the unbalanced schedule? The tanking? Or the way teams are built with qualifying in mind rather than winning playoff series?

I really don’t know. Sox were 100 standard once in my life. Once. And that was a dominant team.

Machado aside, it’s hard not to pull for the Padres and their fans. San Diego has never won anything (unless you count indoor soccer or the ‘63 AFL title). And they’ve lost not just games but franchises to LA. That city is, um, due.
