We’re at the point where the results of the groups stage are coming into focus. Chelsea are through with their win over Salzburg, and will win the group if Milan wins or draws against Zagreb later today. Barca needs a miracle to advance, starting the week three points behind Inter (who holds the head to head tiebreaker) for the second spot in the group and facing Bayern tomorrow. What other games are people looking at this week?

Liverpool are through with a point tomorrow.

The bigger value in that is getting to rest & rotate for the final match against Napoli.

Too bad Rafa dropped out of the Selecao this close to the World Cup. With Diogo Jota suffering his leg injury, he would have received quality minutes in Qatar.

Benfica 4-3 over Juve, which means Benfica are through and Juve are currently tied with Maccabi Haifa at 3 points apiece in the group, and have to play PSG (also through) next week, with the Europa League spot on the line. What a mess in Turin these days.

Diogo Costa (the Porto keeper, not the similarly named Diego Costa currently at Wolves) had saved the last two penalties taken against him in the Champions League. Club Brugge gets awarded a penalty and he saves it for what looks like a third consecutive save, but Brugge get another chance as the ref calls Porto for encroachment. Brugge sends out a different player to retake the penalty, and Costa saves it again. Just wild.

Absolute howler from Hugo Lloris to have Sporting go up 1-0. To my untrained eye, that looked like a good piece of scouting by Sporting's coaching staff. Spurs have been very good in recent weeks in pressing high, and it's usually when Bentancur reacts to a trigger and jumps high as well.

Sporting won a free kick in their half, seemed to bait Spurs and Bentancur into the press, played a VERY slick ball to split the 2 CMFs, and then various Spurs players weren't able to disrupt the attack. All that said, a good but slow low shot to the far post from well outside the box beat Hugo.

I can dismiss Hugo's lack on skill on the ball when he's stopping every shot in sight like he was during the MAN U game, but if that's slipping, Hugo needs to sit for a bit.

Liverpool had wrestled control back of the match after half an hour and then allowed a 4 v 2 counter that Ajax wasted. Oooffff

Spurs are a real snooze right now. I can't go with the people screaming for Conte to go, that's wild, but they're absolutely sleepwalking and getting the results to match it.

Great ball by the Captain & the wonderful first time finish.

Lovely goal. Henderson with the seal out and shoulder dip then the outside of the foot pass. Salah with clinical finish.

It's so hard to determine whether Conte is doing the right thing by running the best V into the ground (Dier, Hoj, Bentancur, Son, Kane) and getting results, or if he needs to start rotating. I mean, Spurs fandom is fully crazy--the club is sitting 3rd in the EPL and still in a good position to make it out of the UCL group (at least for now), but it does feel like they're stuck in low gear.

Conte may not rate Spence, Gil, Bissouma, or Skipp, but while Deki is out, Conte probably needs to be a bit more risk tolerant with Spence and Gil. Then again, Conte is on the record as valuing draws highly, and he's a bawse, so what do I know.

Maybe the shithousing is worth it?

I think Nunez is a huge talent and is worth the shithousing for sure, I'd just like to see that coached out of his game. He's incredibly gifted and should hone those skills, not his acting chops. I'd like a Golden Boot, not an Oscar.

We've got the fun version of a Conte team for the second half. I hope they get something out of it

Kind of feel for Kenneth Taylor. Gets booed when he comes on bc he's replacing Brobbey, is admittedly absolutely awful in his cameo, and gets whistled for every poor touch.

Timber with quite the dribble there for a CB. I’m sure Pep got excited.

Spurs just got an offside that came off a defender, this looks like a total fuckup unless I am confused.

Penalty saved, then Saul hits the bar, then blocked on the line.

Atlético are out.

Atletico ending absolute insanity. Ended 2-2 then VAR called down for a handball on the final corner. Arms were tucked but it hit his shoulder. Not a penalty IMO

Penalty saved, follow up hit crossbar, follow up 2 blocked over cross bar. Wow that was nuts

It appears that I am confused but the rule is also now garbage? I dunno. Baffling shit that nobody ever would have called in the pre-VAR era.

My biggest complaint about VAR is the time allowed for review. Once the video is queued up, there needs to be a 30-60 second timer and a decision needs to be announced promptly thereafter. Someone else said it in the VAR thread, but there's a disconnect between the threshold that VAR uses (clear and obvious error), which is a good high bar, and the fact that these poor guys are being asked to Zapruder this shit.

It's been said before, but video review offers the illusion that we can officiate sports perfectly. We can't yet. That should be reflected in how this all works in practice.

I recall this came up last year in the UCL final, I think what they said then was if the ball comes off the defender it only negates the offsides if the defender deliberately plays it, if it’s a quick deflection off the defender it can still be offsides. Could be wrong though.

Edit: Here was the explanation from the disallowed Benzema goal:

Can someone explain to me why they need to draw a subjective (in where they place it) fake line when they can just judge off of the front of the 6 yard line?

How can anything "clear and obvious" take 4.5 minutes of video arts & crafts to determine?

If Offside calls that decide matches are going to determine UCL advancement then they greatly need to increase the number of cameras around the stadium and at the least need to have spider cam following the forward most players on the attack. It's insane that they used that angle to make that kind of subjective call.

How do you know?. The technology can’t detect anything at these margins.
You're right, I should rephrase and say that on those grounds the decision was questionable to the same degree that every close offside VAR decision is questionable.

When I said technically correct, I was mainly referring to other aspects of the situation. Most of the outrage I see about this on Twitter is not about where the lines were drawn but instead about the ball moving backward and hitting a Sporting player before going to Kane, neither of which actually matter.

I agree that the law was applied correctly if Kane was in an offside position.

I see absolutely no conclusive evidence that he was in an offside position.

And I fucking hate Harry Kane and Spurs.

Atlético are out.
What a disappointing Champions League year for Atletico. But it may be for the best. Atleti can point to the lack of Champions League revenue to sell a few players, reinvest these dollars, and use the core of promising young players to give the team a spark next year.
