Mallory is probably in on all of them, but if they ever left her off a Cat People pod, they would deserve to lose her.
She likely is, and ugh for the reason she'd be on all four.

Love Mal in general, but her horniness is in a very 12-year-old / 40-year-old-virgin 'bags of sand; sort of way. It's off-putting at best for me, and more creepy than anything else.

Oh yeah for sure. DePalma is coming and that would be a good guess.
Has to be Body Heat. Bill has a thing for Kathleen Turner and it's a chance to memorialize William Hurt.

Edit: Duh. Which isn't DePalma.

He doesn't want people to watch the movie and have it fresh in their minds because it will make Simmons look dumber.

And then by the time you listen to the podcast, you probably don't want to bother watching he movie after.

I'm starting to get a little worried about you, man. I hope you're ok. I hope you can listen to the Gigolo podcast with a pure heart and an open mind because it is one of our boy Simmon's best performances.

Huh, despite him saying earlier in the podcast that they decided that Cruising *isn't* a Rewatchable, apparently Cruising is next week. Good job being verbally consistent.

So now I guess Dressed to Kill is out, and it's Gigolo / Cruising / Body Heat / Blow Out.

Didn’t Hurt turn out to be a bit of a scumbag?
It sure seems that way. "Memorialize" wasn't a great word choice by me. Probably should have said that the choice of Body Heat as a rewatchable would provide an opportunity to discuss Hurt, who was a huge presence in the 1980s, and his problematic legacy.

Nah I was unclear. I didn’t know if you were making (the probably reasonable) assumption that Bill wouldn’t necessarily handle the discussion well.

No way.

I am clear eyed about this. Simmons has turned into what he used to mock in 2001. An old, out of touch idiot falling back on tics and crutches, without any thought or analysis. Rewatchables is still awesome even when Willy is on it, but his BS podcast is repetitive dreck now. And it's worse because Simmons has surrounded himself with yes men and women who will never question his idiocy.

And that's fine. The truth is, people get old and cannae hack it anymore. That's it, that's my theory. Beautifully fahkin' illustrated.

I would say The Rewatchables, generally, is Name of the Rose (if we're keeping with Simmons - as- Connery).

I wonder what his Untouchables will be.

American Gigolo episode was very funny. I thought Mallory might be too much for these movies but she was pretty good here and you could feel Sean’s discomfort at a few points. I’m looking forward to the rest of the month

Also I had never seen it (born in ‘87) and it was really good. The first half I was wondering why this wasn’t considered a must watch classic but the rest kind of falls off but still a decent movie with an interesting vibe.

Finally, did you guys know Bill had screeners to the first TWO episodes of White Lotus? He brought it up here, brought it up with Sal on Guess the Lines, and the Presitige TV podcast about episode was almost unlistenable because he kept bringing up stuff nobody but him has seen. I mostly still enjoy Bill but stuff like this is obnoxious

Do you think he gets the screeners because he will talk about them? That’s one of the points of screeners, right? I don’t watch the show so just ignored. I can see how this could be an annoyance but I thought Bill was on his A game for this episode.

I mean they all get screeners right? So they can watch and record ahead of time and release a podcast about the episode right when the show comes out for us. Joanna mentioned that she had only seen 1 before she recorded Prestige because she’s a pro and didn’t want to risk saying something. I know Chris and Andy do the same thing on The Watch. Bill has brought up that he’s seen 2 episodes multiple times this week and even here spoiled a little about episode 1 that Sean and Mallory hadn’t seen when they recorded. Not a huge deal but it’s been more annoying than usual this week. Maybe just because I watch White Lotus

Re: American Gigolo and Bill

It strikes me as perfectly "Bill" that he thinks living in New York City between 78-80 would be his ideal time/place to live. First of all, the lower east side music scene he references had mostly moved to the mainstream at that point, so you wouldn't be seeing the Ramones at CBGB much (if at all) anymore; same for Talking Heads and Blondie (that era was more mid 70s). Plus, virtually everything else about living in NYC in that era as anything other than a wealthy person or an actual talented musician/artist would have been really unpleasant. Crime was rampant, the subways basically unusable, crack was everywhere... The idea that Simmons would just flit around between the Bowery and Yankee Stadium in some euphoric haze is just too much. Oh, as is the idea that he'd be out enjoying the disco scene.

Also he calls L.A. a "blank slate" and somehow undiscovered territory in 1980 which is absurd; it had been the center of the TV and popular music universe throughout most of the 70s!

I think the cocaine was supposed to still be really good in 78-80. Thought crack epidemic was close to this time period but later.

edit: none of this is from actually knowing as I was born around this time so only info I have is from listening to cocaine users on podcasts.

Crack was definitely more in the 80s. But NYC was a shithole in many spots the 70s and 80s. You would not go an inch below 14th street or above 96th street, ever. If you went east past 1st Avenue downtown, to Alphabet City, you would likely be killed. If you found yourself on 48th and 9th Avenue, you would run away as fast as you can or else Hells Kitchen (appropriately named then, not now) would have its way with you.

Simmons in NYC in 1979 is one of the funniest visuals in history, because unless he lived on Park Avenue and 66th Street, he would stay for one hour, tops.

I finally finished watching American Gigolo and I thought it was pretty boring. I dunno, maybe a movie dealing with sex, vanity, and high society (and one that dips its feet into gay culture) just isn't as juicy as it was in 1980. And the whole murder plot just seems half-baked. What? He murders Leon and the cops literally say "Eh...we don't care, even though we want to put him in jail."

Two good pods back-to-back. Wesley is a crucial part of the Cruising episode.

That said, Bill did pronounce vapid “vay-pid” on the American Gigolo pod. I just can’t figure him out. Maybe I’d mispronounce common words if you stuck a mic in my face for several hours a week. Dunno.

It still bugs me that Bill never includes Jack Nicholson whenever he lists his little Big Actor Power Rankings or whatever. Someone else finally referenced him during the discussion but it’s bizarre. By 1980, Nicholson had more Oscar nominations than either DeNiro or Pacino, and the same number of wins as Pacino. He was just as big a Hollywood figure as anyone, but in Bill’s world he’s like Richard Dreyfus or something.

Bill always struck me as the kinda guy who doesn’t like cool, good looking guys who are also talented. Does he ever go hard for Pitt or Clooney either?

He would marry Leo.

edit: he loves The Verdict, also. He doesn’t mention Robert Redford enough for me to think he has good taste in men.

Not the question. Very good actor. Very popular. One of the best lives ever lived, but is he cool? One night out before you die - Prime Jack or prime Leo?
What I mean is, this is a no brainet for me, but I don’t think I represent what the average person would say

Prime Leo, say from late 20's to early 40's (say from Catch Me if You Can up through the Revenant) seems alright to me. His early career not so much. Like a group of early 20 somethings running around calling themselves the pussy posse screams giant douchebag to me.

I don't know much about Jack other than looking pretty cool sitting courtside at Lakers games and the front row of awards shows, but I can't imagine he was a boring hang at all. Probably having fun either way.

Wesley Morris was absolutely insufferable on the “Movies” pod with Bill and Sean. Endless rambles with no point whatsoever.

Great movie. They said they would include Pauline Kael's takes more but I haven't heard her mentioned much and she was famously a huge fan of this one.
I did laugh out loud when Bill said he had a hard time coming up with movies where it shows people who are good at their jobs.

If you want to drag on Bill, Wesley's response to the 'Louis Malle' pronunciation is the highlight here.

I just finished this and have to disagree. Wesley's point seems to be that he accepts that the death of his paradigm of cinema is unstoppable and he is going to let you know that he is saddened by this and it matters to him. It was a cathartic Lion in Winter appearance by him.

Ha, I actually heard it as not a pronunciation issue but the fact that Bill didn't seem to know who he was.
They finally did mention the Kael review deep into the pod which is in her greatest hits of columns.
I think 4 people is too many. Anything over 3 main speakers is a traffic jam and this pod suffered because of it.

Chris is really funny.

i don't think Wesley comes back after this run though. I thought Bill was pretty irked and the correciton of louis malle's name may be pushing Wesley in the Greenwald zone

If Wesley gets banished for that, he and Bill never had much of a relationship. I just wished one of three dropped on Bill that Malle was married to Candice Bergen until he died.

I think four can work on that pod, but Wesley can make it tough, because he often speaks in paragraphs when a sentence will do. I don't think it was Bill irked as much by the correction as it was by him trying to keep the pod on track. Chris just did The Big Picture 1997 Movie Draft, and he had a line about he can see in Sean's and Bill's eyes when they hit the point where they just want to wrap it up.

Sorry if i wasn't clear--I think Bill was irked with Wesley for pontificating, trying to do things out of order, etc--the Malle thing was just hte icing on the cake. CR's you're a guest comment was kind of made I think to lighten the mood but also maybe to encourage Wesley to get with the program a bit more. The show is "join Bill in having a lighthearted discussion of cool movies" not " give loooong if great answers on what is the key to cinema"

Or it’s four friends that are giving each other shit. Like all the other examples of tension cited in this thread. The “you’re a guest” comment was a joke about their love of all things Beranthal as Wesley was about to criticize him.

Right. It really feels to me like people are projecting all sorts of undercurrents that just aren't there (e.g. the grand insult of "still cranking out The Watch?", dislike of Greenwald, etc).

Maybe Im wrong but I really do thanks that Bill was annoyed with Wesley. Let’s see how long after naughty November ends before we see him again and if it’s not too long then I’ll readily stand corrected
