Yeah, this sucks but I’m okay not paying that. Screw the Padres, though, of course.

Correa please.
Correa's 28. Considering what Turner and Xander netted in terms of length of contract, will the Red Sox be comfortable paying him until he's 38? Don't see it. 8 years, however? Absolutely. I also envision him moving to 3B seamlessly, as he has that thicker, AROD-type build. As a plus, he seems to have a feisty, chip-on-the-shoulder personality that you love -- if he's on your team.

I still think it's more likely that another organization acquiesces and gives up the decade-long contract to him, making Swanson a more reasonable addition.

Wonder if the Sox had higher AAV but less years. Like 6/180

If they do turn to Correa, it will be for a contract larger than what Bogey got
Sure but Correa is running out of suitors. I assume first team with big years to $36 million gets him since that would give him the highest salary among shortstops. 9/$326 would make him the highest paid shortstop ever and sounds almost reasonable right now.

Why aren't they going to play 11 years? When has a player ever retired leaving that much money on the table?
I use the operative "play", much like Dustin Pedroia was effectively done playing a number of years before he officially retired. The player will certainly collect the checks while rehabbing and attempting to come back, but that cycle could be far short of 11 years from now.

we'll never know for sure, but i wonder what the red sox final offer was
To get 11/280 Boras had to have a second team. Or at least give the appearance of a bidding war. I don’t think even Boras gets that deal unless there is significant interest from at least one other team in the mid 200s. Maybe a third team came forward. But I have to believe the Sox were in there with a number in the 200s or I just don’t see how the Padres can be leveraged to pay what they did,

You offer him the Semien deal last offseason and I'm like 90% sure he would've signed. Now this.

I'd say my only disappointment from the Sox FO is their final offer was not $200 mil or slightly north. Buuuut it wouldn't have mattered, so whatever...

Or, they’re just so bad the last few years they get released and paid anyways.

Cubs and/or Giants?
Possible. Or maybe Boras really is just a wizard and got the Padres to go crazy and bid against themselves. The solace here is that whatever the Sox offered it wouldn’t have mattered.

As I said in the Trea Turner thread, neither player is going to play 11 years. This is a lifetime contract with the years serving to depress the real AAV. It's the total dollars (and NPV) that are most relevant, not years.
My basic accounting sucks, so what is the NPV on 280 mil over 11 years?

If they do turn to Correa, it will be for a contract larger than what Bogey got
Certainly it should be: he's younger, a comparable batter and a better fielder.

They better sign Devers.
This. It's time for the Front Office to capitulate and give the man his money.

Bring on Elvis Andrus or Jose Iglesias to be a 2 year stop gap until Marcelo Mayer is ready.
I'm up for some more Iggy as a bridge to Mayer.

I mean they probably offered him something like 6-180 or 7-200, hard to be disapointed in that, no one saw this Padres offer coming, the Padres probably didn't even see it coming 24 hours ago when they were all in on Judge.

If the Sox were under $200M, I doubt they went $30M AAV. So, did they go 7/189 or something similar?

So our IF is Correa, Iglesias/Mayer, Story and Casas?

This is what happens when you treat franchise players like names on a spreadsheet. Can’t wait for this team to lowball Casas & Mayer in 2030.

I hope they don't. Just concentrate on Devers and wait on Mayers now. Bring on Iggy and his glove.
Iglesias grades as an average defensive shortstop at best these days. I don't think this is the route.

Signing Correa now means you might be able to trade one of Story or Arroyo, who both look like steals in this market.

So teams should just accept they will have 25+ million for no production 10 years out? No matter how high the luxury tax line goes, that's rough business

Bogey at 11 years is pretty insane. But I'd hate to see how Correa holds up physically, especially as a guy who has back issues, right? Or a history of back ailments?

I'd look at Swanson (within reason), but I think that, again, the front office did things in reverse order. You sign guys when you have the ability to sign them sure, but the bullpen pieces, especially Jansen look a little strange now that your all-star shortstop is gone, and a placeholder is possibly going to fill the void.

I'm surprised people think we'll be real players for Correa. I say this not as someone who believes the ownership group is "cheap" or that Bloom is incompetent. I say this as someone with some evidence that this front office does not want to offer $250M - $350M contracts to anyone.

Yep. I don't really want any part of Correa unless it's a steep discount, which in this market....doesn't look promising.
