That’s interesting to me. When Bennett was a kid, he dreamed of winning a championship. Pretty unusual. Really special.

In between the semifinal games, I posted that I would put the over/under for Georgia's combined winning margin in the two games at 50. Someone mocked me when OSU was up a bunch, but they got there in the end (pending garbage time).

SEC hegemony remains a big problem for this sport. Taking nothing away for Georgia. They’re a wagon. But Having 2 or 3 programs, from the same region of the country, dividing up the championships year after year has made this event a bore. Which is a pity, because the regular season is often so wildly entertaining.

As a Patriots fan, I can't claim to want parity as opposed to watching the highest quality of football no matter how few teams can truly win the title. But having fewer programs that can realistically win a championship in CFB going into the season than NFL teams that can win a Super Bowl seems backwards.

I will raise my hand and take my L. I didn't think Georgia was this good.

Yup, it’s an issue. An SEC team has either won or played in the national title game every year since 2015. The conference is on a four year winning streak and the closest game was Georgia winning by two TD against Bama last season.

Producing a title-winning football team for the state U in this part of the country is the most important endeavor of the state and its people, on all levels, economic, legislative, educational, social.

In essence the entire state is a financing mechanism and delivery system for this football team.

Nothing else is going to compete.

So Purdue's record for biggest losing margin in a college bowl game only lasted two weeks (or does this not count as a bowl game?).

Committee simply failed again in picking 4 best teams. Amazing they can’t do their one job. This really should (thankfully) kill the smaller schools getting much run going forward.

Eh, you're letting off the choking Wolverines by pointing at the committee. While OSU apparently was the toughest matchup for Georgia, they had gotten smoked by UM in Columbus. So all signs pointed to setting up a UM-Georgia championship game based on the semifinal matchups.

Hard to fault the committee for choosing a team that won in the semis. Looking forward to the expanded playoffs though.

The four best teams were probably Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, and Ohio State. But Alabama blew their season, and TCU earned a spot in the top 4. Then Michigan blew it against TCU and Ohio State blew it against Georgia.

It would have been great, of course, if the Georgia-OSU game was the national championship game, given how that turned out.

The four best teams were Georgia, Alabama, a healthy Tennessee (with Hooker), and either Ohio State or LSU

Because Michigan choked
QFT

At what point does Georgia go into victory formation?
That would've been something, going into V formation for the whole 4Q

Georgia got the over by itself.
Amazing

QFT, Michigan would've given UGA a much tougher game.

Agreed. My position on the 4-team playoff is you pick the most deserving 4 teams, not necessarily the best 4 teams. Bama is probably one of the best 4 teams, but they didn't deserve to play in the semis. Michigan is a better team than TCU, but they didn't deserve to play in the Final. You always need to address the SEC dominance, but my preference has always been to give a lot of deference to conference champs and resume (i.e., TCU over Bama this season). More generally, w/r/t years past I'd prefer to see more PAC12 and Big12 conference champs make it over 2 ES EE SEE teams.

I don't understand why the Cofopo was so reluctant to go from 2 --> 4, but now is going from 4 --> 12 when 8 seems like a perfect number to me. 5 Conf. Champs + 3 bids. QFs at higher ranked team's field. No byes. But of course, it's the NCAA so nothing ever really makes much sense.

To be pedantic, the NCAA crowns its champion with a 24 team tournament. The CFP went with 12 not because it's a better format or product than 8, but because it was the deal that could be struck. This wasn't an exercise in deciding the best format, it was a negotiation amongst the parties to make sure their interests were protected and advanced.

A 5+3 format really helps the Power 5 conferences whose champ is sometimes left out -- Pac 12, Big 12, ACC. But it doesn't add a ton of value for anyone else. SEC and Big 10 place two teams on a good year already. Notre Dame already gets in with a good year. Group of 5 doesn't feel like they're helped without a sixth guaranteed conference champ.

12 teams still gives the ACC, Big 12, and Pac 12 their basically guaranteed spot, but it also allows more access for the 3rd and 4th place SEC and Big 10 teams. And the Group of 5 conferences have clear access point. It works better for more parties.

I just took a look at Georgia‘s schedule for next season. Maybe the easiest schedule for a defending champ I’ve ever seen. At Knoxville in late November will be their only real tough game. They are set up well to get back to the playoff.

4 home games, and 2 will have more Georgia fans there than the “home” school (Vandy and GaTech)

Sad news from Athens. A UGA player, OL Devin Willock, and a staff member killed in a car accident. Yesterday was the parade on campus. Two other members of the program hospitalized in stable condition.
