Matt Barnes DFA'd, traded to Marlins for LH reliever Bleier

Is there a reason why they’d DFA him now in anticipation of making a trade, instead of just waiting a couple days to trade him and then adding Duval to the 40?
It's early morning in Korea and they're waiting for Kim to wake up to be told the news that he's been dealt from SD to Boston?

Wondering the same. If it's a trade, I'd guess it's firmly locked in, cause a DFA in advance would seem like terrible leverage.

Pitchforks, torches, get them ready. We have no idea yet what is going on, but let's get ready to burn down the city.

We'll know in about a week what's happening. Surprising, for sure, but I'm guessing there is another move attached to this (trade, as others have already stated), but I don't know. We don't need a Bloom or Henry effigy hanging in the Commons, folks.

Just being preemptive based on numerous threads so far this offseason.

I’ll gladly be proven wrong when a trade happens but this is the same response everyone had when Hosmer was DFA’d. And that trade never happened.

Everybody's favorite rando on Twitter claims the Angels are engaged with the Red Sox on Barnes:

"The Angels are talking with the Red Sox regarding RP Matt Barnes who was DFA’d earlier today."
This guy is throw crap at a fan and eventually something sticks. He’s right like 1/10 times. Not a slight at you, I’m just griping about the twitter insiders being way off base this off-season.

The weirdest thing about this is that it was Bloom who gave Barnes the extension in the first place. It’s not like Barnes is a holdover from the DD days that Bloom never thought highly of.

Hard to evaluate Barnes’ true talent level. The evidence strongly suggests he was a sticky stuff guy.

Is there any chance that the Sox are worried about the impact of the pitch clock on Barnes? Not sure what the data says, but seems like he takes forever between pitches and maybe they don't think he will respond well to the new rules.

If they were that worried about the pitch clock they wouldn't have signed Jansen.

Eh, he was fine at the end of last year. I think he’s just inconsistent- a reliever who can be dominant but also can be awful; he has a career ERA of 4, he is what he is. Dumping him in late January is kind of weird though; it’s hard to imagine that this is part of some grand plan, isn’t it?

This move isn't in line with re-evaluating a sticky stuff situation, I'd say.

Getting ahead of a PED finding could be a possibility though.

Brasier is absolutely garbage and any team who cuts a better pitcher who isn’t expensive or a head case to depend more on him just adds another mom to tge fire this FO is out to lunch.

Right. As referenced above, this may be a flexibility thing, and I do believe Chaim’s ideal bullpen is a Rays-style approach with a couple of anchors and then the ability to churn through cheap guys until you hit on a Schreiber or two.

The issue is really just that Barnes started to suck, not that he was expensive.

That said, it feels too cutesy to me and I don’t understand the DFA decisions in general this offseason.

He grew up a Yankees fan. The only way this ends is wonderboy Blake magically turns his curveball into 4000rpms and he wins closer of the year as they win the WS.

I mean it's 280 characters maximum and it still gets the point across. He's been wildly inconsistent for the past two years.
In the meantime, James Paxton, who's only pitched in one game in the last two years, and a grand total of six since 2020 is still in the conversation about being a contributor in 2023. If I'm ever in attendance at an event where Bloom is introduced, I wouldn't boo him, but I'd definitely withhold any polite applause.

Bloom mentions several times wanting to "wait until the DFA process plays out" before he comments further. Seems to suggest more is to come

While Brasier is a fire-starter I think you should leave the moms out of this dumpster.

Talking about Barnes yielding a roster spot rather than Ort or Brasier misses the mark. This is either a chemistry move, or Bloom thinks he’s going to find someone to take Barnes and pick up part of his salary (or, less likely, give us a lottery-ticket prospect for him). We'll know more in a couple weeks.
