Wasn't listening closely, but I think they just Benny Hill'd the Tigers some runs.
A few guys around me saw I was scoring the game and asked how that play should get scored. I just wrote “LOL” and marked the runs.

Another observation from behind home plate. NP was somewhat inconsistent with his curve today but had some really nasty 12-6 hooks, especially in the 3rd. It was easy to see he was cooked in the 4th though. He still has a ways to go until he gets his legs under him again and I’m starting to wonder if that will happen by the start of the season.
Circling back to my above observations on Casas, you can tell that he has a plan when he’s in the box. He’s thinking through his at-bat. He was the anti-Dalbec today, who just flailed.

Assuming Turner makes it back for opening day and no further injuries what is Dalbec’s path to making the opening day roster. Can you have a utility infielder who doesn’t appear to be even league average at any infield position? I guess he is certainly helping himself by showing he is not a circus act at short, but is this the assumption that they are showcasing his versatility to the trade market or are they legitimately trying to see if he is capable of handing a utility infield roster spot?

KKKluber. strikes out the side.
I think Flemming is flying solo. I hope someone else is just caught in traffic or something.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
So what do we think we have in Kluber?

He was last great in 2018, but was derailed by injury. Last year he was healthy, but the results were not impressive.

They just said something from the booth that I'm not sure is true, namely that catchers will be throwing to first more now that the pitcher throws are limited. I thought I heard somewhere that catcher throws are counted too.

I am not certain, but I thought the rule talks in terms of "pitcher disengagements." That suggests that catcher throws are not counted, but I am not a Manfred man.

Whitlock has a 1-2-3 6th. No mention of him getting hurt, but Flemming was distracted by interviewing Kluber, so who knows; he might have been hauled off in a stretcher.

I haven's seen or heard of Kenley Jansen this Spring.

Haven't really been following all the box scores but is he pitching for the Netherlands?

Nope. He last pitched for the Sox on Saturday. He was potentially going to join the Netherlands if they advanced to the quarters or semis, but since they did not, he's staying in camp. I imagine he'll pitch tomorrow or Friday.

No, catcher throws aren't counted but they can easily sail into the outfield. I do think that they'll be increased a bit this year though.

I agree, and I think two things are going to contribute to it, and they go hand in hand.

One is that catchers are going to be expected to take a much more active role in controlling the running game.

Two is that I think you will see much more aggressive leads, and especially secondary leads, giving catchers more legitimate opportunities for pickoffs.

I'm watching the game now, and he looks pretty great. The command is just so good. I love these front door two-seamers.

Why don't you think his results were impressive in 2022? The ERA was pedestrian, but I see 31 starts, 164 IP, 139 K against 21 BB, and a 3.60ish FIP and 3.90ish xFIP. If he gets better cooperation from BABIP and the strand rate than he had in 2022, he could be excellent. He was in the top-30 of qualified pitchers in fWAR! Not saying he's his old CYA self, but I see a lot to like in that line.

Kluber's changeup looked very spicy from what I saw. Wonder if there's any talk of him upping its usage this year. He basically only throws it vs. lefties. Thing was pretty damn nasty last year (19.7 SwStr%, .223 wOBAA vs. L). He threw it about 21% of the time vs. L. Wonder if we could tick that up into the high 20s?
