Some of you guys have fantastic fucking stories man.
I hope this is a good one.
Mark Jackson played at York in Toronto and I played at U of S. We were better, but we had some contentious games. Some of it the animosity was sadly around race, Mark and his teammates accused our team of racism because we had only one black player. Our coach didn't recruit outside our province and there simply were almost no black people living here. After two brawls in the same year coaches and players had a peacemaking discussion at the hotel, explaining our demographics, etc. We also said since we had been beating them the accusation seemed hollow. To his credit Mark later visited Sask and was a pretty nice guy saying he understood us better, etc. I can't really say anything bad about him, all things considered.
Too much background, but the story is this.
The day after that meeting, after a brawl, the two teams were walking past each other in the airport, and it was pretty tense. The York team had this white kid that was certainly the inspiration for "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" who was the typical 12th guy at the end of the bench talking the most shit and starting the most trouble. He was wearing pants that were too short. As we passed one of my teammates said a 1940ish putdown "Your shoes should have a party and invite your pants down" and all hell broke loose. It was mostly verbal, but some shoving, etc, the two coaches came around the corner chatting like best friends. Anyway the hilarity of explaining the insult that started it all was off the charts.
"he said what?"
"Shoes have a party?"
"You see if you have a party you invite the people upstairs..."
"Look at his pants"
"Yeah man those pants are too short"
"I am not having a party"
"No it's a metaphor"
"No Personification"
"Personification is a metaphor"
"Oh yeah you're right"
"Yo dawg my pants ain't short"
"Yeah they are"
"They are like capris"
"Yeah like a chick, totally like a chick"
(Fly guy begins to fight with his teammates)
etc
It ended with Mark Jones showing the upside of his verbal abilities by dissecting the joke for his dimwitted teammate.
