Joe said he was happy with the strategy but the execution was lacking. If you’re Joe, what do you say to the team?
Maybe he'll call his jujitsu guy and get beat up to feel again.

Agree that MIA was encouraging 1 on 1 and then it looked to me that MIA would send late help and the BOS players wouldn't/couldn't find the open guy. Hopefully they'll figure this out and change. But definitely not enough ball movement.heat defensive plan was to allow good one on one matchups and hope they could defend them. Took away Celtics passing. And celts fell for it
I'm pretty sure Spoelstra wasn't available. I mean the Cs could have hired Budenholzer - he has a ring and is experienced. You think that would have been better?sure but the coach’s job is to optimize the players - does anyone disagree that we sweep with Spoelstra?
why on earth would you pair an unproven coach with an elite roster whose stars, if anything, need help getting over the hump to get a ring!?
I mean it should be. Spo is a good coach, and as such he knows the only way his team can win is how they beat a bunch of teams last year.... launch as many 3s as possible and hope to shoot a high percent. Miami has literally no other route to a win.it won’t be the same plan next game. That’s why Spo is best coach in the league.
See the 2008 Celtics.Everyone should, this team had all the exact same problems under Ime, and Brad.....
also, way fewer teams sweep any series than you think, Sixers had the only 1st round sweep last year, in fact the last time there was more than 1 sweep in the 1st round was 2019-20.
This is spot on, they have these stretches where they go under every screen and overhelp off 3-point shooters and it's been driving my nuts since Brad was the coach.Yeah people liked to say last year’s Caleb Martin outburst was just random variance like tonight’s hot shooting maybe but the reality of last seasons series was they didn’t give half a damn to defend the perimeter and guys had open gym looks left and right. 53% doesn’t happen by accident.
They didn't lay eggs against vastly inferior opponents at home though. To not match the other team's intensity at home is concerning because we saw the exact same shit last year. It's perplexing.See the 2008 Celtics.
AgreedCalling it now: The Heat won’t win another game this series.
You called him a tool and a whack job.. what are we in high school? No? I mean the guy is a fucking nut. I don’t mind him and I think he’s a pretty good coach. He’s also a major fucking weirdo. I mean I think he’d agree with that to be honest.
Also it’s really hard to get around a screen that’s always moving outThis is spot on, they have these stretches where they go under every screen and overhelp off 3-point shooters and it's been driving my nuts since Brad was the coach.

The Celtics would get swept by Denver. Maybe take one game due to a hot shooting night. But they have no chance if it’s the Nuggets in the NBA Finals. Zero.
So basically if we get a Celtics-Nuggets Finals, we’ll never hear from him again because he’ll scrape together every cent he can raise, put it all on Denver, and retire.KOC, gamethreading.

Yeah, every time I try to console myself by thinking about the Game 7s in 2008, I remember that they always held serve at home. You just can’t lose to weaker teams at home. They didn't lay eggs against vastly inferior opponents at home though. To not match the other team's intensity at home is concerning because we saw the exact same shit last year. It's perplexing.
Where is the S&P closing at the end of the month? That's the information we all need.It won’t be a problem. They won’t be getting anywhere near the finals.
”We need to play better before the playoffs start”If you’re Joe, what do you say to the team?
I feel like the first sentence of this post was probably written last year too. We kept thinking these guys would pull their heads out of their asses long enough to beat a clearly inferior team that was lucky to even make the playoffs and then they didn't.Obviously they’ll win the series but two games in and we already have our first odd effort. Refused to close out to shooters all night, played at an extremely slow pace, especially when down late, and tried to go 1 on 1 matchup hunting instead of running offense. We all saw it but apparently they just couldn’t adjust? What the fuck
The Cs lose one game and suddenly every prophetic troll comes outWhere is the S&P closing at the end of the month? That's the information we all need.
Cool.. that’s probably how they won all those games in the regular season tooI still expect the Cs to get to the Finals, with a few dings. But if they do get there it will be their exceptional skills and depth making up for a lazy, la di da undisciplined approach. And a not ready for prime time coach.
Honest question…you don’t understand why people are disappointed after tonight? I mean, these are all pretty reasonable critiques and you’re responding to them like they’re Eddie Jurak coming off of a bender complaining about a random Tuesday night game against Atlanta.Cool.. that’s probably how they won all those games in the regular season too
In fairness, that is what makes them the worst team in the playoffs. I believe they're a middle of the pack team with those two healthy. And who were without their best player and their third best player.
If only it was just against the Heat, but it's not. They've been constantly losing games at home they shouldn't for years. Lost Game 5 at home to the Hawks last year with Dejounte Murray suspended. Lost Game 1 against Philly with Embiid out. Game 5 against Milwaukee two seasons ago after being up 6 with 2 minutes to go. I really thought this would be the year they dominate at least up until the Finals, especially at home considering the regular season. But it took just 2 games for them to drop a home game in which they were favored by 14 in. And while they'll likely win the series, it's just another example of them coming up small when things aren't going their way and the other team is hitting shots. Really disappointing.Whatever it takes they just need to get by this team and the stupid mental block they have against them.
Reminds me of last year's Game 5 loss to Atlanta, possibly the worst team in the playoffs, at home with a chance to close it out. It's just inexplicable to me that they lay these eggs at home to mediocre teams. Red flag then, red flag now.In fairness, that is what makes them the worst team in the playoffs. I believe they're a middle of the pack team with those two healthy.
Very cool. There is a difference in the challenges of the regular season and the challenges of a series in the post season.Cool.. that’s probably how they won all those games in the regular season too
THIS!!!!These kinds of plays I was just not understanding:

Why do we need DWhite helping off of Martin, leaving Jaylen completely fucked with no way to guard two guys, especially given Jrue has nowhere to rotate to? If DWhite is going to help like that, why isn't Jrue going under so he can rotate to Martin as White shuts off Herro? At least that makes some sense. Or, if White is going to help onto Herro, he's got to trap hard and at least make it a difficult pass! He's just in no-mans-land and Martin just gets a shootaround 3. I just don't understand the scheme there at all.
Right, like this is completely noncompetitive defense and whether it’s bad scheme or poor attention to detail or the players doing the wrong thing, it shouldn’t be happening in the 84th game in a must-have possession. These kinds of plays I was just not understanding:

A team with White and Jrue at guard and Jay’s on the wing shouldn’t struggle to contain the 3 point line like they did tonight. So disheartening.Right, like this is completely noncompetitive defense and whether it’s bad scheme or poor attention to detail or the players doing the wrong thing, it shouldn’t be happening in the 84th game in a must-have possession.
Miami isn’t reinventing the wheel here.
Jimmy you’re not playing. Go make some coffee
If they think it’s more important to send ineffective help D at Bam shooting midrange 2s than to defend the three point line, then I retract my earlier statements about not being concerned about this series.Bam was killing anyone the Cs put on him. He absolutely destroyed KP all night and essentially took him out of the game. Al is great but tonight he wasn't able to keep Bam from his spot. That left the Cs with bad choices of leaving shooters open to help against BA or continuing to let him absolutely eat all he wanted.
I get the idea of leaving Miami's shooters given the situation/personnel - it was a bet for reversion that failed miserably. Math sucks when you are on the wrong side of it.
KOC picked Philly, Orlando, Phoenix, Dallas, and Indiana in the first round. He can make all the predictions against the C’s he wants.KOC, gamethreading.

EDIT: It’s not a huge deal but it’s disappointing they lost to this Miami team at home. Its weak to act like people expressing that are somehow lesser fans or major whiners that don’t understand the game
Exactly. So Bam scores 30 on 20 shots. We can’t live with that?If they think it’s more important to send ineffective help D at Bam shooting midrange 2s than to defend the three point line, then I retract my earlier statements about not being concerned about this series.
We saw the same thing last year. You run guys role players off the line and make them make plays. You don’t assume they will start missing eventually. It’s a passive mindset. I guarantee if you force them to make extra passes and/or dribble off the line you will generate enough turnovers, misses, or bad plays, that you won’t care if Bam is getting his looks from 12 feet.
Just not sure what they are worried about that they’re OK giving so many open gym looks to an NBA team.
